Does anyone agree with the continuing claims particularly amongst a lot of celebrities claim that the uk is fundamentally racist particularly in relations to Meghan-Markle.

I think as a country she was welcomed with open arms.

Yes - I did use the term uppity and I can guarantee you it has nothing to do with the colour of her skin. She's just a little too confident for my liking. She lacks a bit of grace and humility. Perhaps it comes from being a tv actor with some fame - she could do with toning down her arrogance I suppose.

AraGrand · 09/01/2020 04:54

I genuinely couldn't give a shite if she was ginger. I just don't like her!

TimeForDinnerDinnerDinner · 09/01/2020 04:57

missyoumuch
@AraGranddid you actually use the term “uppity” for MM and then insist you’re nit racist?!

EXCELLENT point. It's funny how quickly that word rears up in a discussion like this. It doesn't take long to scratch the veneer...

AraGrand · 09/01/2020 04:58

If I was to compare the two duchesses - I would describe Kate as demure and Meghan as bolshy.

She's just too difficult and arsey. Everything seems to have to be on her terms - with no regard for the institution she has joined.

TimeForDinnerDinnerDinner · 09/01/2020 04:59

The fact you need to keep adjusting how you express your viewpoint on this matter says it all.
Anyway, as you were...

AraGrand · 09/01/2020 05:00

Well to the posters who are criticising me - how would you characterise Meghan? Does she seem nice? Approachable? Identifiable?

AraGrand · 09/01/2020 05:03

I think we all warmed to Kate or Katherine as she has an air of vulnerability about her. Meghan on the other hand seems to be made of tougher stuff.

I personally felt sorry for Kate joining the Royal Family, but I don't feel the same about Meghan - probably because she had no intention of conforming remotely. She doesn't seem as fragile in a way. She just doesn't endear herself to the British public for some reason. I could muse on why for the next 24 hours, but I can't actually put my finger on the why.

missyoumuch · 09/01/2020 05:04

As an ethnic minority woman with relatives who look very similar to her, yes she is highly identifiable to me and many others.

As for her personality, I have no clue, I’ve not met her.

missyoumuch · 09/01/2020 05:05

I will add the way she featured Afro-Caribbean artists at the wedding was very inspirational to many BME in addition to giving many a global platform they’d never have had otherwise.

AraGrand · 09/01/2020 05:06

Well with a daughter who has the same mix as her - her racial mix is unimportant to me. I literally wouldn't notice her colour if people didn't keep banging on about it in an attempt to undermine her detractors.

And yet the word that came to mind when you criticised her was one that’s almost exclusively used by anti-black racists. Right you don’t see her color ara

SoleBizzz · 09/01/2020 05:11

I like Meghan

Butchyrestingface · 09/01/2020 05:11

Not only has MM experienced racism but you’d think feminism had never happened whenever a thread like this crops up.

“Bolshy”, “uppity”, “not demure”, “too confident”, “false”, “controlling“, “arrogant”, “difficult”, “arsey”, “lacks grace and humility”.

Can you imagine anyone ever criticising a bloke on the grounds that he was “too confident” and not “demurel enough?

And I’m not some slathering royalist. I’d ship the entire RF off to Timbuktu.

AraGrand · 09/01/2020 05:15

@missyoumuch I would really appreciate if you would stop implying that I'm racist. It's goady as fuck and irritating the shit out of me. I'll post a photo of my mixed race dd if that will fucking satisfy you, but don't think I'm going to sit here and have it insinuated that I'm racist for simply not liking Meghan fucking Markle. I don't fucking like her! Not one slight thing to do with her colour. End of fucking story. You're really pissing me off now.

AraGrand · 09/01/2020 05:17

Jesus - you can't pin racism on me so now you're saying I'm misogynist. Get a grip.

missyoumuch · 09/01/2020 05:19

I'm not implying it AraGrand.

eaglejulesk · 09/01/2020 05:22

@AraGrand - Go you! It seems to many MNers that if you say you don't like someone of colour then you are being racist - which irritates the heck out of me. We are all allowed to dislike people of any race - I don't like a lot of white people, but that apparently is acceptable. I don't actually think of MM as anything but American.

@NurseButtercup thank you for posting that link

Well it didn’t take one for someone to use a racist word did it, claiming to not be racist because you’re child isn’t white is not an excuse. Nigel Farage claims his non-british wife means he isn’t nationalist, but we all know truth.

Sadly racism is a problem in the UK, as is nationalism. If the UK didn’t have an issue with racism we wouldn’t have an open and proud racist, sexist pig as our prime minister.

Has anyone been to a football match lately? You regularly hear very racist language during matches, sadly some fans do impressions of monkeys when a black player has the ball.

I’m Asian, I’m at subjected to direct racism at work, a member of staff purposely calls me the same name as the only other asian member of staff in our department, we look nothing alike, we are not the same ethnicity. She will sometimes call me the other one, ‘Indify’ my name or use a faux indian accent (I am not even indian). HR choose not to do anything as “it’s just her sense of humour and you shouldn’t use the race card” spoken like a true racist.

I was subjected to a lot of racism at school, college and University, I’m fairly thick skinned so it didn’t get to me. Words/phrases I am still subjected to as an adult on a fairly regular basis Paki, darkie, brownie, the ethnic, curry fingers, to name a few.

The UK does have a problem with racism, until we acknowledge it properly it will never improve. Just like with sexism and homophobia, the UK needs a shift in societal attitude to make any improvements. We also need more people to speak out on a day to day basis when witness racism, sexism, homophobia etc.

Everyone has unconscious bias, we can’t change that and anyone who says they don’t have it is a liar, why pretend you don’t notice someones skin colour, of course you do everyone does.

Everyone will sometimes say something out of ignorance, when that person is corrected if they aren’t racist, sexist etc they will stop using that word, those who are racist etc will continue using it.

AraGrand · 09/01/2020 06:23

Where is the racism on this thread?

MopsRUs · 09/01/2020 06:25

Of course racism exists. But the whole country? Definitely not.

AraGrand · 09/01/2020 06:26

When people are racist, they're racist.
If someone doesn't like someone who happens to be a different race to them, they are not necessarily being racist. They just don't like them!
Why everyone makes everything about race when it's clearly not, the Lord only knows.

Prevegen4U · 09/01/2020 06:28

If you had issues with what Obama was doing while he was president then it was said, you were a racist. I'm so sick and tired of it.
