I'm not sure yet but I'll probably pay for a month and then see what other features they bring in.

Thread by Justine incase you haven't seen it

YABU = No

YANBU = Yes, I might give it a try

OP posts:
mochojoes · 08/04/2020 14:56

I'm anyone who uses a "dummy" email account

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 08/04/2020 14:56

£1 a month would be fair enough... Aligning themselves with unlimited access to the entire Disney back catalogue? I think we have a new CF thread, quite frankly...

mochojoes · 08/04/2020 14:56

another one!

RedRec · 08/04/2020 14:56

No. Think this is the kick I need to get off this time consuming (although fun) rabbit warren.

NoraLuka · 08/04/2020 14:57

Like PP have said MN is a black hole - I often pop on for 5 minutes and am still there an hour later! I also feel that the general mood on the boards is kind of mean at the moment, prob due to stress and coronavirus but all the same, I think that a bit less MN will be a good thing.

Optimist1 · 08/04/2020 14:57

Sorry, haven't read the entire thread, but my immediate reaction is why, in a situation where Justine says advertising revenue has suffered a hit would the solution be to reduce the size of the MN market for those advertisers? And by definition, those who are able to afford to opt out of ads are those who are more able to afford the goods and services offered by the advertisers. Doesn't make business sense to me, but then I'm not a successful entrepreneur!

whiskybysidedoor · 08/04/2020 14:58

Id have paid a donation, so people who are vulnerable and in need of help could access it, but like many others I need less of a mumsnet habit than more.

Also not keen on handing over my bank details either.

It a a bit like geocaching (although I concede v different times). It was brilliant but then they tried to make more money out of it and ruined it.

drunkyhumptydumpty · 08/04/2020 14:58

Has revenue been hit because some retailers don't want to be associated with certain beliefs or arguments that have transpired?

heartsonacake · 08/04/2020 14:58

That must mean you can charge more for your advertising. Why don't you do that? Advertisers are still advertising.

Sleepingboy No, it mustn’t mean that. The fact that Mumsnet’s hit rate has gone up is irrelevant.

In this climate, advertisers are massively cutting down on advertising. Companies that are shut will have stopped advertising altogether, and the companies that remain open are unlikely to want to spend money advertising to a parenting forum, as that is typically a group of people with a low income who have basic priorities and no money to spend on the unnecessary.

Parents are not an advertisers dream, they have far less money than most sects of society, and now even more are off or out of work that is no incentive to advertise to them.

(And no, I don’t agree with paying for Mumsnet Premium, but trying to make out they can make money from advertising right now is ridiculous.)

Alsohuman · 08/04/2020 14:59

I'd need to be happier with the moderation before I subscribed

Same here. It’s utterly random. Multiple posts telling other posters to fuck off or being called cunts left standing one day and deleted another.

oldmum22 · 08/04/2020 15:00

Sorry no I wont be subscribing . Money is too tight and I don't think the additional features warrant it . I am concerned that a two tier Mumsnet is going to cause division . Sad, as in the past I have sought advice and had different perspectives put on situations I was involved in .

ErrolTheDragon · 08/04/2020 15:00

I'm pondering.

The price point seems a bit high, but I'd guess that's because they want to retain free access to the standard version and expect only a relatively small proportion will be willing (and able) to foot the bill.

LynetteScavo · 08/04/2020 15:00

I'm not willing to pay that much for no ads and an edit button.

I did like the features which I tested (until today) which showed who had posted by number of posts/OP or individual posters posts. Would that be included? It might be time for me to delete the MN app.

Annebronte · 08/04/2020 15:00

No. It’s just a habit that I could live without. Not worth spending money on, for me.

PleaseStopCrying · 08/04/2020 15:00

those who are able to afford to opt out of ads

Perhaps even worse is that for the grandly infalted price of 50 quid a year you won't even be ad free, you'll just have fewer ads.

MintyMabel · 08/04/2020 15:01

I’d want a better service if I were paying for it. Plus, they can be so random with the ban hammer and have said they wouldn’t refund if you were banned. So, it’s a no for me.

I have. I need Mumsnet. Can cancel once Covid is over

Mumsnet will still exist if you don’t subscribe.

The issue with a Mumsnet subscription is that we aleady 'pay' in that we provide the content

Exactly.

shamalidacdak · 08/04/2020 15:01

I'm more surprised that advertising revenue has dropped. Most larger businesses are ramping up their marketing right now because they can't afford not to.

OhCaptain · 08/04/2020 15:01

What they’re offering isn’t worth the money.

I frankly don’t believe them, I think they’re trying to cash in on all the extra hits.

I have an ad blocker anyway.

They have been hacked, had an employee dox people, and from what I see there’s been no consequences of the latter.

So, no!

IrisAnon · 08/04/2020 15:02

No. It was the most excellent free service that allows you to dip in and out across the years of raising a child. I also don't want to pay as too many people on here are rude and aggressive. The great thing was is that it was a leveller - people from all incomes and backgrounds coming together to help and support each other.
Also the profits were pretty healthy already. It's all about money, isn't it?
If they go to subscription, you can bet a new free site will pick up the slack.

EvilPea · 08/04/2020 15:02

I get it. I really do

But bloody hell, everything is £4.99 a month. I hate subscription stuff. I just don’t have that much money spare every month.

Umnoway · 08/04/2020 15:04

No, they’d probably have fared better requesting donations.

Mummyoflittledragon · 08/04/2020 15:04

The non premium service will be free.

Only if the site doesn’t go under. You are a prolific poster, like me Worra and I have a lot of respect for you as a poster. I’ve made clear I don’t particularly want the premium service.

Perhaps we could discuss this point rather than presuming it will continue if not enough people agree to pay subs.

Innitogether · 08/04/2020 15:04

Rest assured we remain committed to always providing a free version of the site, as we fundamentally believe that access to the advice and support Mumsnet offers should not depend on your ability to pay.

MN Is still available for free, just with the annoying (to me) ads. As the advice on MN has really helped me in the past I’m happy to pay a fiver and see how things go on the banner free version. I earn

jenganinja · 08/04/2020 15:05

Happy to give a monthly donation to womens aid, and I do feel worried for MN plight, but they've presumably been making a tidy profit over the years and have let the DM lift stories all the time and so on. I think £50 a year is way too much and out of touch. £2 a month or a voluntary donation maybe.

Reastie · 08/04/2020 15:05

I’m happy to support mn and appreciate the situ they’re in. They’re not going to charge for the site, just if you want to pimp it to premium. Unfortunately, I can’t justify that atm in our situ, but wish them all well through this.
