Would you date someone who had a coldsore in the past?

YABU - no
YANBU - yes

Not talking an active one and a date right now, just someone that gets them, maybe just one coldsore (so Herpes), a year, 2 years, 5 years ago!

And yes I have another thread to those who have read it. Just wanting a poll, thanks.

Yes, but obviously no kissing with an active cold sore.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 05/01/2020 12:23

My mum gets them and she’s been married over 30 years.

My DD5 gets them. It makes me sad that you would categorise her as undateable (when she’s grown up obviously) because of that.

Minky35 · 05/01/2020 12:23

Bloody hell - is this an actual thing now?

PPopsicle · 05/01/2020 12:23

@LuluJakey1

On the basis over half of people who have herpes (either strain) have no idea, then I think your questioning system is slightly flawed

LuluJakey1 · 05/01/2020 12:23

Along with do they disinfect their mugs and glasses.

Palavah · 05/01/2020 12:24

@Onewardsup I suspect the voting is because people have voted YABU for even asking. How bizarre.

Onewardsup · 05/01/2020 12:25

Sacha, is it Herpes though. I have it.

FEEL interesting, so the strain that gives a coldsore on the lips is fine (despite being passed to the genitals during oral sex), and the strain on the genitals isn’t (despite also showing up on the lips)? Why? Same symptoms, different location.

SerenDippitty · 05/01/2020 12:27

Yes I would. Though neither DH nor I have ever had one.

nowayhose · 05/01/2020 12:29

How the hell would you even know ?

I can see the first date conversation you might have.................

Hi, my names One, what's yours ?

My names BOB, nice to meet you.

Have you ever had a cold sore ?

Eh ? What ? I dunno, why ?

Cos if you have then I'm off !

LOL,LOL

TheDeep · 05/01/2020 12:29

I would and I have had them since childhood although I've not had one for a few years now.

Drum2018 · 05/01/2020 12:29

@Onewardsup I'm guessing it you who get cold sores and are concerned about potential partners being bothered by it?

Dh gets one a couple of times a year. Doesn't bother me. I've never caught them as he doesn't kiss me or the kids when he has one. So don't let it worry you. Lots of people get cold sores. There are plenty of over the counter remedies to help when they do appear.

IckyIsAFuckingStupidWord · 05/01/2020 12:31

I get them and have done since I was a child.

What are you suggesting??

mrsbyers · 05/01/2020 12:32

There needs to be a specialised dating site for people who haven’t ever had cold sores and those who are bothered by that

Coughy4u · 05/01/2020 12:38

Theres been an op who keeps posting about genital herpes making her undateable.

Cold sores are incredibaly common and some carriers dont break out beyond the first sore. Some people get them as CHILDREN.

The important thing is not to give oral sex when you have it.

Zaphodsotherhead · 05/01/2020 12:39

I don't carry the virus but it wouldn't put me off dating someone who did.

Cohle · 05/01/2020 12:39

According to the World Health Organisation two thirds of the the global population under 50 are infected with the virus that causes cold sores. So you'd really be narrowing your dating options if you wouldn't. Many people are entirely asymptomatic and don't even know they have the virus.

Coughy4u · 05/01/2020 12:40

You really are obsessing about this op. Get some help!

Gardai · 05/01/2020 12:41

Do you ask this after you’ve done a thorough STD check and financial spreadsheet OP ?

Threebagsfull730 · 05/01/2020 12:41

I'm assuming this is the user who has recently found out she has herpes and is struggling with the diagnosis. She has had health professionals tell her it is nothing to worry about because it's just like having a cold sore.

Personally, I would never date someone with herpes. I wouldn't want to feel the pain of the initial outbreak, or have to worry about repeat outbreaks, or have to tell someone I'm interested in that I have it. I have seen friends be rejected over it and have to use special dating websites for people with STIs and it isn't something I would want for myself!

A coldsore I wouldn't mind at all though. I've never had one but it's not something that is bothersome and painful like herpes. It isn't an STI.

Just my opinion

DanielRicciardosSmile · 05/01/2020 12:41

@LuluJakey1 do you have them fill in a 10-page questionnaire as well?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 05/01/2020 12:43

I get really, really bad ones - usually once or twice a year. My husband hasn't caught the virus from me, and neither have my children.

I don't kiss anyone when I have a sore, though. And I certainly would throughly wash my hands before I picked up a baby, just in case I'd inadvertently caught my mouth.

It's just common sense really.

Spidey66 · 05/01/2020 12:44

I've been married for 25 years. My husband gets them. I never have. So yes of course I would.

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 05/01/2020 12:44

What the actual fuck?

What planet are you on? The majority of the population get coldsores!

whiplashy · 05/01/2020 12:44

OP stop obsessing about your herpes, it’s weird

Genevieva · 05/01/2020 12:45

It is estimated that up to 90% of the population have been exposed to the herpes simplex virus by the age of 50. Some of those will get cold sores. Others might have had a cold sore once, after which they have never had repeat symptoms. The chances are they don't even know they have been exposed to it. Most of us have had chickenpox, which is a close relative of herpes simplex.
