Does anyone agree with the continuing claims particularly amongst a lot of celebrities claim that the uk is fundamentally racist particularly in relations to Meghan-Markle.

I think as a country she was welcomed with open arms.

I don't know if the UK as a whole is racist but the tabloid press and certain other media certainly are.

WendyMoiraAngelaDarling · 16/01/2020 14:30

didn't even know Meghan is 'black' when I first knew of her

Neither did I. In the millisecond that I considered her background I believed her to be of Arabic or Mediterranean descent. Roll your eyes as much as you want at that. It's true Smile

bluebells100 · 16/01/2020 15:54

must I also make a strict point of commenting on other royals negatively at the same time as any comment about MM even though we weren't discussing them

No don’t, we never have done for the rest of them. Why should MM be any different. Some people are bloody obsessed..

bluebells100 · 16/01/2020 16:00

I don’t think any of this is about creating a fairer or more equal society. This is about pitching one group against another. It’s not going to lead anywhere good. Can’t people see this?
I totally agree with this. It’s an evil agenda.

thecatsthecats · 16/01/2020 16:46

I'm with you on this. I only found out because I asked DH why she had a black father in Suits Blush

(I seem to use odd criteria in my head for recognising people. My brain seems to go off height/facial features before bloody obvious markers. I pointed out a WOC once to my boss as my 'sister' in the train station, completely missing her skin tone... For what it's worth, my DH thinks my 'so-and-so looks like x' comments between white people to be completely bonkers also.)

phoenixrosehere · 16/01/2020 16:56

I think the vast majority of the people who dislike MM do so because she is a fake and disrespectful woman, full of her own self-importance. Not because she happens to have mixed heritage.

This is the type of comment I don’t understand. Never met the person, yet have decided she is all these things and deserving of this ridicule without ever having a conversation with her.

How is she fake or disrespectful? What has she exactly done for someone to say these things?

I’ve seen stories bashing Meghan for the same things that Kate has did or done or other royals, yet no one was saying Kate was breaking royal protocol or being attention-seeking. It’s only seems to be an issue when Meghan does it.

phoenixrosehere · 16/01/2020 17:00

Hmm

Racism
Racism
Racism
ColaFreezePop · 16/01/2020 17:10

@thecatsthecats from the people I know it isn't uncommon to have a brother or sister of a different skin colour and ethnicity. Granted most of the latter are over 40. Oh and they are definitely fine tuned to racism because of it.

crestedrobin · 16/01/2020 17:13

What are these things that other royals have done the same. I don't see how they can have, given that everyone's different. They don't do the same at all.

phoenixrosehere · 16/01/2020 17:24

@crestedrobin

Meghan was criticised for guest editing for Vogue, yet Prince Charles guest edited for Country Living twice, DOC Kate did the Huffington Post, and Prince Harry for BBC radio.

crestedrobin · 16/01/2020 17:28

Prince Charles has had loads of criticism over the years, so has Kate. Everyone gets their turn. It'll be someone else before long. Probably because most people feel aggrieved at the injustice of a monarchy.

phoenixrosehere · 16/01/2020 17:29

Over guest-editing though. Really?

crestedrobin · 16/01/2020 17:31

Regarding the cradling of the bump, every woman does it, just not all the time. If Kate was constantly doing it people would have been equally irritated I'm sure.

thecatsthecats · 16/01/2020 18:08

@ColaFreezePop yes, but my boss already knew my sister was white (she looks a bit like an actress so I'd shown him a picture).

I'm not claiming to be colour blind, I just find it annoying when people claim its impossible to mistake a mixed race person for a white one.

SoVeryLost · 16/01/2020 18:30

@bluebells100 & @RunningAwaywiththeCircus I’ll stop looking for it when it stops existing. While people treat some of the people are care about as less than human, I’ll see it and highlight.

How is it acceptable to tell people to stop looking for racism while racism exists and affects people who have done nothing except hace the misfortune to have born a certain colour. I say the same about classism, sexism etc.

bluebells100 · 16/01/2020 19:18

soverylost

Racism will always exist. I deplore it. However we can’t say it’s racist to dislike MM. She gets racist comments, and that’s deplorable, however that doesn’t mean that all the people that dislike her are racist. She’s a human being, she should never be defined by her race, but we shouldn’t automatically assume that just because vile racist comments have been made about her, all the people who dislike her are racist.

MM comes across as a not very nice person, her colour is irrelevant, and there’s no point in saying why don’t we think the same about Kate, why should we, she’s a different person and actually seems likeable. For most of us that’s NOTHING to do with race.

We are allowed to dislike who we want. Anyone who dislikes someone because of their colour are weird, vile nasty bigots, but I don’t think they’re in the majority.

ColaFreezePop · 16/01/2020 20:02

@bluebells100 do you personally know the or had any personal interaction with the Duchess of Sussex, or do you know someone who personally knows her?

If you don't you are not commenting on her actual character but on what you think she is like due to what you have read in the tabloids. These tabloids have very recently attacked black and mixed-ethnicity footballers while praising their white team mates for doing the same things for their families.

Cool0lady0 · 16/01/2020 20:04

I am mixed raced (half Persian), I find it UNBELIEVABLE any criticism of MM is being labelled racist. I can’t stand her, she comes across as a narcissist to me. 🤷‍♀️

malylis · 16/01/2020 20:24

yea, again why is that ?
Racist.

bluebells100 · 16/01/2020 20:36

Cola The same with any public figure, we don’t know them personally but we build up our opinions on what we DO see. That’s why we can like some (even though we don’t know them ) and dislike others. We all have our likes and dislikes of famous people.....without actually knowing them.

SoVeryLost · 16/01/2020 20:59

@Bluebells100 have you met her? My friend has and said she was lovely. Spent time and was genuinely interested in talking to her. Of course you can dislike her however, maybe think why you don’t like her and if your reasons have any basis in fact.

SamanthaBrique · 16/01/2020 21:11

Regarding the cradling of the bump, every woman does it, just not all the time. If Kate was constantly doing it people would have been equally irritated I'm sure.

You only think she did it all the time because the tabloids chose to only use photos of her doing it. If you look on Getty there are plenty where she isn't. But that didn't suit the "Meghan is always holding her bump" narrative so they weren't used.

Cool0lady0 · 16/01/2020 21:12

have you met her? My friend has and said she was lovely. Spent time and was genuinely interested in talking to her

WHAT?! 😂 You can’t be this naive surely? Most abusers are master manipulators & charm everyone around them? It’s textbook behaviour. You think she’d be rude to people in public? I’m not saying she’s an abuser but you can’t judge someone by how they act in a public setting.

bluebells100 · 16/01/2020 21:15

Soverylost No I’ve never met her. But meeting someone once and they seemed “lovely” doesn’t really mean much does it. But please don’t patronise telling me to “have a think why I don’t like her”. Ask that to all the many others who don’t, without trying to imply there’s racism going on when there isn’t.

bluebells100 · 16/01/2020 21:18

Narcissism at its finest Cool
