Prince George’s outfit

There’s a new royal portrait featuring the queen & her direct heirs. I know they seem to prefer traditional (to the point of twee) clothes for George, but AIBU to find his outfit odd? The shirt & trousers jar for me

*lav, not lab, buggerit!

astralweaks · 04/01/2020 11:29

I love the way those advocating tracksuit bottoms presume to know better...

astralweaks · 04/01/2020 11:32

And why are people criticising the way the photograph is staged? It is a formal Royal one and fit for purpose.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 04/01/2020 11:32

Shoes were Navy buckle

Many years ago, my DS (roughly the same age as Prince William, asked "Why do they wear girls' shoes?" because every picture of the princes showed them in buckle sandals which by our reckoning was very old-fashioned traditional.

(And before anyone kicks off,I am not saying that buckle sandals have to be worn by girls, or that girls can't wear trainers etc etc etc, so please don't start)

dayswithaY · 04/01/2020 11:33

Didn't Liz Hurley used to dress her kid like that?

TheFaerieQueene · 04/01/2020 11:33

Whilst I think the clothes don’t look very neat and perhaps a little mismatched in style, I think it is better for a little boy than him wearing a suit or similar adult clothing. I find that look much more jarring.

NewMe2020 · 04/01/2020 11:34

And Prince George looks huuuuge. Why does he look nearly as big as the Queen?

DickDewy · 04/01/2020 11:34

Has anyone actually suggested tracksuit bottoms? Of course not.

But it would be more relatable if they dressed him like a normal boy in smart clothes, and not in a prissy blouse.

astralweaks · 04/01/2020 11:35

I noticed it was the same outfits the family had worn to make the Christmas puddings.

Same day.

diddl · 04/01/2020 11:37

"And Prince George looks huuuuge. Why does he look nearly as big as the Queen?"

Because he's standing a step up from HM?

Peregrina · 04/01/2020 11:37

I don't think anyone has advocated tracksuit bottoms - just the normal sort of clothes that any six year old boy would wear for a smart occasion i.e. plain trousers with a white or possibly blue shirt and a tie.

Not Rupert the Bear trousers with a blouse.

chocolicious · 04/01/2020 11:39

The Black Watch trousers are fine( one of my favourite tartans).
I don’t like the shirt. The piping is awful, and not for a boy of his age. A plain shirt would be better.

astralweaks · 04/01/2020 11:41

To deny Prince George is constitutionally more important than his siblings or any other Royal child of his generation, is just plain silly, incidentally.

Peregrina · 04/01/2020 11:41

Yes, he could have had a Black Watch tie to match and that would have not made the trousers looks so ridiculous.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 04/01/2020 11:42

I think the queen might have fished the tartan trews out of the hidden recesses of the communal Balmoral-attire kilt trunk, stuffed them in her handbag to take to the photoshoot and then presented them to poor Prince George who thought he was going to get away with wearing civvies.

How else do you account for their suspiciously rumpled appearance?

astralweaks · 04/01/2020 11:42

A shirt and tie on a 6 year old?! Confused

TheGirlFromStoryville · 04/01/2020 11:42

The PR tacti. of showing pictures of just the immediate line of succession annoys me immensely. Anything to distract the masses from the PA scandal.

Peregrina · 04/01/2020 11:43

Perhaps then, all the more reason to let him dress like an ordinary boy while he is still young - as the Queen did with Prince Charles.

Peregrina · 04/01/2020 11:43

What does he wear for school, if not a shirt and tie?

FoamingAtTheUterus · 04/01/2020 11:53

The shirt doesn't go. It doesn't fit right and looks too small.......It would look better with a navy or green jumper over it. to hide the hideous thing I liked the trousers tho.

MrsToothyBitch · 04/01/2020 11:54

George doesn't look v tidily put together & I'm not overly fond of the piped shirt but it's not that bad. If you dissect the outfit it makes sense as a choice.

I think he's in trousers now because he's about 6.5 yo and getting quite tall! He's too young for them to put him in a suit, I think, and I can't see them letting him wear a shirt & tie with no jacket. I know Kate has a bit of a thing for piped shirts anyway but if he had a plain white shirt on for the photo he'd have no colour next to his face - not ideal for photos. Piped edges do the trick. Personally I'd have put him in a v neck jumper but perhaps that looked a bit school uniform-y?

100 years ago he'd have been in a short-suit with eton collar type affair or probably a sailor suit. I'm surprised Kate hasn't pushed a sailor suit on one of the boys actually!

senua · 04/01/2020 12:04

Notice how Charles has got a hand on his shoulder to hold him still? Judging by the mischievous smile, I think that George had been up to all sorts of high jinks that day which resulted in rumpledness.Smile

Michelleoftheresistance · 04/01/2020 12:06

They've all been peculiarly positioned to try and disguise the height differences, which is such an odd visual affect that they could have been wearing swimming gear and I wouldn't have noticed. My first thought was that the Queen looked the same height as Prince George - and then I realised how far back they had stood Prince William to get his head height the same as his father's, and that Prince George was up on a box, and thought ohhhhhh. Stand them all in a group on one level and Prince William would be towering over the lot of them.

OhTheRoses · 04/01/2020 12:07

For all we know they might have had a better shirt to hand and he might have had a strop over getting changed because he was disturbed from playing with his cousins, etc, or had already spilt something down it.

I agree it's a bit prissy and could have been better chosen.

ooooohbetty · 04/01/2020 12:23

He's a little boy. Talking about how dreadful he looks is horrible.
