Is it normal to not flush the loo at night?

So DH won't flush the loo over night if it's just a wee, he says it's because he grew up in the south east and they regularly had droughts so don't flush, I think it's absolutely disgusting. Lately I've only been using the downstairs loo (as I'm too busy with DD to bother checking he's flushed the loo) so will often only go in to the upstairs bathroom in the early evening at bath time and find it unflushed and it stinks. Do other men/people do this?

Flush has never woken my kids luckily.

TerrorWig · 20/04/2020 10:52

We don’t, but it’s backfired somewhat as now the children (all boys) seem to NEVER flush Hmm. One in particular has a very strong smelling brew.

I call them upstairs to the toilet every time and make them stand around and flush it together. And put the seat down.

MrsKoala · 21/04/2020 09:14

To all those people saying it doesn’t smell and doesn’t stain; that’s as may be in your house with your well hydrated golden piss, but in this house the wee tends to be strong and brown. I can post a pic of the inside of the toilet too to prove it - not that I really want to! It’s easy to say those people should be drinking/going more etc but they don’t and won’t.

So if that is the case is it still horribly wasteful to flush every time?

PrimalLass · 21/04/2020 09:18

OH does this. It revolts me but I can't get him to change after 25 years.

Costacoffeeplease · 21/04/2020 11:21

I’d be taking anyone whose pee stains the toilet, to the doctor

MrsKoala · 21/04/2020 11:28

Yeah I bet the gps will love that. Even if I could force a grown up to go to the dr I imagine the conversation would be

what do you drink in a day?
10 cups of strong coffee and a couple of cans of lager.
Ummmmmm drink more water and less coffee.
Errr no. I don’t want to.

BrooHaHa · 21/04/2020 11:48

Nah, I don't buy that Mrs Koala. No need to post a pic, but 10 cups of coffee will not cause brown urine. Not unless you've got kidney problems. Coffee is still hydrating, just less so than pure water. 10 cups of coffee, at about 250ml per cup, is 2.5 L which is about what you should be having. I've gone entire days on about 500ml of fluid several times and never have I seen brown urine. You might want to think about a trip to the doctor's, in all seriousness. I'd be concerned about my kidney function if I were you. Unless you mean tiny espresso shot cups?

BadLad · 21/04/2020 11:53

Maybe they're literally cutting out the middle man and chucking it straight in the loo rather than drinking it

BrooHaHa · 21/04/2020 11:57

@BadLad That would certainly explain the staining!

MrsKoala · 21/04/2020 12:00

It’s not my urine!! It’s my h’s, but also my children’s wee is very dark (one only goes once every 24-48 hrs but does have issues with bladder) they don’t drink much or go often.

And it’s not just my house. My dad also doesn’t flush and his pee stains the loo and my mum has to bleach and scrub it. Same with friends whose husbands don’t flush.

It’s possible we aren’t all lying you know. And while I believe there are people whose wee does not stain the loo, I also know there are people whose wee does.

MrsKoala · 21/04/2020 12:01

Ha, it wouldn’t smell so much then I suppose Badlad.

BrooHaHa · 21/04/2020 12:07

I believe you when you say yellow urine can stain but seriously think whoever has the brown urine really does need to see a doctor. That's not normal, even if dehydrated.

MrsKoala · 21/04/2020 12:10

What are you calling brown? I would say the colour of a pint of pale bitter. Or weak tea. Not mahogany, but not pine. Grin

BrooHaHa · 21/04/2020 12:10

It's fairly obvious that it stains when you think about it- limescale can absorb colours and if you're leaving dark yellow liquid to sit in it for hours it's going to colour the limescale.

You should be able to get rid of the staining by flushing (!), giving a good scrub, then scooping out the water, replacing the water with white vinegar and leaving it overnight, then giving another good scrub (you may need an old toothbrush to get into the nooks and crannies).

BrooHaHa · 21/04/2020 12:14

You said strong and brown. Which, to me, implies a very dark brown. I'm not willing to go fetch the Dulux colour chart for this, but suffice it to say, if there's brown urine, go to the doctors.

Baconisgoodformeee · 21/04/2020 12:15

Why have you got limescale in your toilet?!

Also, drink some water people

BrooHaHa · 21/04/2020 12:30

Why have you got limescale in your toilet?!

I didn't say I did. Bit think about it. Urine is not going to stain coated porcelain or ceramic- it's not porous so not stainable. Those reporting staining are referring to the limescale. I had to remove stained limescale when I moved into a house once- you really do need to go for it to shift it once it's there, but it's possible.

BrooHaHa · 21/04/2020 12:30

*but, not bit

Costacoffeeplease · 21/04/2020 12:30

So he won’t drink water and he won’t flush, jeez, is he 12?

Brown urine could be blood, hence the gp trip

Costacoffeeplease · 21/04/2020 12:34

Perhaps a pp had nailed it. If you have limescale in the loo it will get stained. Clean the toilet properly and remove the limescale and perhaps the staining will stop too?

Spamellahamella · 21/04/2020 12:38

We don't flush wees at night. Never havem my parents are the same.

MrsKoala · 21/04/2020 13:12

Yes, we do have limescale here, I’ve always lived in very hard water areas so I’ve always noticed staining in loos. I do treat it every couple of months but it builds up quickly and then gets stained brown from all the wee left in it so I have to keep bleaching it.
