I'm not sure yet but I'll probably pay for a month and then see what other features they bring in.

Thread by Justine incase you haven't seen it

YABU = No

YANBU = Yes, I might give it a try

Antigonads · 08/04/2020 14:17

Hell no

Will there be two tiers then. Will we still be able to access all threads but just have to put up with the ads? Will those who have subscribed have a special emoji after their username?

Utter bollocks.

RingtheBells · 08/04/2020 14:18

Probably not, well certainly not while CV is around as it is nothing but endless samey discussions about that and batshit posters, maybe I will see later on when things return to normal.

mochojoes · 08/04/2020 14:18

A big problem for me is I like the fact it's such a widely used platform. If only 10% stay & pay that vastly reduces the reach & potential advice I may seek.

Stet · 08/04/2020 14:18

Re; finances, this is what Justine said on another thread: 'Last year we had revenue of £7m and pre-tax profit of £570k. We have a a couple of loans too which were due to be paid back this autumn...'

KillerofMen · 08/04/2020 14:19

Though I guess this is the way lots of free sites like The Guardian and Mumsnet will go

I am likely to take up a guardian subscription as they've been providing useful updates and insights through all of this.

The issue with a Mumsnet subscription is that we aleady 'pay' in that we provide the content. The website is crap - it's the talk board that provides the good stuff.

PleaseStopCrying · 08/04/2020 14:20

I think they’ve massively missed the mark with this. Asking for donations would have been one thing - I would happily have donated. But this essentially creating a two-tier service of basic functions that have been requested for years.

See this is exactly what will happen. People will think they are more important because they have paid. The fact they can suddenly offer an edit button now we will have to pay for it has made me pretty cross act as its such a simple feature and its always been a no whenever anyone suggested it.

I think donations would have been better recieved and garnered more support than creating an us and them situation.

Dyrne · 08/04/2020 14:20

Yes I probably will - I see it more as a donation though rather than wanting to actually get any “extra” features.

It’s so rare to have a place where a large group of (mainly British) women can come together and just chat about anything and everything. Men are of course welcome but any hint of “behold, a Man(tm) has arrived, listen to my wisdom” is rightly derided.

I lurk around the Prepper forums and I’ve been struck recently about the difference between there and the Reddit ones. It’s so aggressively male and American; every other thread descends into “if you don’t have 2725 guns what are you even DOING here?!?” I’m happy wittering on about power cuts and dehydrating food :)

I’d be sad if mumsnet folded, would be happy to Chuck a few quid their way to keep it going.

What I don’t want to happen is if Premium users were allowed to dictate content on the site. I can imagine a certain Online Group would love to come on and then threaten to cancel subscriptions if certain content was allowed to stay.

lookingformybrain · 08/04/2020 14:21

No, won't be paying.

I don't think the extras are worth it.

PheasantPlucker1 · 08/04/2020 14:21

It wasnt that long ago a mumsnet employee was posting peoples ip adresses on twitter...

Am I fuck giving them my bank details 😂

mochojoes · 08/04/2020 14:21

According to the FT in 2016 pre tax profits were down 16 % to 2.1m & that in 17 years of operation only £25,000 of equity investment has been put into the business

Are they other investors? It's a rare business that can grow without outside help.

Didiusfalco · 08/04/2020 14:22

I would consider paying in other circumstances, but now 20% down on pay we need to cut back.

Zilla1 · 08/04/2020 14:22

Tonyaster, only half?

AppleKatie · 08/04/2020 14:23

4.99 a month is a huge amount of money for an edit button.

No, I won’t be paying and if I’m honest I probably need to spend less time here not more.

JasonPollack · 08/04/2020 14:24

£4.99 a month?! That seems like lot for.a 'service' with no features.

mochojoes · 08/04/2020 14:25

£5 a month is ridiculous when we provide the content. Basic Netflix is 5!

coconuttelegraph · 08/04/2020 14:25

This is the first I've heard of it and there isn't much detail in the link but regardless I'm not earning during the lockdown so can't afford any new expenses.

Zilla1 · 08/04/2020 14:26

It does seem an odd price point for a site with significant user-generated content (which I recognise needs active moderation which costs) compared with the cost base for a newspaper running a pack of reporters or Disney+ with its massive expense of generating film and TV content (though I recognise Disney has wide revenue base with cinema (normally), pay TV, DVDs and such like.

Pimmsypimms · 08/04/2020 14:26

Nope, husband was made redundant and Can't even afford to pay the mortgage and bills so defo wouldn't pay for Mumsnet.
Agree with it being like a black hole too so probably wouldn't do me any harm not have it anymore!

tiggertogger · 08/04/2020 14:26

In 2017 and 2018 the profit before tax was c2.7m so something went really wrong last year if they only made .5m. Loans also look to be in the region of less than 1m while shareholders' funds are 8.4m. Accounts for 2019 are not yet available but I wouldn't expect a vast difference (year end is Dec) so the plea for help doesn't really stack up.

PleaseStopCrying · 08/04/2020 14:27

£4.99 a month?! That seems like lot for.a 'service' with no features.

Especially when you compare it to something like disney plus which cost exactly the same amount if you pre ordered it.

JasonPollack · 08/04/2020 14:27

Who owns Mumsnet? Where do the profits go?

PleaseStopCrying · 08/04/2020 14:28

a site with significant user-generated content (which I recognise needs active moderation which costs)

According to Justine on the other thread the wage bill is 350k a month. Shock

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 08/04/2020 14:28

I think I will do a month or two, but I do think the price point is a bit high. Twenty quid a year would be fine, but fifty quid seems a bit much.

SarahInAccounts · 08/04/2020 14:28

I'd need to be happier with the moderation before I subscribed. Imagine paying then getting banned because a few people don't like your opinions and run crying to MN. If I'm paying I expect to get what I pay for.

So it's a nope from me.

ivenamechangedforthispost · 08/04/2020 14:29

With their profits I really don't think they are going to be desperate for the money at the moment like some.
hardly scrimping by to put food on the table like millions at the moment.

No I won't be subscribing.
