Am I or DP in the wrong?

So, Yesterday, my wife cancelled the sky sports subscription without consulting me. She also cancelled the BT sport subscription, which will be active by the end of April. I only found out today, when I couldn’t watch any of these channels.

I then confronted my wife as to why she had done this. She told me that there’s no sport to watch, so it’s a waste of money, but I told her she should have consulted me first. I still wanted to watch a few repeats on these channels.

AIBU, or is my wife in the wrong?

I would be annoyed if DP did this without consulting me first. It's just courtesy.

Candyfloss99 · 06/04/2020 14:05

Lol just resubscribe. It's logical for her to think if there's no sport happening why would you want a sports channel?

DustyMaiden · 06/04/2020 14:06

I suspended sky sports, no payment but still viewable.

Guyonhere1 · 06/04/2020 14:06

@candyfloss99 Because I still want to watch the repeats. It wasn’t her decision to make anyway because she doesn’t watch the channels. I can’t just resubscribe because the deal will be more expensive

Yes, she should have spoken to you first; it’s just rude that she didn’t.

Lazypuppy · 06/04/2020 14:07

Why would you not cancel them now when the companis are offering it? You just restart it when season starts again. Also, the way we've done it sky said we can still watch the channels. I think we've just paused them. Sky are offering as part of their response to covid

Wannabangbang · 06/04/2020 14:07

Depends who's paying for it and whether it can be afforded but she should have atleast told you.

What sport can they show, it's all been stopped so surely repeats equaling a waste of money

Guyonhere1 · 06/04/2020 14:09

She told me she cancelled it, so that means the channels won’t be available for viewing. Therefore, we’ll need a new deal 😉

My wife is the sports fan in our family. She agreed we should cancel our BT and Sky subscriptions, though, and was delighted to find the channels are still available to watch. Now if only I could drag her away from those Ryder Cup repeats....

Greendin · 06/04/2020 14:12

Who pays for it? If you pay for it and you think it's worth the money, re-instate it. If your wife pays for it then it's her call. I agree with her though, why pay for a sports channel when there's no sport. You can probably find highlights and repeats to watch on YouTube for free.

She should have discussed it with you first though.

Likefootball · 06/04/2020 14:17

No point in having sports channels as sport is a unique product it's only live once .
However if you spoke to Sky perhaps they would have suspended payment until the sport starts again.
Virgin have done this.

Guyonhere1 · 06/04/2020 14:18

@likefootball I asked my wife about this, and she said she didn’t know this was available. Now you have said this, I’m fuming with her 😡

To me it's out of order. Maybe she thinks you can save money but to not even discuss it is outrageous. It wouldn't cross my mind to take something away like that without consultation. My husband watches sky sports all the time. He's really been enjoying the repeats being shown. He watched liverpool vs Newcastle from about 20 idd years ago twice! It would never cross my mind to cancel it. I did however tell him I refuse to pay for it. He agrees this is fine. I contribute towards the rest if the sky cost.

Luce123456 · 06/04/2020 14:20

Is there a cooling off period and maybe you could undo the cancellation?

LottieRose92 · 06/04/2020 14:21

You are not but I'm sure she thought she was being helpful and not malicious so maybe let it go?

Guyonhere1 · 06/04/2020 14:21

@EmAndes we split the bill half each

Guyonhere1 · 06/04/2020 14:22

@Luce123456 considering I don’t watch Netflix, I was contemplating cancelling her Netflix subscription 😂🤣

CoffeeRunner · 06/04/2020 14:22

Who pays the bill? Has there been a change in your income recently?

clareOclareO · 06/04/2020 14:22

If she can make changes to the package without consulting you, I'd take that as a green light that you're allowed to make changes without consulting her.

Who is your provider? Last time I tried to cancel my subscription they made me give thirty days notice.

CanadaPolice · 06/04/2020 14:23

Surely anything to do with services and finances would at least warrant a conversation? It would in our house.

CoffeeRunner · 06/04/2020 14:24

X-posted with your reply. I would call them & say the package was cancelled in error. See what they say. But for the time being, you would have to pay the full cost (if there is any).

Guyonhere1 · 06/04/2020 14:26

@CoffeeRunner I’ll try that, thanks. We’re self employed, so no big change atm

OP posts:
Candyfloss99 · 06/04/2020 14:26

So you think she did it maliciously?

Guyonhere1 · 06/04/2020 14:28

@candyfloss99 all she said was that she thought it was the right thing to do considering there’s no live sport. I wouldn’t say she did this maliciously - I just think she lacks a bit of common sense
