I'm not sure yet but I'll probably pay for a month and then see what other features they bring in.

Thread by Justine incase you haven't seen it

YABU = No

YANBU = Yes, I might give it a try

On furlough, DH's job not looking good longer term so won't pay for anything extra I don't need to right now. Surprised that advertising revenue would drop that much so quickly?

DroppedBoxxedRuth · 08/04/2020 14:05

Yes, but I'd prefer to be able to donate what I'm comfortable with rather than being told.

I think they'd get a lot more support if those that can afford only a fiver can give that over all the faff.

Pipandmum · 08/04/2020 14:05

No I sometimes think mumsnet is a black hole that sucks time and I regret ever going on it! So if they start charging, for me that's a good reason to stop using it.

WorraLiberty · 08/04/2020 14:05

Yes it is a bit surprising but then again, so many are not essential services. I wonder if half the businesses are still operating at the moment?

MouthBreathingRage · 08/04/2020 14:07

I'm dubious about it. I'm not quite understanding how they are losing money, surely they should be getting more hits than ever to the site with people being at home? How many features are we going to lose if we don't pay - username search has already suspiciously gone missing. I appreciate business need to make their money somehow during this time, but I don't like the feeling I have to pay to have the usual full features of the site.

The 'new' features aren't currently worth the cost for me personally, adverts can be hidden other ways and I don't particularly agree with an 'edit post' ability, people who get a pasting can edit themselves to seem less unreasonable.

Walkthedinosauuuuur · 08/04/2020 14:07

That's ridiculously expensive - it's the same price as Disney plus!

Hotcuppatea · 08/04/2020 14:08

Not a chance. I'm only here for the chat and I can get that elsewhere. Also, like Pipandmum it might be the push I need to kick the habit.

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 08/04/2020 14:09

Nope i understand it,but hiding basic functions like edit behind a paywall seems a bit unethical as people have wanted it for years and is easy to implement. Either its a bad or good idea, it doesnt change when you pay £5

Grobagsforever · 08/04/2020 14:10

I have. I need Mumsnet. Can cancel once Covid is over

PleaseStopCrying · 08/04/2020 14:10

Not a chance and its pretty shit that they can suddenly muster up an edit button when the prospect of charging is considered yet in all the years I've been here its been a big fat no depite it being asked for repeatedly and being a basic on every other forum.

2beesornot2beesthatisthehoney · 08/04/2020 14:11

Thank you for highlighting this I had missed it. Mumsnet has helped me so much in the past and I am very happy to support them .

DonnaDarko · 08/04/2020 14:11

Can't really justify the cost right now, so probably not!

Queenlish · 08/04/2020 14:11

No. I know too many people that have lost their jobs, have no money coming in at all, struggling to get food.
I will donate £'s to foodbanks instead.

The Daily Fail takes so many stories off mumsnet maybe they could help them out.

cardibach · 08/04/2020 14:11

Interesting. The poll suggests 10% would pay, and that’s what Justine estimates in the thread linked above.

Tonyaster · 08/04/2020 14:12

This.

Also half the people on here are batshit. I'd be mad to pay to talk to them Grin

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 08/04/2020 14:12

Not unreasonable but I would not pay

Money tight right now and don’t want to be tied into yet another subscription

Though I guess this is the way lots of free sites like The Guardian and Mumsnet will go

PicsInRed · 08/04/2020 14:12

I'll be more then happy to pay if they deal more robustly with the misogynists, abuse excusers and just general woman baiters who come on here to bother and generally tell women what to think and how to behave.

This is a huge problem and needs more attention.

AreWeAnywhereNear · 08/04/2020 14:13

Nope I wouldn't pay it either.

I agree with a PP make the papers who lift the stories from here pay for them instead.

Stet · 08/04/2020 14:13

Yes, I'm lucky that it's not a noticeable amount of money for us and I would like to support the site as I do use it a lot.

SamSeabornforPresident · 08/04/2020 14:14

Probably not. Too many bullying arseholes. Some threads just make me really uncomfortable, the way people absolutely like on to verbally abuse an OP. Coronavirus has made this way worse. I've been using it a lot less since this has started.

WorraLiberty · 08/04/2020 14:16

I don't particularly agree with an 'edit post' ability, people who get a pasting can edit themselves to seem less unreasonable.

Yes but most edit buttons show you the original message when you click on 'edited'.

OP posts:
heavensabove123 · 08/04/2020 14:16

No will not be buying.

mochojoes · 08/04/2020 14:16

Far too expensive, I understand they can't do it for free but we've been bombarded with ads for years.

It annoys me that they play the little small business working from the office in the garden card but I'm sure they make a profit of 2m a year & unlike a lot of other businesses requires very little investment.

MarieQueenofScots · 08/04/2020 14:17

No.

I think they’ve massively missed the mark with this. Asking for donations would have been one thing - I would happily have donated. But this essentially creating a two-tier service of basic functions that have been requested for years.

Stet · 08/04/2020 14:17

Re: edit function, most other forums I use either have a time-limited edit function (so a few minutes to fix typos etc) or the ability to see the original post.
