Is it anti-social to smoke in your garden?

Just that really, abiu to smoke cigarettes in my garden?

When I do, I notice my neighbour shut his window. It makes me feel awkward about doing it as I dont want to annoy him, but just wondered if other people even think about it annoying their neighbours? Or am i over thinking it?

You do have the right to do this. With a horrific pandemic going on that attacks the lungs though, I'd suggest now is as good a time as any to quit smoking. :)

LastTrainEast · 02/04/2020 18:09

It's your garden. They can do things in their garden you don't like.

Cheerbear23 · 02/04/2020 18:10

Yes it is but if you’re intent on smoking I don’t know what else you can do.

Mummy102 · 02/04/2020 18:11

@2020YearOfTheGoat .. it makes you feel like you should put it out and leave the garden doesn't it. I have found myself trying to hide out of view. Because i feel bad about it.

Throckmorton you're not wrong, but after more than 10 years of not smoking I've been thinking this might be my last chance to start again :) I still really miss it.

Mummy102 · 02/04/2020 18:13

@Throckmorton definitely something to think about! I have always struggled to keep away, even when I've been a non smoker, I've still vaped. Does worry me, very good point.

EasyTarget · 02/04/2020 18:13

As others, I would definitely close my windows, but wouldn't complain because you're in your own garden. It stinks though.
Maybe try a vape?

StoneofDestiny · 02/04/2020 18:14

Assume you are smoking in the garden because you don't like the smell of smoke in your house.
So, no difficulty understanding why the neighbour would shut their window To stop it going into theirs.

Mummy102 · 02/04/2020 18:15

@LastTrainEast strangely I have just started up again since the week of the lockdown. I wont use the pandemic as an excuse. But I work as Community carer and definitely have felt much more pressure recently.

OP posts:
Wilmalovescake · 02/04/2020 18:16

Is it antisocial? Yes
Does it stink? Yes
Are you within your rights? Sadly yes.

NemophilistRebel · 02/04/2020 18:16

You have every right to smoke as he does to shut his window

I actually moved house because of a next door neighbour who smoked so often I couldn’t open my windows

I know people are addicted but I just don’t understand why people do it and think other people won’t mind

Carrie7469 · 02/04/2020 18:18

I smoke in my garden. I think it’s fine. Enjoy it 🤗

EmeraldShamrock · 02/04/2020 18:18

Yes it is if it is going in his window.
BBQ smell is different to cigarette smoke.
Move down the garden or use the back garden.

Mummy102 · 02/04/2020 18:20

@StoneofDestiny it's not that I don't understand why he shuts them. I was just worried more about him hating me

OP posts:
Herja · 02/04/2020 18:21

People always do things other people dislike. I hate the smell of BBQ, I am not very keen on wood smoke in my washing either. I really dislike the people who warm up their car outside my front window.

ALL of these are legal, as is me smoking. If any of my neighbours gave a toss about the various, offensive, air polluting things they do, I would consider caring about my cigarette smoke affecting them. They don't, so nor do I.

Happily, everyone seems to manage fine with window closing.

Throckmorton · 02/04/2020 18:22

I really sympathise with the stress you must be under, and thank you so much for the work you are doing! Should you decide to quit smoking, have a virtual high-five from an internet random :)

StoneofDestiny · 02/04/2020 18:22

Doubt he will hate you, but will definitely thing the fresh air he wants is not fresh, but smelly and harmful.

Nuttyaboutnutella · 02/04/2020 18:23

I detest the smell of cigarette smoke. However, if my neighbour smoked, they're perfectly entitled to, even in their own garden. I wouldn't want it in my house though so yes, I'd shut the window

Darbs76 · 02/04/2020 18:24

We had a neighbour who smoked on her doorstep when we lived in a terrace. It came right into our house and we had young babies at the time. We always closed the window. She kept doing it. We never said anything and never hated her but wondered why she couldn’t go out the back

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 02/04/2020 18:26

I always stood on the other side to our neighbours. You are entitled to smoke in your garden, but you should try to make the impact on others as low as possible

TemoraryUsername · 02/04/2020 18:27

I hate having neighbours who smoke. I have to shut windows and doors when id le them open and I can't enjoy my garden when they are out there smoking.

I wouldn't say anything to you because you're not doing anything illegal, but I'd be secretly hating on you.

RonnieBarkingMad · 02/04/2020 18:28

It’s your garden and you have every right to smoke in it. Just as he has every right to shut his window if he doesn’t like the smell. He can’t control what you do in your own home, cigarettes are legal to smoke and that is that. If he doesn’t like it he will have to sadly get used to it and over it.

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 02/04/2020 18:33

This is MN, you're not allowed to do the following in your garden: BBQ, allow children to play in it, smoke, have parties, or basically use it all except to quietly sit on a lounger reading an approved classical tome. YANBU. Carry on. Our neighbour's a weed smoker. I have bigger things to worry about right now.

user1353245678533567 · 02/04/2020 18:39

If someone takes the trouble to smoke outside their own home because presumably they don't want smoke inside it, but stands underneath your open windows so the smoke all goes in your house it's inconsiderate, isn't it?

Cigarette smoke goes further than you can see it go, most of the fumes it creates are invisible. Like exhaust fumes.

m0therofdragons · 02/04/2020 18:39

Doing anything that negatively impacts on others is wrong.
