To be so angry at the Chinese government

Because they didn’t shut the wet markets down permanently after SARS so another pandemic was inevitable. The rest of the world is now putting pressure on China to end it’s wildlife trade but this won’t be easy. Most of the world is in lockdown because of this trade and it’s so depressing to think history will repeat itself if China doesn’t get its act together.

The more I learn about how the Chinese abuse wild animals the angrier I get - the latest thing I read about is how they make the lives of bears a misery by extracting their bile.

Surely this is a PR disaster for China?

You can be angry at the Chinese government as long as the Irish people can be angry at the British government for killing almost the entire population then splitting up the country causing horrendous and deadly conflict that has only been stopped by an agreement which the British people have threatened via the total nonsense that is Brexit.

Not closing markets vs actively withholding food and permanently destabilising a region for very little gain. Hard contest.

I’m angry that China had a chance to stop the virus in its tracks when that doctor first sounded the alarm but instead the government reprimanded him for “spreading rumours”. China is basically a dystopia at this point.

Should we be angry at gardeners for using compost made out of peat which has adverse effects on the climate, and destroys valuable ecosystems? Many rare and endangered species live in and around peat bogs and these are having their way of life threatened.

@TheDailyCarbuncle that makes no sense. Historically and probably even currently to an extent the British interactions with Ireland have been shameful. A lot of British history is shameful. What if I suggested that you shouldn't be angry about any of that because Britain was heavily involved in the slave trade which is arguably worse? It makes no sense, bad things are not a competition one bad thing doesn't cancel out other bad things.

OP yes I hope this is a wake up call for China, I hope they start to realise how negatively most of the world views their treatment of animals. I hope there are changes.

I very much agree with you on this.

China wants to have its cake and eat it too. If it is going to be a superpower and allow literally millions of its citizens to go abroad then it has a responsibility to the rest of the world to update its animal welfare standards so diseases like this are less likely to originate.

My point @Emmagen is that people in the UK seem to like to engage in a little light racism by implying other countries are so backward and wrong when their own country has an absolutely appalling track record all over the world, not just of things like failing to shut markets, but of actively destroying other countries.

If you can’t stand to read a swear word you’d be better not posting in AIBU. You might be best to get the thread taken down or moved because even posts agreeing with you will have expletives (unless of course it’s only sweary posts that disagree with you that you object to).

This could just as easily happened in a pig farm. Like it did in 2009. I’d be more concerned about their continued practice of murdering their own citizens. Just saying.

Pandemics are inevitable anyway. At any one time we have a dozen epidemics happening around the world and any one of them could break containment efforts and start a pandemic. New viruses are more likely to become a pandemic than a known disease because we lose time identifying it.

Besides the U.K. trades in wildlife and eats game meat too. It was more bad luck and dodgy hygiene that caused this outbreak.

Playing the blame game doesn’t help anyone. It would discourage people from raising the alarm in future. The Spanish flu is an example of that. The Spanish flu did not originate in Spain but in Kansas, USA. But the US kept quiet and kept shipping sick soldiers to the front in WWI. The Spanish were the first to raise the alarm...and now History thinks it was a flu that started in Spain.

Getting angry towards the country that raises the alarm is counter productive. We should be thanking China.

There was an article somewhere about how the economics of this plays completely into the hands of the Chinese. Where pooorer countries get loans from China to build infrastructure that they will be unable to service with a global recession, China takes control of the asset meaning they are exerting their global control far and wide. Not good.

No country is innocent, all the major players have horrible histories full of atrocities.

I hope this is a massive wake up call for China in all aspects, wet markets, human rights abuses etc.

They had the opportunity to stop this shitshow in its tracks but lies about it and bollocked the Dr who blew the whistle.

Whataboutery in all its glory here. Yes, I am angry too at the wet markets. If it wasn't for them I would not be stuck at home, unable to see my family with the news looking like some horrible episode of Black Mirror. It does not make me a racist. But yeah, a pandemic was coming anyway. Swine flu was pig farming.
