Am I or DP in the wrong?

So, Yesterday, my wife cancelled the sky sports subscription without consulting me. She also cancelled the BT sport subscription, which will be active by the end of April. I only found out today, when I couldn’t watch any of these channels.

I then confronted my wife as to why she had done this. She told me that there’s no sport to watch, so it’s a waste of money, but I told her she should have consulted me first. I still wanted to watch a few repeats on these channels.

AIBU, or is my wife in the wrong?

If the OP is ringing them today, albeit he couldn't get through, then the subscription must be his. In which case how could she cancel it? Something doesn't add up here.

Pentium85 · 06/04/2020 18:28

@isabellerossignol

How on earth have you come to that conclusion?

isabellerossignol · 06/04/2020 18:31

@isabellerossignol

Because when you ring Sky, like every other company, they will only speak to the person who has the subscription.

moveandmove · 06/04/2020 18:31

I paused mine. Payments stop while there's no live sport but you can still watch the channels. Pay,ent automatically starts up again when live sports start.

I'd be livid with her.

Guyonhere1 · 06/04/2020 18:32

@isabellerossignol when did I say I was ringing them?

OP posts:
isabellerossignol · 06/04/2020 18:35

Can’t get through to them unfortunately, will try again tomorrow.

When I read that, I understood it to mean that you had tried to ring them.

Guyonhere1 · 06/04/2020 18:37

@isabellerossignol I’m authorised on her account

OP posts:
isabellerossignol · 06/04/2020 18:37

I’ll have to phone them up to check later on.

And the reason I took it to mean you had rung them was because it followed on from this post which said that you were going to ring them.

WifflyWaffle · 06/04/2020 18:38

I watch a LOT of sports on Sky / BT Sport and is be miffed if my husband cancelled this without discussing it first, especially since we (like you) share the money for bills. It’s really thoughtless. I can only think that maybe she doesn’t watch / enjoy it so doesn’t realise that repeats and player documentaries etc are on, so when she cancelled thought it was a no-brainer? Totally understand your annoyance. I guess a lot depends on whether she’s apologetic about it.

amusedbush · 06/04/2020 18:40

Totally incorrect. Our Sky is in DH’s name but he set up a password so they will speak to me when I call.

Indecisiveragazza · 06/04/2020 18:46

Thanks, he’sgot and amuse.

altiara · 06/04/2020 18:47

Thought she sounded proactive and trying not to waste money. (Irrelevant that you can afford to waste money).
As she made a mistake, just say so and one of you get it put back on.
Yes it’s annoying if you don’t have access but hardly the end of the world and you should have access until the next direct debit comes out.

Autumnwindinthewillows · 06/04/2020 18:49

I am the sport watcher and the sky subscription is in dh name. He talked to me about it and we agreed that we should suspend it for now then he went online (or whatever) to sort it

isabellerossignol · 06/04/2020 18:53

OK fair enough. Although Sky are very inconsistent because they wouldn't allow me to do that for our account (it's in my name) , nor would they allow my elderly mum to set up authorisation for me on her account. So I had assumed that they don't do it for anyone.

beachbreeze · 06/04/2020 18:53

Your DP was wrong not to consult you, but with good intentions thinking there wouldn't be any sports to watch. I'd let it go.

saraclara · 06/04/2020 18:54

Thought she sounded proactive and trying not to waste money.

Yep. That's EXACTLY what you'd say if a woman posted here that her male partner had unilaterally cancelled HER favourite channel without consultation. Right @altiara?

Guyonhere1 · 06/04/2020 18:56

I don’t want to get into an argument about how one would react to a woman in comparison to a man. It’s standard tbh, and I expect nothing else on Mumsnet.

Now I’ve had some feedback, which I’m grateful for, can I close this thread?

OP posts:
isabellerossignol · 06/04/2020 18:58

Actually, this thread has just shown me another inconsistency with Sky, with some people saying that when they have cancelled they have had another 30 days before the channels were actually unavailable. Whereas when I have cancelled, they've been unavailable immediately.

Guyonhere1 · 06/04/2020 19:00

That’s what I’ve been saying - they’ve been unavailable immediately

This is one of those threads we're I would give anything to hear the dps side of the story...... I suspect there is more to this than the op is saying.

isabellerossignol · 06/04/2020 19:02

Yes, I know you have. It was other posters who had questioned that. And as I said, I had questioned how you both had access to the account because Sky have always told me that's not possible. But you and others are saying that it is, so obviously they do it for some customers.

saraclara · 06/04/2020 19:04

...and again. Would you post that if a woman had posted that her male partner had done this?

Guyonhere1 · 06/04/2020 19:06

@saraclara you took the words right out of my mouth

OP posts:
usercheeselover · 06/04/2020 19:19

I'm just laughing that I concluded plausibly and the account is HERS

So. What are you watching on Netflix later? I can recommend Orphan Black or You

Rightthirdtime · 06/04/2020 19:22

Ah yes, apologies. We didn’t cancel (DW would never allow that!). We suspended payments.
