Is it anti-social to smoke in your garden?

Mummy102 · 02/04/2020 17:54

Just that really, abiu to smoke cigarettes in my garden?

When I do, I notice my neighbour shut his window. It makes me feel awkward about doing it as I dont want to annoy him, but just wondered if other people even think about it annoying their neighbours? Or am i over thinking it?

OP posts:

My neighbour only smokes weed. He's a wonderful neighbour, though. Have had some real wankers for neighbours in my life, I'm definitely happier with a waft of cannabis over all-night raves,

AnneOfCloves · 02/04/2020 22:22

You have the right to do it but I'd feel resentful. It's an awful smell.

If you smoked at the end of your garden as far away from other houses as possible, fair enough, you're trying to minimise the smell while you indulge in an extremely odiferous habit.

Outside your back door? Sure, you're legally entitled but I would harbour resentment because it's a penetrating, lingering and revolting smell.

It takes washing curtains and other soft furnishings to get the smell of cigarette smoke out of a room. It lingers for days. If you've never smoked, it's really obvious.

Bluebellbike · 02/04/2020 22:22

My next door neighbour smokes outside her back door a lot through the day. The prevailing wind blows it straight through the fence. If I am sitting on my bench enjoying the sunshine and watching my rabbits play out I have to shoo the rabbits back in their pen and go indoors. This is because I hate the smell of the smoke. It makes me cough. I have to lock my rabbits up as there are lots of foxes near me which come into the gardens even in the daytime.

I'll put my head above the parapet voice and hazard a guess that most of us aren't adolescent Israeli males.

voiceofsanitary · 02/04/2020 22:24

This does not mean they have not understood your point.

You haven't though, if you think this Because you're assuming your own moral superiority should be a barometer by which medical treatment should be meted out, voice, and likening people who participate in legal activities to murderers, FGS, that's off the bloody charts.

Granted, that may be because I'm not explaining it very well - but you haven't understood.

I don't think anyone is killing anyone's 'innocent Nan'. I was trying to draw attention to the ridiculousness of the idea that visiting a shop more than once a week is actually worse than what OP is doing.

It's not. OP is doing worse. Or was doing worse - if she's decided to stop smoking near her neighbour's house.
I'm trying to do this because I think both smokers AND covid-hysterics are knobbers.

voiceofsanitary · 02/04/2020 22:26

Hopefully any smokers reading will see the parallel and stop being such knobbers - especially if they are the 'YOU'RE KILLING MY INNOCENT NAN YOU COVIDIOTS!!!' type.

vodkaredbullgirl · 02/04/2020 22:28

oh fuck off

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 02/04/2020 22:28

Granted, that may be because I'm not explaining it very well - but you haven't understood.

Keep telling yourself that Hmm.

Sigh. I posted that in the very same post I said I was honing in on the UK one though? SO I RECOGNISED THAT!

Having said that I can't actually find it - only the article that quotes from it. Here it is anyway - as I said previously, IQ and smoking is the opposite correlation in the US to the UK.

Fluffy40 · 02/04/2020 22:34

There’s not many places you can smoke.

Surely it all blows away.

BeetrootRocks · 02/04/2020 22:44

'Smoking is much worse than covid - deaths wise'

Well we need to wait and see really don't we.

?

Another strange post.

You would say then, ban smoking, and let everyone out?

HillAreas · 02/04/2020 22:44

Unless you’re doing it in the middle of a field somewhere Far Away, yes smoking is anti social and probably bothering someone or other in the vicinity. Just the nature of the beast.
You’re not wrong to do it in your own garden but you’ll probably have to get used to the fact that you are potentially pissing someone off and perhaps see what you can do to minimise that if it’s bothering you.
My MIL will smoke either at the front or back of the house depending on what’s going on at the time weather wise, if her neighbours are out enjoying their own gardens etc. It still reeks but at least a she’s trying to keep it to herself as far as possible.

TrainspottingWelsh · 02/04/2020 22:46

Ah, yes, voiceofinsanity now you're USING CAPITALS we all see whatever parallel you're banging on about and agree with everything you say.

May I suggest rolling a fat one and relaxing over a few tokes until you are calm enough to post rationally?

AmelieTaylor · 02/04/2020 22:49

@Mummy102. You asked if it woukd make your neighbour hate you?

I hate the smell of smoke. Really hate it. My neighbour smokes, she smiles outside our back doorstep. She doesn’t smoke inside her Ian house because it makes the paintwork go yellow... so instead it goes into my house 🙄

Do I hate my neighbour? No, I actually really really like her & she’s a carer too

Do I wish to fuck she’d stop smoking? Yes & now more than ever fir her & her partners sake as much as mine. I’d quite like them both to live through this!!

You too! Give it up again - do your lungs a favour 🌷

MoonBaby1 · 02/04/2020 23:18

I’m still enjoying this thread just to see what an irate voiceofsanitary might type (in angry capitals) next. Grin

vodkaredbullgirl · 02/04/2020 23:25

Run out of links probably Smile

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 03/04/2020 08:58

This thread descended into something else😂 Killing nans. Wow.

People shouldn't smoke inside. Not only it's worse, it also digs it's way into plaster. The smell never goes away. It does not do that when you get a little bit of smoke in from outside...

I get the starting again. I stopped last year and have to say that cravings have certainly come back these past few weeks!

Penners99 · 03/04/2020 09:08

Smoking is anti-social. That is all.

LastTrainEast · 03/04/2020 10:14

"The whole flat stinks of her filthy disgusting smoke - my carpets, curtains etc. Even if I have the windows closed it still smells." lol what nonsense.

I think my favorite anti-smoking post was someone who said that they had a parcel of clothing that was briefly in a van in which someone had previously smoked (not when the parcel was in there) and that after unwrapping it the contents was so contaminated that multiple washings of the clothes inside wouldn't remove the smell.

Well of course washing wouldn't as it was in her head in the first place.

Gin4thewin · 03/04/2020 10:20

I smoke in my garden and so do my neighbours. My back door and kitchen window were swapped around by previous house owner so our back doors and either side of the fence. Only thing i hate is when he stands at his back door smoking multiple joints of weed and it makes my house reek.

jellybean85 · 03/04/2020 10:32

If it helps I'm the neighbour in this scenario (terraced houses with decent sized garden) I always close the window when my neighbour smokes in the garden. They're a lovely couple and I absolutely don't hate him Smile we have a good relationship but I just don't like the smell. When I see or smell him smoking just pop the windows closed until later. It's no big deal. They're entitled to enjoy their garden however they like

Hoggleludo · 03/04/2020 15:06

@Mummy102

Why do you smoke in your garden?

madcatladyforever · 03/04/2020 15:12

It wouldn't bother me, I'd just shut any open windows so it didn't get in the house.
I burn a lot of charcoal incense and I'm sure that occasionally pisses the neighbours off.
Live and let live really.

madcatladyforever · 03/04/2020 15:16

I moved into a house four weeks ago where the previous owner smoked around 30 a day. It smelt rank when I first moved in.
I've managed to get rid of the smell completely now. Aquavacced all the carpets and cleaned the place and I can't smell it at all. I am very sensitive to cigarette smoke, I don't like it.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 03/04/2020 15:20

Cigarette smoke can quite often trigger a migraine for me, so I would shut my windows. But I also recognise that its your garden and you can do what you like.
