Is it normal to not flush the loo at night?

So DH won't flush the loo over night if it's just a wee, he says it's because he grew up in the south east and they regularly had droughts so don't flush, I think it's absolutely disgusting. Lately I've only been using the downstairs loo (as I'm too busy with DD to bother checking he's flushed the loo) so will often only go in to the upstairs bathroom in the early evening at bath time and find it unflushed and it stinks. Do other men/people do this?

If it smells very badly he could be dehydrated or have an infection.

koshkatt · 17/04/2020 22:07

Brillo yours and my childhoods sound similar. Sad

Redredwine99 · 17/04/2020 22:09

I don’t even turn the light on so I can get back to sleep ASAP

I'm shocked at how many people don't flush over night! I'm not usually a night wee-er but definitely do flush every time I use the loo I think my mum would have told me off if I'd left it growing up I wouldn't mind if he did flush in the morning but he never does anymore (used to) so I've just found last nights wee in the loo just as I posted this as I'd not been in to that bathroom all day Hmm

I always flush. My sons went through a period in their teen years of not flushing and so did their friends! I hated finding a bowl of unflushed wee after a sleepover.

Dimosaur · 17/04/2020 22:13

We do, but our bathroom is downstairs.
Probably Wouldn't if bathroom was upstairs!

PlanDeRaccordement · 17/04/2020 22:14

We flush every use. I can’t imagine not flushing.
Babies get used to normal sounds if you just carry on with life while they nap as infants. You bring it on yourself if you’ve had a silent house because new born is sleeping and now they’re 1yo and the slightest noise wakes them up.

pinkprosseco · 17/04/2020 22:14

Always do. I can't stand finding it in the morning

LouLou789 · 17/04/2020 22:14

We don’t flush in the night unless there is a poo, or we know the other one is awake anyway. Not from ecology, but from not wanting to disturb the other person. When you get older there are more nocturnal visits, plus that “I could sleep through an earthquake” feeling as the parent of a young child has receded

BunnytheHoneyBee · 17/04/2020 22:14

What? People don’t flush their wee?! So every time you go to the loo there’s wee in there 🤢

DH has got in the habit of not flushing at night if I’m in bed and thats bad enough but I don’t say anything as I know he’s being considerate!

3xmother · 17/04/2020 22:14

We never flush in the night. The noise is awful. But I make sure I do it first thing in the morning

GatoFofo · 17/04/2020 22:15

Gross. Always flush.

SophieInTheSky · 17/04/2020 22:16

We don’t flush at night as we don’t want to wake up each other and the children, but it’s flushed first thing in the morning. We don’t then the light on when we go to the loo during the night so we can’t see what’s in there!

helpfulperson · 17/04/2020 22:16

If its yellow let it mellow. Water is going to be the next cause of wars

BakedCam · 17/04/2020 22:16

Just flush the bloody loo.

OP, I'm with you. Its habitual in our house. We simply flush.

AntiHop · 17/04/2020 22:16

We don't flush wees, even during the day. Saves water. Unless we have visitors.

SophieInTheSky · 17/04/2020 22:16
  • turn the light
Sonichu · 17/04/2020 22:16

This is one of those things I have only ever heard of on MN. It's disgusting!!

snowone · 17/04/2020 22:17

A house of non flushers here! Kids bedrooms on both sides of the bathroom!!

missmouse101 · 17/04/2020 22:17

It is normal, yes, not to flush at night.

Likefootball · 17/04/2020 22:18

I flush everytime and add a squirt of bleach overnight.
Perhaps those who don't flush are on a meter.
Still best to flush though.

littleduckeggblue · 17/04/2020 22:18

We always flush. Thought that was normal!

professorbean · 17/04/2020 22:18

We don't flush in the night in case it wakes the kids.

It's only wee! WEE. Are people that disgusted by their loved ones wee? Weird.

vanillandhoney · 17/04/2020 22:18

Every time. It's habit. You pee, wipe, lid down and flush. I can't imagine not doing it.

Plus it smells. Wee that has been left to fester for several hours is horrible - especially if it's not your own!

MitziK · 17/04/2020 22:20

I didn't switch on the lights or flush when I was a kid because a) the noise absolutely terrified me and b) I'd get into trouble for getting up and waking the dog up (he was shut in the kitchen, but apparently, the sound of the light would do it). The fan wasn't a problem because she disconnected both the kitchen and bathroom ones immediately after the council installed them to avoid wasting electricity on them. I wasn't allowing anything to drink after 5pm to make sure I didn't get up anyhow, so it wasn't often that it happened.

It didn't matter how quiet I was when I had my girls because the sound of my eyelids opening in the next room, even with two doors closed, woke the eldest up and she would instantly snap wide awake for the next 22 hours, so I decided I might as well flush it if I absolutely had to go, as she was already going to be awake.

Now, I don't turn the lights on, as I've developed the skill of knowing exactly where I am in the house by sound and touch, so don't bother with glasses either, but I always flush.
