Prince George’s outfit

There’s a new royal portrait featuring the queen & her direct heirs. I know they seem to prefer traditional (to the point of twee) clothes for George, but AIBU to find his outfit odd? The shirt & trousers jar for me

A quick google brings up any number of pictures of him dressed in H&M or Uniqlo with Nike trainers on so it’s really a non-issue.

Drizzzle · 04/01/2020 12:34

Does it really matter?

Mummyshark2019 · 04/01/2020 12:36

He looks beautiful and stop slagging off his clothes. Leave the child alone.

CallaLilli · 04/01/2020 12:43

And why are people criticising the way the photograph is staged? It is a formal Royal one and fit for purpose.

They're criticising it because it's poorly composed for a professional photograph, even more so of you compare it to previous photos of the royal family. I guess Chris Jackson wasn't available...

Fozzleyplum · 04/01/2020 12:47

It's a formal portrait of 4 generations of the line of succession. It will be seen as an historical record, much as portraits of monarchs have been for centuries. In that context, the question of whether or not the clothing is a bit anachronistic for the 21st century, becomes a bit of a non-issue.

Plus, I suspect they want to keep George's "on duty" appearance as far removed as feasible from the way he dresses when he is not on display.

angelikacpickles · 04/01/2020 12:51

@HowsAnnie

I think he looks adorable. He'd look weird dressed in trackies with a gold chain.

Yes, because that would be the only other option. Hmm

MarySidney · 04/01/2020 12:54

He would have looked far nicer in some kind of normal suit

Well, that's a matter of opinion. I really don't like seeing little boys dressed like mini adults in business suits.

And I think the shirt needed to be white, otherwise he'd have been a bit lost against the background.

DickDewy · 04/01/2020 12:56

He'd look weird dressed in trackies with a gold chain.

This is so stupid. No-one is suggesting this. Lots of people think his piped blouse is prissy and ridiculous. That is all.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 04/01/2020 13:00

Stand them all in a group on one level and Prince William would be towering over the lot of them.

I wish it had been done in height order, like a little royal set of matrushka dolls Grin

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 04/01/2020 13:01

I think he looks just right for a small boy with such a destiny before him. He is smart without being over-dressed, as a child should be for a family portrait. I'd rather have this than see him in scruffy 'superhero' outfits, or jeans and t-shirt, or a suit at his age. Remember, this is a photo which will go down in history.

Cremebrule · 04/01/2020 13:07

I think it must be much harder to pull off the traditional look for the royal boys. The girls can wear all sorts of dresses and look fine but George’s shirt does seem quite dated compared to most children . It looks ok in the portrait because of the nature of what it is but it is a more unusual style. There are plenty of people that have seen the children in more normal clothes though and it probably becomes a bit of a uniform.

PetraRabbit · 04/01/2020 13:15

I usually love the traditional style but this particular outfit is not very well selected- the shirt doesn't fit him very well. He always wears the white shirt with trim for portraits so although a dark green shirt would have looked better, they probably wanted continuity. I think next year he'll lose the peter pan collars due to his age.
I don't think it matters as long as he looks smart and formal.

Whilst I agree they are hardly going to put him out there in an Asda 'Here Comes Trouble' t-shirt, I do think that as he gets older they could start to modernise his clothes a little. Not his fault though.

What I can't believe is how old William looks - he is the same age as me! How can someone with that pampered a life be aging so badly?!

zoobincan · 04/01/2020 13:31

What I do find weird is Louis' Trooping the Colour outfit was Harry's. Yes he was in his Uncles baby clothes.

It was actually Williams outfit. Harry wore it after William.

namechangetheworld · 04/01/2020 13:32

I love traditional clothes and my girls often have a Peter Pan collar on for more formal occasions, but this shirt is ill fitting and an odd design. The trousers are gorgeous though.

And for those bleating "He's just a child, stop slagging him off!', give it a rest. The criticism is clearly aimed at the people dressing him. I doubt he'll be allowed to choose his own clothes until he's at least 4018.

SF1269 · 04/01/2020 13:46

He looks adorable.

dottiedodah · 04/01/2020 14:01

I love the Tartan Trousers! makes him look all grown up!

Blackbear19 · 04/01/2020 14:05

That's even more weird. It's not as if the Royals are skint.

Re George I think it's tough trying to make him look a child, not a mini boss but aiming for a classic won't date type of picture. Give it a few years and he'll be in a shirt and waistcoat.

ginghamtablecloths · 04/01/2020 14:12

They are so terribly old fashioned and always have been.

Michelleoftheresistance · 04/01/2020 14:58

They're under constant fire about money; you can't blame them for trying to demonstrate to the general public that they do keep and re use what will be very good quality children's clothes the way many families do.

Sockwomble · 04/01/2020 15:31

I think the trousers are fine for a formal picture but I don't think the shirt goes with them. A plain white shirt without the peter pan collar would have looked better. He is a cute lad though.

misspiggy19 · 04/01/2020 15:37

The trousers are awful

my2bundles · 04/01/2020 15:43

It's an official photo of the heirs to the throne. There are plenty of photos of him in jeans etc. This photo will be archived for historic reference. It's an official photo not a family snap, there's a difference.

alexdgr8 · 04/01/2020 15:56

I thought the trousers looked crumpled, or too long, not neatly fitting.
I think well-fitted short trousers, to the knee almost, worn with long dark socks is very becoming, looks good.
what does he looks like a big jessie mean.
there seems to be some incipient sexism on here. the shirt is deemed to be a girlish blouse and therefore a great indignity, to be mocked. look at all the assumptions in that.

beware creeping toxic masculinity, surely we've had too much of that.
how very narrow-minded. all this is relative and very temporary, re times and places. also isn't his main nanny Spanish, maybe they have those styles there. I think it looks quite classic, which is what is wanted in such a portrait.
