Is it normal to not flush the loo at night?

So DH won't flush the loo over night if it's just a wee, he says it's because he grew up in the south east and they regularly had droughts so don't flush, I think it's absolutely disgusting. Lately I've only been using the downstairs loo (as I'm too busy with DD to bother checking he's flushed the loo) so will often only go in to the upstairs bathroom in the early evening at bath time and find it unflushed and it stinks. Do other men/people do this?

I always always used to flush my toilet no matter what then none sleeper DS came along at night we dare not flush the upstairs toilets as it wakes him. As soon as he's up first thing DH sorts the en-suite toilet and I do the main bathrooms. However when we have overnight guests we just let them flush and have a sleepless night with DS Grin.

We don't flush at night. Would if a rare night time poo made an appearance obvs. Wee doesn't smell when it's in the toilet, it's in water ...
I think some pps need to drink more water if their wee is stinky. Wee is sterile. It can wait til the morning.

Sarahlou63 · 17/04/2020 22:42

Another that doesn't flush at night - don't want to wake (7) dogs! I flush the first wee of the day which is stronger smelling but then every 3rd wee - although I usually pee outside (I live on a farm) wherever possible. It's a huge waste of water.

BillyAndTheSillies · 17/04/2020 22:43

Don't flush wee overnight, or turn the lights on because it's connected to an annoyingly loud extractor fan.

If we need a pooh, we go downstairs so we don't wake up DC. If it's after 5am we hold everything for risk of waking DS1 who seems to listen out for every creak as soon as the tiniest amount of light appears in the sky.

NoMoreDickheads · 17/04/2020 22:43

Yes it's not uncommon, even in other regions than the south. In my teens I was told off by a boyfriend's family for flushing the loo in the night. The reason being that it can wake others in the house. Bestie and I have it that we flush if it's a #2, or it'd be a bit gross lol.

arethereanyleftatall · 17/04/2020 22:43

We never flush for a wee, day or night. It's a complete waste of water and environmentally wrong. Dh is from Cape Town, and they have had droughts these past few years and we've learnt a lot about the wastage of water since.

SciFiWoman · 17/04/2020 22:44

We never flushed for a wee in the night, when I was growing up - it was an old house and the plumbing was pre-historic😱 I have been married twice and neither husbands nor I flushed during the night to avoid waking either each other or little ones. I’m widowed now, but still don’t flush.. probably in case it wakes the bloody Ddog😁
Obviously if someone had surprise poo or was poorly (d&v) we cleaned up and flushed.

Boireannachlaidir · 17/04/2020 22:45

Never flush at night or during the day if pee only. Flush for poo every time. Far more environmentally friendly that way. Toilet is pristine.

inwood · 17/04/2020 22:45

For those with stinky wee you need to drink more water!

Barryisland · 17/04/2020 22:47

Theres alot of disgusting people on here.
Its 2020. We have flushing toilets. FLUSH THE TOILET EVERY TIME YOU USE IT YOU DIRTY BUGGERS!!🥰

Doingitaloneandproud · 17/04/2020 22:48

Never flush at night, I usually wake up once or twice to wee, but I drink so much during the day and it doesn't smell. It would wake up too many people if I did flush and I don't want to disturb their sleepConfused

JackJackIncredible · 17/04/2020 22:48

Leaving pee for hours and hours surely smells or have you just got used to your pee smells?

weliveincrazytimes · 17/04/2020 22:49

Shock I can't believe how many people do not flush. I live in the SE and we flush every single time.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 17/04/2020 22:50

No, don't flush at night. Urine with the lid closed really isnt that offensive. We are all light sleepers and it's not worth disturbing anyone, least of all the toddler who's bed lies along the wall shared with the bathroom.

Plus it's a complete waste of water.

idontsmokeivape · 17/04/2020 22:51

I can't read the whole thread because the first page has me gagging. Gross. Flush your toilets!

WanderleyWagon · 17/04/2020 22:51

I keep a bucket of water in the bathroom partly for this - much quieter to put half a bucket of water down it at night than to flush.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 17/04/2020 22:51

Barryisland

It's 2020 DON'T WASTE WATER YOU PRAT

itswonkylampshade · 17/04/2020 22:51

Also flush every time! This is rather an illuminating thread 😂

Costacoffeeplease · 17/04/2020 22:53

All you ‘flushers’ don’t come complaining when water shortages happen, it’s coming and maybe sooner than you think

vixxo · 17/04/2020 22:54

No, it's disgusting.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 17/04/2020 22:55

Ps I will excuse any flusher who has rigged their washing machine outlet to the cistern to flush with grey water. I want to rig mine like this! Such a good water saver.

raspberryk · 17/04/2020 22:55

I've never heard of not flushing in the night, I have lived in houses with loud plumbing and the kids get used to it.
I have had people in my house whispering and asking if they could flush in the evenings and thought it was really weird. Do people actually tip toe around their kids and not flush the bloody loo? More than weird.

mamansnet · 17/04/2020 22:56

I'm with you, OP. If I go to the loo early morning and it's full of someone else's urine, I literally want to retch.

Unfortunately DH's family are non-night flushers and I have to ask FIL every fucking time they visit to flush overnight. The toilet is next to my bedroom but it won't wake me but it's a tiny loo with no windows, so no fresh air next morning.

Don't even get me started on the family's lack of handwashing after using the loo before passing you a baguette at the table EnvyEnvyEnvy(not envy)

AvonBarksdale99 · 17/04/2020 22:57

Wee is literally a sterile liquid. People have drunk it and lived! Not recommending that 😂 but leaving it sat in the water of a toilet is not in any way ‘disgusting’

WomanIsTaken · 17/04/2020 22:57

"I think it's absolutely disgusting" Grin
In our house, it would have to be something really severe for anyone to flush at night, like vomit or diarrhoea.
Because saving water, natch. It's 2020 after all, as a PP said.
