YABU - no
YANBU - yes

Not talking an active one and a date right now, just someone that gets them, maybe just one coldsore (so Herpes), a year, 2 years, 5 years ago!

And yes I have another thread to those who have read it. Just wanting a poll, thanks.

@Pritchyx

Ah...is this why I was seemingly immune to chicken pox when all my siblings had it and then half my class and later in life, all my kids?

Because I already get cold sores?
Or am I talking nonsense ?

Pritchyx · 07/01/2020 12:55

@fagash i’m not entirely sure, I’ve never had cold sores or chickenpox. It could be that you’ve got an immunity to herpes or are a carrier of chickenpox if you’ve never had it. But you’ve likely got a dormant gene/virus hence why you get cold sores but not had chickenpox! If that’s makes any sense?

over50andfab · 07/01/2020 13:21

@FagAsh no, chicken pox and cold sores are caused by different strains of the herpes virus. Just because you do or don’t get one doesn’t mean you will or won’t get any of the others (see my link above re different strains).

Also, just because you were exposed to chicken pox, (or any of the herpes viruses,) and didn’t get it doesn’t mean you are necessarily immune to ever getting it.

Ash39 · 07/01/2020 14:20

Cold sores are caused by the herpes virus.
Chicken pox is varicella zoster. Both completely different and not linked

I am a dentist. Today alone we had three patients with cold sores. It's common and very prevalent. When they are open wounds/weeping I send them home. When they are crusty/scabbing over I'm happy to treat usually. I deal with them every day. It's just a part of life.

dementedpixie · 07/01/2020 14:28

Varicella is also a herpes virus. Herpes zoster is also known as shingles which is the reactivation of chicken pox. Having one herpes type does not preclude you from getting a different one

over50andfab · 07/01/2020 14:45

@Ash39 yes they are different, but they are linked in that they are different strains of the same (same) herpes virus.

As I don't know where you live, how about this link from the WHO? www.who.int/ith/diseases/varicella/en/

As demented said, having one strain does not preclude anyone from getting another. Interestingly, you can get chicken pox from someone with shingles, but not vice versa. This is because it is the same strain, but can cause 2 different illnesses.

Onewardsup · 07/01/2020 14:49

I think shingles is a reactivation of the chicken pox virus? So you can’t get chicken pox again, but if you are run down can get it as shingles, which is why it is self limiting not contagious.

Like HDV 1 & 2 the chicken pox herpes lies dormant in the nerve endings and comes out again as shingles.

Onewardsup · 07/01/2020 14:51

*HSV

So that’s why shingles causes chicken pox in someone not already immune, but you can’t get shingles until you’ve had chicken pox as it reactivates in you.

Herpes is a little fucker isn’t it?

So in the other thread, you confirmed that you take suppressants even though you clearly said on this thread that you don't take them.

I think this is a bit similar to how you started this thread asking one thing, but really, you were asking another thing. Lots of Apps are saying they are a bit confused about this in their answers and in their votes.

I think if you want honest and realistic answers that you can count on, it would be better to be clear with people about what you're asking, and what your own situation is.

You have genital herpes and you are taking suppressants. You want to know from MN if we would date someone with genital herpes or oral herpes and if not, why not? Your underlying question is to get at the hypocrisy of saying no to one and yes to the other?

I think suppressants are important. I would date someone with genital herpes who either took suppressants or had very few outbreaks and was very conscious of them and protective of me.

I would expect that with oral herpes, it's so common that I would not know, expect, or ask about it before kissing someone. I hope I would only be kissing people with the decency not to kiss others when they felt an attack coming on, or if they had one. I would accept I might be unlucky.

Apps -> PP's (obvi). Sorry, fat fingers.

over50andfab · 07/01/2020 16:41

agonieauntie you are coming across as a bit goady in some of your posts, whether it is your intention to or not.

I think these threads have indeed given the OP the answers she is looking for. As for the suppressants question confusion, the OP has already answered this.

moonsmarshmellow · 07/01/2020 16:44

The problem with genital herpes is that most people who have it don’t actually realise, and it’s not generally or routinely tested for over here. If you go for a ‘full STD screening’ on the nhs it does not include herpes- so people infected with it will still come out with all-clear if they don’t have anything else. So it’s as straightforward to say ‘I would never date someone with it’ because you’ll only get to make that decision with the smaller minority of people who actually know they have it, there’s always a risk that any partner could be unknowingly infected.

Onewardsup · 07/01/2020 21:33

True Moons which makes me wish they’d never tested for something that I may never have known about. One of my follow clinic follow up drs seemed pissed off that they had. But I can’t roll back time.
