Is it normal to not flush the loo at night?

So DH won't flush the loo over night if it's just a wee, he says it's because he grew up in the south east and they regularly had droughts so don't flush, I think it's absolutely disgusting. Lately I've only been using the downstairs loo (as I'm too busy with DD to bother checking he's flushed the loo) so will often only go in to the upstairs bathroom in the early evening at bath time and find it unflushed and it stinks. Do other men/people do this?

I was brought up on well water that occasionally ran out in hot summers so was taught not to waste water. Still on well water now. We’re about 50/50. Used to not flush when my stepson was with us as the pump is over his bedroom, but seem to be flushing now!

carryoncoping · 17/04/2020 22:34

No, don't flush at night, because it would wake everyone up. I'm also very conscious of not wasting water for environmental reasons. Using purified drinking water to flush away sewage is not sensible. I think developers should have to install grey water systems in order to get planning approved.

cushioncovers · 17/04/2020 22:34

Nope don't flush at night. No need. Wastes water.

BunnytheHoneyBee · 17/04/2020 22:34

Wait. Do you all wake up to pee at night?

😂 this made me laugh

DH and I don’t but some might and maybe more so as we get older?

EngagedAgain · 17/04/2020 22:34

@Msfoxy17
Ha, I left the lid down once then forgot 😚

QuestionMarkNow · 17/04/2020 22:34

We don’t during the night either.
This is coming from

  • hav8ng lived in a flat and the nose would disturb neigbourgs
  • havung two dcs who were light sleepers and the noise would have woken them up,

If I had to flush the loo (eg periods etc..) I wouod actually go downstairs to minimise the noise. I couldn’t be bothered to do that for a wee.

No I don't flush overnight both to save water and also so as not to wake the neighbours.
I drink loads of water so it doesn't stink!!
Gets flushed first thing in the morning.

multivac · 17/04/2020 22:35

Can you imagine, OP, posting this in a country where water didn't appear whenever you waved your privileged arm?

Not flushing overnight is a habit for us, since we stayed with our relatives for whom all their water came from a well.

People are frighteningly profligate with water.

Ravenesque · 17/04/2020 22:36

No wee flushing overnight and I don't flush every wee during the day either. It's an environmental thing on my part. If someone's visiting I will flush because I don't want them having to confront my wee in the bowl although with a couple of friends we'll ask if anyone else needs to go after me/them and then flush after the two/three wees.

furling · 17/04/2020 22:36

Our plumbing is so inefficient that if there is the tiniest amount of toilet paper in there already, not everything gets flushed down in one flush. So DH gets to feel virtuous for not flushing after he's been, but I have to flush on the sly BEFORE I even go, because if I don't, I have to flush twice afterwards.

Sonichu · 17/04/2020 22:37

How loud are people's toilets if the NEIGHOURS are woken up by it?? Just shut the lid/close the bathroom door!

BunnytheHoneyBee · 17/04/2020 22:37

although with a couple of friends we'll ask if anyone else needs to go after me/them and then flush after the two/three wees.

What? Shock

Imboredinthehouse · 17/04/2020 22:37

Working for a water company, this is actually something we talk to kids about as part of our education sessions in schools. Much more efficient use of water not to flush overnight

Good to hear this is being taught. We never flush overnight. Flush first thing, I get up around 3 times a night so glad to not waste water.
Having moved to a house with a water meeter I don’t flush in the day if it’s just me. I drink plenty, it does not smell & doesn’t stain the toilet.

Magicbabywaves · 17/04/2020 22:37

Don’t flush at night and leave it a bit during the day too. Saves water.

BikeRunSki · 17/04/2020 22:37

After lodging in the house of a family with a 4 year old, I got into the habit of not flushing after about 8pm. Then I met DH whose dad has worked in waste water treatment for 30 years and I got in the habit of not flushing only wees.

feeona123 · 17/04/2020 22:38

I try to flush as little as possible to try and keep the water bill down! Started when I was pregnant and weeing a million times a day!!

Husband flushes every time in the day but not during the night!!

professorbean · 17/04/2020 22:38

I have passed urine in some really rank toilets, I can't really get worked up about a toilet with a bit of my husband's wee in it.

Knowhowufeel2 · 17/04/2020 22:40

Always flush every time here. Think it's gross not to, and will end up straining the toilet.

TheGoogleMum · 17/04/2020 22:40

I'm generally pro flushing but DH says flushing the ensuite toilet wakes him st night so I have started not flushing for just a night wee

AvonBarksdale99 · 17/04/2020 22:40

If your wee is dark yellow or ‘stinks’ then you’re not drinking enough water. If you’re properly hydrated and drinking water throughout the day then it will be fine to not flush straight away. I’ve never known it to stain the bowl either!

I’m confused as to how in some people’s mind it’s fine to wee in the shower, that people have to actually stand in, but you can’t leave a bit of wee in the toilet until the next person flushes it!

Glowcat · 17/04/2020 22:41

It’s something my father used to go on about when I was a child. Now all the water companies and environmentalists agree with him he feels validated Grin

inwood · 17/04/2020 22:41

Only flush for a poo at night and quite a lot of times during the day. It's a waste of water.

skeggy · 17/04/2020 22:41

I do.

Jux · 17/04/2020 22:42

It depends upon where the loo is and how much noise it makes. I've done both. Currently, we flush because the noise is minimal and the bedrooms are far enough away that it can barely be heard.

I've lived in flatshares where it's been agreed not to flush, but then first one up has to flush before they do anything else. How can your dh use it in the morning and not flush? How come it gets left all day?
