YABU - no
YANBU - yes

Not talking an active one and a date right now, just someone that gets them, maybe just one coldsore (so Herpes), a year, 2 years, 5 years ago!

And yes I have another thread to those who have read it. Just wanting a poll, thanks.

Those are interesting stats in the BMJ. Looks like the rates here are actually much lower than many people are quoting here, particularly for genital herpes.

Mgr1603 · 06/01/2020 18:43

I get them, sometimes a few times a year, so yes i would date someone who gets them, its not our fault. Its just life

Iatetoomuchchocolate · 06/01/2020 18:44

I’m so sorry for what you went through OP Flowers

I hope you can find peace.

It doesn’t define you Flowers

MarkingTimeIm59 · 06/01/2020 18:44

I currently have a coldsore. The side effect of a rotten cold.
Am I unclean?

Floofffs · 06/01/2020 18:48

I get them, I've just made sure I've not kissed when I have an outbreak

They are old now and haven't even had one

M2B19 · 06/01/2020 18:55

Not ever did it cross my mind, whilst single, to screen potential love interests for cold sores. How bizarre. My husband gets them. About once a year. We have been together almost 13 years and I have never contracted it.

Sissyjd · 06/01/2020 18:55

Children get coldsores!! Ffs thats not from oral sex is it!! Jeez!! Arrgghh

Mummadeeze · 06/01/2020 18:56

OP - not sure if this is helpful but I caught genital herpes from someone with a cold sore via oral sex in my early 20s. Was a bit devastated at the time but have had regular sex with my current partner for 14 years and he has not contracted it and I have only had one additional outbreak in all that time. I have almost forgotten I have it to be honest. Sorry to hear about your experience though.

nzginge86 · 06/01/2020 19:09

According to the World Health Organization, 3.7 billion people under age 50 have herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) — that's 67 percent of the global population in that age bracket.
Slim pickings!

Bettybeautiful28 · 06/01/2020 19:37

Have you looked at lysine? You can get it in Holland and Barrett and it prevents cold sores I think. It is also possible to get something on prescription that prevents cold sores and may stop you getting them in the future. Maybe speak to your Gp. It might give you some peace of mind. Also you can avoid sex if you have an outbreak. Don’t be hard on yourself op. You are not damaged/undateable because of this.

ktp100 · 06/01/2020 19:43

I'm sorry but you can't look at coldsores on people's faces and automatically assume they've been spread from genital herpes!! I know they CAN be but it's an enormous stretch! Literally millions of people get facial coldsores when rundown & WITHOUT ever having the genital herpes virus.

Emma123batmab · 06/01/2020 19:44

@Onewardsup
Yes you can get L-Lysiene to take daily. Order of amazon as B&B expensive. The doctor can also prescribe acyclovir for reoccurring or a bad outbreak.

dementedpixie · 06/01/2020 19:45

Nobody is saying they assume that at all. It's still the herpes virus wherever it appears

frumpety · 06/01/2020 19:46

It basically comes down to judging someone for being a human being.

Anyone on here who has never had any kind of sexual contact with another human, be it kissing or full blown sexual intercourse or anything in between, you may possibly have the higher moral ground. Or you could be a total twat in so many other ways Smile

Itsjustmee · 06/01/2020 19:47

If you take Avviclore tablets they can suppress the virus
My sister takes one every other day or so and has done for years on and off
When she doesn’t take them for a few month she is ok but if she gets run down or gets a cold she generally gets a the tingling signalling the beginning of a cold sore but she then takes the tablets 2 a day for 5 days and it stops the
coldsore from breaking out

LisaD76 · 06/01/2020 19:47

You do realise that it is the same virus that causes chickenpox? I have suffered for years on and off and no-one has ever caught one from me.... strangely the only one of my family to suffer from them and the only one of my mums progeny who is completely immune to chickenpox

LisaD76 · 06/01/2020 19:50

Mummadeez.... it would not be genital herpes if it was a normal cold sore as they are two different viruses if it was genital herpes then they had genital herpes on their lips just as you can get normal herpes on your genitals

whitechocolatespaceegg · 06/01/2020 19:57

Hi. I got genital herpes from an ex partner. He got cold sores and transferred the virus to me before it had broken out. I never got it again or had an oral cold sore despite being together for 9 years.
It's unlikely to happen again as this happened in 1997. I've had a couple of occasions where I've worried about it reoccurring but it's proved not to be the case when I've been to the GUM clinic. One of the nurses really helped me when she said that it's horrible once you've had it as worrying about a recurrence is really common.
I'm sorry you're going through this and hope you're getting good support.

jwpetal · 06/01/2020 20:04

my husband gets them every time we go some place sunny, which is a shame as my home country is very sunny.

bobstersmum · 06/01/2020 20:06

Lol at heroes virus!
This thread is bonkers.
Would you date someone who once had a cold sore. Heard it all now.

GuidoTheKillerPimp · 06/01/2020 20:06

WTAF?

anon2000000000 · 06/01/2020 20:09

Married someone who gets cold sores.

I've never had one.

FagAsh · 06/01/2020 20:09

OP has a point and I've often wondered this being blessed with coldsores myself.

However I haven't had a proper cold sore in over ten years. Used to get 1 a month.

So for any fellow lepers reading this, buy some Iodine and put some on at the first sign. It. Won't even erupt!

Sometimes when I'm a bit run down I smear some around my mouth before I go to bed.

{Iodine is an antiviral
Don't do this if you have any thyroid issues either...}

Onewardsup · 06/01/2020 20:20

Sorry struggling to catch up but yes of course I would date someone with it, I have it already Confused

Would I have before knowing what I know? I honestly don’t know what my initial reaction would have been, but I think the same moral compass and questioning mind would have made me look into it and realise what I know now, that the chances are as Ex had them on his lips I already had them from the lots of oral sex so I would have with someone I liked yes. But hindsight is 20:20,

Bob it is the herpes virus, one just likes hanging around down below, one above, but both are transferable and can go anywhere including arms, backs, anywhere really. Same symptoms, so the place I’m in is just that the “stigma” of one being on the genitals is the only difference. And that isn’t ok.

And Lisa correct, chickenpox and shingles. And some other stuff I can’t remember. One of the other two interesting things I have learnt on this journey:

  • we are all giving off the Epstein Barr virus from our throat all the time, which is really serious, yet people only rarely get it. Odd
  • Herpes has been round since Archimedes time and was just considered a minor inconvenience. But when the US pharmaceutical companies found there was money to be made from antivirals, that’s when the disgust and hype started. Thanks big pharma.
