Racism

Does anyone agree with the continuing claims particularly amongst a lot of celebrities claim that the uk is fundamentally racist particularly in relations to Meghan-Markle.

I think as a country she was welcomed with open arms.

I don’t know much about Afua Hirsch but being raised in Wimbledon and educated in Oxford as a black person (or mixed race?) doesn’t mean she doesn’t experience racism does it?

And what does her being beautiful have to do with anything? Does that make her more acceptable?

Sharpandshineyteeth · 16/01/2020 11:06

Of course we are racist. Unless you believe white people are born with an edge and are more capable, because how else would you explain the lack of BAME in top jobs and the lack of opportunity to then. Look at the statistics.

" I find her false and affected" the fact that you don't understand that this comment is down to racism is ridiculous. What is affected about her? How does her behaviour differ so massively from the other royals?

But we aren't talking about the other royals, we are talking about MM. Do I have to provide analysis of every royal and my unflattering opinion of them alongside to prove my opinion of MM is not racist? This really worries me. "You're racist because I say you are and you don't even know you're being so it's up to me to decide it for you".

I reject that completely.

I don’t understand this “other royals do the same and don’t get criticised for it”, it constantly gets said. Unless people are clones of each other, no they don’t.
In a way it’s a kind of paranoia, a determination to believe that racism is at the heart of it. Nobody ever said about Sarah Ferguson when she was constantly and often vehemently criticised, “Why isn’t Diana criticised for the same thing”

They’ve all had their fair share of criticism, and rightly so when they live lavish lives off the taxpayer. Princess Margaret was very unpopular, if we had social media in her day she’d be torn apart, mainly for her entitled, spoilt, grasping persona. Would people say then, “well the queen does exactly the same, no one says it about her”........Probably not, because they’re two different people, one rubbed people up the wrong way, one didn’t. The queen and Margaret were like chalk and cheese, so too are Meghan and Kate. We aren’t going to have identical opinions of them.

Most people loved Meghan when she first came on the scene. For the majority of people who dislike her, her race is irrelevant.

happyandsingle · 16/01/2020 11:25

My friend is dating a black man.she is white. All the nasty comments/stares have been from other black women. So I guess we need to acknowledge racism is not always one sided.

SoVeryLost · 16/01/2020 12:37

@RunningAwaywiththeCircus with that in mind 14 million voted for a racist. Interesting how you didn’t highlight that. It shows just how racist this country is.

SoVeryLost · 16/01/2020 12:41

@WendyMoiraAngelaDarling it is important as are you also commenting on other royals or does only the Duchess of Sussex deserve your wrath. Which is racist... either judge all by the same bar or accept people will view your hypocrisy as racism.

1forsorrow · 16/01/2020 12:48

Princess Margaret was very unpopular, if we had social media in her day she’d be torn apart, mainly for her entitled, spoilt, grasping persona Maybe I'm older than you but I remember alot of sympathy for her when she couldn't marry Group Captain Townsend and alot of people wishing her well when she got married and her children were born. For a time she and Lord Snowden were seen as quite a golden glamorous couple. She got bad publicity later in life.

bluebells100 · 16/01/2020 12:56

Iforsorrow I agree, there was quite a lot of sympathy. I think in those days people were more besotted with the royals and put them on a pedestal. I always remember my mum saying at the time, “she knows which side her breads buttered”, meaning she loved him but not enough to give up her royal status and all the privilege that went with it. I think she had a lot of pressure, it wasn't just her wanting her Royal status although that was obviously part of it. Her mother was very bitter about the abdication and put pressure on her, she saw her uncle who was an exile and probably didn't want the same and who could blame her.

Justneedatemporaryname · 16/01/2020 13:00

Diane Abbott misspoke in an interview. Something many male MPs have done. To use this to tar her as "absolutely useless" denigrates all her achievements.

Exactly. Boris comes across as the thickest person I have ever seen, yet he is idolised Hmm I can imagine how Britain would react to a black version of him.

bluebells100 · 16/01/2020 13:01

Soverylost like I said in my post above, we never did that with any other royals, ( including them all in the same criticism.)All of them have had their fair share, some more deserving than others, they’re all different. Stop looking for racism behind every remark.

easyandy101 · 16/01/2020 13:04

But really

I don't like Dianne Abbott much and i think boris is an utter fucking moron. I'd have all but a couple of politicians up against the wall along with the royal family

But yeah criticism of a black royal or politician definitely comes from a racist place

having to qualify every fucking thing you say is ridiculous

bluebells100 · 16/01/2020 13:05

Not as Boris, but I’d love a black prime minister, someone who wasn’t born with a silver spoon. We can only dream.

BolloxtoGender · 16/01/2020 13:14

As a BAME, POC, no I do not agree that UK is fundamentally racist. There are racists and racist incidents and hate crime, and I have been at the receiving end of these, but on balance it is not a racist, bigotted country.

I didn't even know Meghan is 'black' when I first knew of her, I just thought she's a brunette, I was colour blind, but people seem very willing to see this as a race issue.

BolloxtoGender · 16/01/2020 13:17

That's what I think is wrong with all this identity/grievance politics and weaponising perceived/claimed victimhood.

^this

I don’t think any of this is about creating a fairer or more equal society. This is about pitching one group against another. It’s not going to lead anywhere good. Can’t people see this?

Highonpotandused · 16/01/2020 13:43

Some choice names from the article I linked:

'Phrases included “self-loathing race traitor”, “trailer trash”, “meghan the queen, of monkey island”, “the woke Meghan bint” and “poisonous cow”. Markle was also described as a “b*h”, “c*t”, “w*e”, “slt” and “witch”'

SamanthaBrique · 16/01/2020 14:11

The now-common use of "woke" as an insult is one of the great victories of the right...

WendyMoiraAngelaDarling · 16/01/2020 14:28

it is important as are you also commenting on other royals or does only the Duchess of Sussex deserve your wrath. Which is racist... either judge all by the same bar or accept people will view your hypocrisy as racism

Again...this thread was about MM. In order to prove my non-racist credentials must I also make a strict point of commenting on other royals negatively at the same time as any comment about MM even though we weren't discussing them? You appear to be saying if I don't do that then whatever I say must be racist.
