I'm not sure yet but I'll probably pay for a month and then see what other features they bring in.

Thread by Justine incase you haven't seen it

YABU = No

YANBU = Yes, I might give it a try

I missed the part that it will still remain free but how will they avoid a two tier system. Also if you do pay £5 why will there still be ads?

WorraLiberty · 08/04/2020 14:31

I was a bit shocked at the wage bill when you consider they still use volunteers to look after the boards at night.

It’ll create a hierarchy of users. I won’t pay.

I’d be sad to leave the site, but I think I would go if not paying meant limited access. It’d be a massive shame after being a user for a long, long time.

Dyrne · 08/04/2020 14:33

I’m assuming “Wage Bill” includes things like Pensions, National Insurance Contributions, other benefits etc. That can nearly double what a person’s salary is vs the “cost” of that person to the employer.

PleaseStopCrying · 08/04/2020 14:34

So glad it wasn't just me. I had to read it twice to ensure I hadn't missed something. It does seem extremely high when like you say half the days moderation is done by unpaid staff. Hmm

mochojoes · 08/04/2020 14:34

Who owns Mumsnet? Where do the profits go?

According to the FT it used to be

The company has no outside investors – it is owned by the founders, staff and a “couple of mates” –

Don't know if it's changed

MarieQueenofScots · 08/04/2020 14:35

I'd need to be happier with the moderation before I subscribed

That’s a very fair point. I had a comment deleted the other day for calling myself a twat Grin

endofthelinefinally · 08/04/2020 14:36

I have had great support on certain boards. I worry that the most vulnerable people will not be able to pay, for example the abused, the bereaved.
Also, if I were going to pay I would want to have a say in some of the moderation decisions that have resulted in the banning of some exceptionally knowledgeable posters and the encouragement of certain ill intentioned ones.
Also, I would be very reluctant to hand over bank details given the whole debacle of the intern who betrayed everybody's trust and essentially got off scott free.
I think MN has done very well out of the content provided by the contributers. They should probably consider other options.

Mummyoflittledragon · 08/04/2020 14:36

Yes I’ve paid. But I actually don’t particularly want the premium service. I want it to continue for others as well as me. I’m thinking of abused women and other people desperately needing help.

If you can afford it, please consider paying for others, who can’t....

NameChangeNugget · 08/04/2020 14:37

I think it’s cheap but, I won’t be subscribing

PleaseStopCrying · 08/04/2020 14:38

I have to say im suprised to see so many unquestionably handing over such details given the past breeches.

heartsonacake · 08/04/2020 14:39

Nope. On the basic side it’s extremely expensive for next to nothing.

On the ethical side, seems they can suddenly create and add features we’ve been asking for for years now money’s being asked for.

Voxx · 08/04/2020 14:39

No. I can’t afford it. I pay about that for my basic Netflix package and that’s better value for money by far. I obviously don’t want MN to fold, but honestly, I don’t think the recent Covid crisis has brought out the best in the site. Only too often now, I click on a thread and then wish I hadn’t. This might be the push I need to stop coming back so often.

Igmum · 08/04/2020 14:39

I've signed up. I come on here a lot (too much 😳) and don't want to see it go under.

mochojoes · 08/04/2020 14:40

350k is quite a hefty monthly wage bill

heartsonacake · 08/04/2020 14:40

I think it’s cheap

NameChangeNugget Cheap? Are you having a laugh? £5 a month for less advertisements and the possible promise of an edit button?

Disney + has given their entire library for that.

drunkyhumptydumpty · 08/04/2020 14:41

Would they be able to guarantee a flawless service? Because I would be really mad if I was paying for an app with so many issues and that is frequently unusable.

Isawthathaggis · 08/04/2020 14:41

Not for me - I’m only here to waste time, I can do that elsewhere. I don’t buy myself magazines either. Although I do pay for a good quality newspaper because I think it’s important to support quality journalism.

I also think they’ve missed the mark with the pricing, because if it was 99p people like me would probably pay. Lots of 99p’s is surely worth more than a could £4.99.

I’m also struggling to see where the costs are in running this?

wanderings · 08/04/2020 14:41

Hell no. Like others, I need a reason not to be in this place, especially with the highly aggressive tone that it has taken recently.

SauvignonBlanche · 08/04/2020 14:41

In different circumstances I would but DH is currently on JSA and we’re skint.

I’m disappointed that I’m about to become a second-class user Sad

lalafafa · 08/04/2020 14:42

350k a month on staff! That’s huge.

MamaBearOnLockdown · 08/04/2020 14:42

There's no real reason why MN should be "free", it's a business as any other after all.

The question is if people will still use it or not. I can imagine the DM having the same problem: everybody is reading it, but I bet that would drop an awful lot if you had to pay to access it.

UnfinishedSymphon · 08/04/2020 14:43

What about the women (and men) who are in abusive relationships and don't have access to money?

drunkyhumptydumpty · 08/04/2020 14:43

But at £5.99 a month it would be a flat out no. The service provided is just not worth it.
It's not unique. BabyCentre is still free and has better functions, edit, like buttons, and is peer moderated.
It doesn't crash!!
So why would I pay so much for something that is free and better elsewhere?

MamaBearOnLockdown · 08/04/2020 14:43

That’s a very fair point. I had a comment deleted the other day for calling myself a twat

fabulous

Please mention that on the thread from Justine!
