Is it anti-social to smoke in your garden?

Just that really, abiu to smoke cigarettes in my garden?

When I do, I notice my neighbour shut his window. It makes me feel awkward about doing it as I dont want to annoy him, but just wondered if other people even think about it annoying their neighbours? Or am i over thinking it?

I hate the smell of smoke, if my neighbour was smoking and I could smell it I would close the door or window. It's your garden though you have every right to smoke.

VladTheDictator · 02/04/2020 17:57

It isn’t very nice because if their house windows are open, the smell of smoke goes into their house. On the other hand, it’s your garden. Tricky one!

JustOneMoreStep · 02/04/2020 17:58

Depends on where you are standing to smoke ..... right next to a neighbour's window is very anti social, opposite end of the garden where they only know you are smoking is because they see you....YANBU

HerLadySheep · 02/04/2020 17:58

Yes, it's horrid but given that you can't really do much else at the moment it's a tricky one. Could you move further down your garden perhaps?
Our neighbours have the odd spliff in their garden and it reeks!

awkwardbuttons · 02/04/2020 17:59

Can you smoke out the front? It's your right to smoke there but I absolutely hate it when my neighbour does it. The worst is when he does it when I have washing out.

isabellerossignol · 02/04/2020 17:59

It's annoying when smoke blows in your window, but I wouldn't say it's antisocial to smoke in your own garden. Closing the window to stop it getting into his house makes sense.

Waveysnail · 02/04/2020 18:00

Only if you stand right at back door as then blows into neighbours. Dh always walks to bottom of our small garden

LexMitior · 02/04/2020 18:00

It’s your garden. You are doing something perfectly legal in it. He may not like it but I think he will just have to tolerate it.

My neighbours smoke in their garden. I don’t own the air and it’s okay.

Womencanlift · 02/04/2020 18:00

Depends where you are standing. If you are within a couple of feet of their window, even if in your garden, then yes it is antisocial

Smoking is a disgusting smell and not fair on others to have to put up with it. Although as pp said it’s a tricky one as it’s your garden

HollyBollyBooBoo · 02/04/2020 18:02

It's your garden so you can do what you want. But I'd close my windows as I can't abide the smell of smoke.

mypoorfurbaby · 02/04/2020 18:02

Smoking is antisocial full stop

APatchyTomCat · 02/04/2020 18:02

Yes, our old neighbour used to smoke in his garden and our bedroom would stink of it.

I wouldn't complain though, it's part and parcel of communal living- I just used to close the window.

CaptainHammer · 02/04/2020 18:03

I shut my window when my neighbour smokes otherwise it stinks out my whole flat. I wouldn’t tell her not to smoke though, she already stands as far away as possible.

If you’re standing right next to his window maybe move elsewhere if possible.

Jellycatspyjamas · 02/04/2020 18:03

Depends really, if you’re right next his window then yes, if you’re a good bit away, where smoke won’t drift into his window you’re fine.

TheFlis12345 · 02/04/2020 18:03

You would be amazed how far smoke smells travel. We are in a 2nd floor flat (and in a building with very high ceilings) and our ground floor neighbours tend to sit on their front wall, about 4 metres from the building, to smoke. If our windows are open there is a strong smell in seconds and we have to close them until they have stopped. You’re perfectly within your rights but I completely understand why your neighbour does what he does.

Itallgoingpetetong · 02/04/2020 18:03

Once it blows in through their window the smell will linger in their house.
My neighbour smokes in his garden. If he doesn’t want the smell in his house, and he’s a smoker, why would I want it in mine? It makes sense to shut the window.

aSofaNearYou · 02/04/2020 18:04

Just smoke as far away as possible from their window, it isn't nice when it comes in but realistically where else are you going to do it?

WestCovina · 02/04/2020 18:05

My neighbours smoke at the end of their garden so I don’t smell it if I’m in the house. I would also shut my windows if they were at the house end of the garden, not to be rude or make a point but I hate the smell of smoke. I don’t think negatively of my neighbours, it’s their garden to do what they like in!

2020YearOfTheGoat · 02/04/2020 18:05

I feel the same OP, am working from home & obviously not going out so am smoking much more in my garden than previously. I feel bad for my neighbours but as I have a tiny garden, there’s not really anything I can do.
Am very conscious of open windows & people shutting them.

ImFreeToDoWhatIWant · 02/04/2020 18:06

It's your garden and currently you can legally smoke in it.

I still think it's scummy and a revolting stench and yes I'd close my windows too.

When I rule the world I'll ban smoking everywhere except inside people's own homes. You want to smoke, then don't subject me to any part of it!

MsMD · 02/04/2020 18:06

I hate smoking but I wouldn't say you're unreasonable. Its your garden. Assuming you do what you can to minimize disruption to him i.e. standing as far away from his window as you can, it's one of those annoying things you have to put up with if you live close to others.

Mummy102 · 02/04/2020 18:08

Thanks for the replies. I just worry he will hate me, I wouldn't like to have a bad relationship with any of my neighbours. It makes feel awkward so I guess he may be annoyed by it. I will go further up the garden and see if that makes a difference.
I have been an on off smoker for a while and in the periods of time that I was not smoking, other peoples smoke surprisingly didn't bother me, but I can totally see why it bothers others, it isn't nice. Just wanted to know if i was wrong for doing it.

We are lucky that we are detached, but its your garden, im sure your neighbors do thing to annoy you.

MaccaPacca81 · 02/04/2020 18:08

Your neighbour is gonna love BBQ season!!!

iklboo · 02/04/2020 18:08

Smoking smells disgusting during and afterwards. I'd close my windows too but I wouldn't complain to you.
