I'm not sure yet but I'll probably pay for a month and then see what other features they bring in.

Thread by Justine incase you haven't seen it

YABU = No

YANBU = Yes, I might give it a try

Nope, I won't.
One of its appeals is that it is free so (as long as you have access to the internet) no one is excluded based on their economic position.

ElizabethG81 · 08/04/2020 14:49

The moderation would have to improve for me to consider paying. I've lost count of the times a thread's been deleted when I'm part way through reading it because it's "not in the spirit".

WorraLiberty · 08/04/2020 14:50

I had a comment deleted the other day for calling myself a twat

I can't stop laughing Grin Grin

I was a bit shocked at the wage bill when you consider they still use volunteers to look after the boards at night.

This is a very valid point 350K is a huge amount of money considering the lack of moderation at night and the half hearted moderation on weekends.

I appreciate not all of that 350k is spent on moderators, but I also doubt it's sent on a decent tech team. Given the amount of problems and the ridiculous amount of time it can take to fix them.

BoreOfWhabylon · 08/04/2020 14:51

Yes I’ve paid. But I actually don’t particularly want the premium service. I want it to continue for others as well as me. I’m thinking of abused women and other people desperately needing help.

If you can afford it, please consider paying for others, who can’t....

Sleepingboy · 08/04/2020 14:51

I just posted this on Justine's thread. Wonder if she'll reply.

I don't understand. Surely your hit rate has gone through the roof since everyone is at hone. More people going on Mumsnet for longer as some people have nothing else to do.

That must mean you can charge more for your advertising. Why don't you do that? Advertisers are still advertising.

Kraejka · 08/04/2020 14:52

Absolutely not. I can't afford it and even I could I fail to see what benefits it brings which would be worth that amount of money. It's a lot!
Asking for donations is one thing but trying to get people to subscribe to that is a bit of a cheek I think.

WorraLiberty · 08/04/2020 14:52

What about the women (and men) who are in abusive relationships and don't have access to money?

They can just carry on as they are.

The non premium version will still be free.

OP posts:
BuzzShitbagBobbly · 08/04/2020 14:52

No. Mainly because I don’t trust them with my payment details. I don’t even trust them with my usual email address so I’m certainly not inputting anything on here with my financial info on it.

Very very good point. They have shown more than once how lax their security is, that providing them with full payment information would be nuts.

drunkyhumptydumpty · 08/04/2020 14:52

If you can afford it, please consider paying for others, who can’t....

But again. There are other platforms MN is not the be all and end all.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/04/2020 14:52

I have subscribed. I value MN, and hopefully enough people will subscribe that the site can stay free for the people who can’t subscribe, or don’t want to,

lemontreebird · 08/04/2020 14:52

Tiktok - will she be allowed back if we're paying for the service?

Saucery · 08/04/2020 14:53

Yes, the hit rate has gone through the roof and they cynically want to capitalise on that. Which is disappointing, to put it mildly.
I’ll carry on editing my own posts before pressing Post and using an ad blocker.

MayTheGodsBeEverInYourFavour · 08/04/2020 14:54

No, not for £50 a year. Simply can't afford it. The adverts don't bother me anyway.

mochojoes · 08/04/2020 14:54

@Sleepingboy I'm confused why ad revenue is down, surely we are spending more time then ever on the net, forums, watching tv. Probably my imagination as the kids aren't normally on it so much but youtube seems to have loads more on there.

Kuponut · 08/04/2020 14:55

Nope. Don't have the spare income at the moment and I wouldn't pay considering some of the vile abuse I've seen directed at anyone whose mental health is suffering at the moment.

JJPC · 08/04/2020 14:55

No - I use the site but there’s a lot I don’t agree with, including their somewhat biased moderation which I often disagree with.
The price point is all wrong. £5 per month is a lot if you compare it with other things available, Netflix, Disney plus, etc. I would have priced it at more like £5 per year.

BlackCatSleeping · 08/04/2020 14:55

I'm broke at the moment. I would have considered a small donation after pay day, but I think Mumsnet needs to reconsider how it's run. That's a huge wage bill. Either they are overpaid or they have too many staff. There are so many free forums out there. No one is going to pay a premium long term.

CobyKnobe · 08/04/2020 14:55

I think it's way too high sorry x

If you're loosing money I would think you need to restructure as there's a lot of adverts and brand deals so it must be being lost somewhere

Pollyputthepizzaon · 08/04/2020 14:55

Yes I’ve signed up. Mumsnet saw me through every night feed, every lonely 5am morning with a baby and a million other times.

I’ve had advice on booking holidays, relationships, parenting, schools and so much more.

I can’t even imagine how much harder I’d have found raising my children without it. Well worth £1 a week to support them.

CherryBakebadly · 08/04/2020 14:55

Frankly I think it’s really obvious money grabbing at a time when other more essential businesses aren’t doing that. The asking price is just too high

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/04/2020 14:55

Quite refreshing to see the voting ...

As I said on the Site Stuff thread, I'm not sure why we'd be expected to pay when it's posters who are the actual product?

e1y1 · 08/04/2020 14:56

Really in 2 minds. I want to support them and would hate to see it go, but

No. Mainly because I don’t trust them with my payment details. I don’t even trust them with my usual email address so I’m certainly not inputting anything on here with my financial info on it

This very much so

And Also half the people on here are batshit. I'd be mad to pay to talk to them

This even more so.

feelingverylazytoday · 08/04/2020 14:56

No, definitely not.

FortunesFave · 08/04/2020 14:56

No. It's just not good enough. I can use Reddit for free...I think as others have said, this is a massive mistake on their part.

But putting some of MN behind a paywall will just make it exclusive. Cut out those on a low income.

Making more women less able to find support and information which those from wealthier backgrounds can easily access anyway.

I posted some time ago about the Childbirth Trust being inaccessible to all but people with the money....got replies from people saying "Oh it's only cheap!"

Not if you don't have ANY spare cash it's not. This will be the same. It will be the end of my interest in MN and it's been 12 years for me.
