Is it anti-social to smoke in your garden?

Just that really, abiu to smoke cigarettes in my garden?

When I do, I notice my neighbour shut his window. It makes me feel awkward about doing it as I dont want to annoy him, but just wondered if other people even think about it annoying their neighbours? Or am i over thinking it?

Hate is a strong word OP but I would be pretty sure he doesn’t think that highly of you especially if he is a non smoker

The fact that he has to close his windows to stop his home smelling of your smoke probably means he isn’t particularly impressed. The majority of us non smokers do look down on smokers especially if it is affects our life/home

TheGoogleMum · 02/04/2020 18:50

It's better than doing it in the house but to non smokers it can be very unpleasant. It would annoy me tbh as inhaling it makes me cough, but it's your garden and your addiction so you aren't technically doing anything wrong. If you worry about being liked I would quit tbh though (and for numerous health reasons you will already be aware of)

DianaT1969 · 02/04/2020 18:55

I don't know about 'hating' you. That seems extreme. But he would probably prefer a neighbour who didn't smoke, causing a horrible smell in his home. He might not want to hang out with you.
But I totally understand why you are stressed.

anotherlittlechicken · 02/04/2020 18:57

@Mummy102 Just smoke as far away as you can from the windows, and I am sure your neighbour will be OK with it. They are closing the window to stop the smoke (and the whiff from it,) coming into their house, not because they hate you! Smile

So if you CAN smoke as far away as possible, then that would be helpful. (You could also go for a little walk around the block while you have your smoke if possible.......)

Our old neighbour - now moved - smoked 4 or 5 ciggies a day outside, and we could smell it when we were in the garden, and even inside (in the back of the house) sometimes. But they were lovely in every way, and I would never have had a go at them, as everything else about them was great. They were quiet, hard working, considerate, and friendly.

You sound lovely actually. Like you actually care about your neighbour. Flowers

anotherlittlechicken · 02/04/2020 18:58

@Samcro

We are lucky that we are detached, but its your garden, im sure your neighbors do thing to annoy you.

What difference does being in a detached house make if someone is smoking in the garden? Confused

Stet · 02/04/2020 19:00

I admit I would find it pretty horrible if I could smell it in our own garden or house. My DD plays outside and I don't want her breathing in cigarette smoke. It's absolutely not the same as barbecues; I don't mind the smell of that coming from neighbours' gardens at all, but cigarette smoke is particularly foul. But I wouldn't say anything, just grumble silently Grin

TheWordmeister · 02/04/2020 19:02

We quite liked our new neighbour until we realised he smokes. We have gone right off him Grin

We don't want to smell his stinky fags. But that is completely unreasonable as he can do what he likes in his (massive) garden. If we lived closer and the disgusting smoke was coming in through our windows, I wouldn't hesitate to have a polite word.

Skysblue · 02/04/2020 19:04

He probably does find it horrible. Of course he closes the windows, why would he want his house to smell of your cigarette smoke?

I think you should either smoke inside or quit. It’s not like he can just go spend the day out is it?

LittleBeauPeep · 02/04/2020 19:05

We have new neighbours who keep smoking on their patio which is level to mine. It's not very pleasant. Thankfully we have a fairly decent sized garden so I can move me and the dcs onto the lawn away from the smoke but I must admit I'd prefer it if the neighbours could smoke at the back of their garden especially as they have another sunny patio area there but we don't (and can't, we rent so can't make any major changes to the garden)

Caryler · 02/04/2020 19:10

I would shut the window if I could smell it. I would find it anti-social to smoke near your neighbours property if you have the option of moving down the garden or what have you to help the smell - if I could see my neighbour making an active attempt to not impact me, then I’d not think less of them. I’d still close the window if it smelt indoors though - just wouldn’t think less of you 😁

LooQoo · 02/04/2020 19:13

@Womencanlift

“The majority of us non smokers do look down on smokers especially if it is affects our life/home”

I’ve never met anyone who is perfect in real life, so I doubt they exist on mumsnet. Maybe you should have a think about what you do that may make some people look down on you. They’re just too polite to tell you.

Quickquestion2020 · 02/04/2020 19:15

Would you prefer he let you stink his house out and make him ill? I'd hate to live next to a smoker. We have pot heads two doors down and I'd rather the smell of weed any day but that still annoys me.

Reginabambina · 02/04/2020 19:18

If you’re the one smoking why should his house be the one that smells? Just smoke inside instead of inconveniencing other people.

anotherlittlechicken · 02/04/2020 19:22

@Quickquestion2020

I'd rather the smell of weed any day.

Oh hell no! Weed smells utterly foul!

Womencanlift · 02/04/2020 19:24

@LooQoo where did I was say I was perfect?

I just don’t like to be around other people’s smoke and from the other comments on this post other people feel the same.

But yes I would judge someone who makes a choice to come outside to smoke so their own house doesn’t smell/their families are not effected by the smoke but it therefore means that it impacts their neighbours.

Mummy102 · 02/04/2020 19:25

Thank you for all your replies.
Isn't it a shame you can't unhypocritically look down on someone who openly admits they look down on people 😬

Totally understand why people are bothered about cigarettes smoke though and I will try to minimise any impact on him further, better still hopefully be back to vaping very soon!

Unhypothetically**

I'll be completely honest. I always wish my neighbour would smoke outside their front door (we have front gardens). As when they're smoking I have to go inside or close our patio doors. But I know I have no right to ask this and it would be completely inappropriate to ask so I just put up with it. I don't see him in a bad light, I would prefer if he didn't smoke of course, but I don't dislike him for it. It's just personal preference. But closing windows is no big deal.

OddBoots · 02/04/2020 19:29

i close my window when my neighbour smokes int eh garden, I try to close it quietly and hope they can't hear it. I don't like the smell but I know it is their right to do it.

voiceofsanitary · 02/04/2020 19:30

Is it anti-social to waft lung-damaging carcinogens into someone else's house at this time.......?

YES

Mummy102 · 02/04/2020 19:32
  • actually ignore the correction Grin
OP posts:
lyralalala · 02/04/2020 19:33

It annoys the life out of me that my neighbour smokes as far away from his house as possible, because his wife hates the smell, which means he happily stands a couple of feet from my kitchen window even though he has a massive garden.

BeetrootRocks · 02/04/2020 19:35

Lol at telling people they can't smoke outside now

Has anyone told you that cigarettes are non essential and you shouldn't have then yet, op?

Sadly I've started smoking again with all this, my MH has gone off a cliff. I'm smoking out the front though so the kids can't see Grin

Mummy102 · 02/04/2020 19:39

Haha I was surprised I was sold them at the shop! I don't like to use situations as an excuse, because I am weak when it comes to smoking anyway but yes I agree, it has set mine off too! Which hasn't helped. Hope you're ok though! X

HappyHammy · 02/04/2020 19:40

Can you smoke inside then you dont need to worry about upsetting your neighbour
