Is it anti-social to smoke in your garden?

Just that really, abiu to smoke cigarettes in my garden?

When I do, I notice my neighbour shut his window. It makes me feel awkward about doing it as I dont want to annoy him, but just wondered if other people even think about it annoying their neighbours? Or am i over thinking it?

I don't smoke inside because I rent my home & respect that it's not technically mine to do as I wish. But even if I owned a property I probably wouldn't smoke inside. But just an update I have smoked further down the garden today before my shift and the neighbours window has remained open, so that was obviously an issue for him and I'm glad it's resolved without any awkward conversations or him having be annoyed any longer.

looked through the thread and couldn't find any mention of wind direction, although in 10 pages I may have missed it. Smokers should always stand downwind of other people and any open windows/doors. Also check to see where the smoke is going. And please keep inhaling, nothing more irritating and smelly than a smoker who just waves the thing around. You lit it, smoke it!

wind direction is changing in the UK today so that may be the difference and why your neighbour is able to keep his window open.

intrigued why smokers don't smoke inside though. Surely if you didn't like the smell you wouldn't smoke?

You’re perfectly entitled to smoke in your garden. I’d hate it if my neighbour did because I hate the smell of cigarette smoke. I wouldn’t complain though obviously

@mencken I would assume children would be a factor to why people wouldn't smoke inside. As previous posters have said everyone has been advised to smoke outside in recent years, so maybe that's why? Smokers generally can't smell old smoke, unless of course it's really bad. So I don't think smokers are smoking outside due to not liking the smell. Just some thoughts

My neighbour smokes. I can smell it in my utility room. With my clean washing

I used to smoke myself. I cannot stand the smell! Oh. My mum still smokes and my god. When I go hone. My clothes. Makes me want to vomit.

Hate hate it. Yuck

When I was a child. I always remember someone coming up to me. Sniffing me and said. Your mum smokes doesn't she

I was mortified. Couldn't do that to my own child.

You should never smoke in the front garden. It's ok to smoke in the back garden so long as your garden is large and you are a good distance from other people's property. You shouldn't smoke within a few metres of someone else's home. If your garden is small or you don't have one, just smoke inside (and close your windows). Obviously you have to stay inside at the moment, put when the coronavirus restrictions are lifted it's fine to go to the park and smoke there if you prefer to do it out in the open.

No OP, it's not anti social.
I don't understand people saying their neighbours cig smoke makes their home smell if they have windows open, or they can't sit in their garden if the neighbours are smoking in theirs.
My neighbours on both sides of me smoke in their gardens and I've never smelt it in my home, even with my windows open and I've never been bothered with it when I've been sat in my garden.
I don't smoke, I never have done.
I can think of worse things a neighbour can do than enjoy their cigs.

Great news. I’m glad your saw the obvious solution and took it. If only other smokers would have the decency to do the same, instead of taking the view that they can do as they please so long as they are outdoors, then there would be much less antipathy towards smokers in general.

Easy solution OP - nobody put out 👏👏
