To be so angry at the Chinese government

Because they didn’t shut the wet markets down permanently after SARS so another pandemic was inevitable. The rest of the world is now putting pressure on China to end it’s wildlife trade but this won’t be easy. Most of the world is in lockdown because of this trade and it’s so depressing to think history will repeat itself if China doesn’t get its act together.

The more I learn about how the Chinese abuse wild animals the angrier I get - the latest thing I read about is how they make the lives of bears a misery by extracting their bile.

Surely this is a PR disaster for China?

Why are you so hostile? As I said we have a lot of time left on earth to come up with a solution and my theory makes more sense to stop a lot of diseases at the source. Why would science just decide to stop advancing.

LassoOftruth, I've seen recent You Tube video of people eating bat's & raw baby mice in China so I'm not sure that's 'uninformed' & 'racist' as you describe others who've also mentioned that here. Also, news today states transmission could be from stray dogs who've eaten bat's & are then slaughtered to be eaten. I've also seen video of dogs being skinned, barbecued & boiled alive, often still wearing a collar so obv stolen not stray . I'm not really believing the China is 'drafting' policy to forbid eating 'companion animals' . What about forbidding bat's, as they carry rabies & Lyssa virus to humans, as well as many strains of CV.

Geepipe
Ok then, we'll talk in about 100 years

We don't even have a good enough vaccine yet for malaria, and nothing for HIV or dengue.
The chances of developing vaccines for zoonotic viruses for wild bats are about zero.

Klonda · 16/04/2020 17:55

Surely there is people whos job it is to study viruses in bats?
Yup, including a lab-full in Wuhan...

LadyEloise · 17/04/2020 09:26

Sky News app is reporting that the Chinese have upped the numbers who died in Wuhan by 50%

Sky News app also reports that the UK is investigating whether the outbreak is linked to a lab in Wuhan.

Could somebody please do links or photos of the headlines on the app for me and post on here - I don't know how. Blush

LadyEloise I imagine the real numbers are far higher than anything the Chinese government have said.
I looked at Worldometer and whoever’s in charge of it is incredibly naive.

Mittens030869 · 17/04/2020 12:02

Undoubtedly the figures were much higher. Anecdotal evidence from Chinese people has made that clear. No one ever really believed that there were only 3,500 deaths.

They just collect data, as reported. They are not meant to pass judgement.

Lweji · 17/04/2020 13:57

Still, there will be adjustments made by all countries.
The size will depend on how badly hit they will have been.
Some adjustments during and other after the peaks.

From The Times. A 50 percent upward revision in the official tally of Covid deaths.

Wuhan today revised its coronavirus death toll up by 1,290 people, boosting the official count by almost 50 per cent, as China faced growing claims that it has been hiding the true extent of the pandemic. The city’s epidemic control headquarters said today that the new toll included people who had died in the early days of the pandemic and covered “late reporting, mis-reporting and omissions”. The total tally for the city now stands at 3,869 deaths from 50,333 infections. The change also pushes the nationwide death toll up by nearly 39 per cent to 4,632, based on official national data released earlier today

LadyEloise · 19/04/2020 09:37

On Worldometer this morning ;
Deaths per Million :
UK 228
US 118
China 3

If I was leading a government through this pandemic whether a politician or top health professional I would ask the Chinese what they were doing to have such an amazing outcome.

ShanghaiDiva · 19/04/2020 09:46

I am not suggesting that Chinese numbers are accurate, but some of the measures they have implemented and uk has not are:
14 day quarantine for arrivals (now only Chinese, as border closed)
All arrivals back in country tested for virus on day one and day 14 of quarantine
Extensive contact tracing
Mandatory testing at hospital if you developed symptoms
Self isolation if travelling between provinces
Non residents not allowed to enter compounds
Temp checks everywhere
Compulsory mask wearing in supermarket etc

Maybe it could be a wake up call for this country - we have decimated our manufacturing industry. Just in time supply chain doesn't work when you don't keep supplies of emergency equipment like PPE and has left us competing with the rest of the world for limited supplies. There should be stocks kept and plans in place to produce our own in emergency situations. This is common sense. Businesses have risk registers and mitigation plans - does the NHS & PHE with how many managers being paid more than the PM & Health Secretary?

LadyEloise · 19/04/2020 11:50

I agree Katie
