Prince George’s outfit

There’s a new royal portrait featuring the queen & her direct heirs. I know they seem to prefer traditional (to the point of twee) clothes for George, but AIBU to find his outfit odd? The shirt & trousers jar for me

I hadn’t realised how tall the Royal family are. Prince William is 6’3” and the Queen (who I’d always thought was tiny) is 5’4” (but may have shrunk a bit now).

Realistically no matter what he wore, they would still be criticised. A poster a while back said she had “curated” her child’s wardrobe and bedroom decorations and was really laid into here. The Royal family are meant to be above “curating” things for their children (although I should think Prince George’s mum would probably be very good at that sort of thing).

FarTooSkinny · 04/01/2020 16:56

The Queen keeps a revolver in her handbag, ready to pistol whip anyone who steps out of line. Apparently she has already threatened to shoot Boris at point blank range

Amanduh · 04/01/2020 17:00

I think he looks gorgeous. Love a peter pan collar. Rather see him in that than a tracksuit. The Cambridge children are a handsome bunch

Amanduh · 04/01/2020 17:05

Prissy, a big jessie, mimsy, looking fat, and a twerp. What a delightful thread about a 6 year old.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 04/01/2020 17:08

the shirt is deemed to be a girlish blouse and therefore a great indignity, to be mocked. look at all the assumptions in that.

Not at all. But no one should be forced or encouraged to wear something they are u comfortable in. Don't think he looks particularly comfortable and part of your job as a parent is to provide experiences/clothing etc that allow your child to feel comfortable and fit in as they wish. My DS would not feel comfortable wearing a dress to a party. That's fine and doesnt mean there is anything wrong with a dress. One DD likes wearing trousers, the other doesn't. That doesn't mean she is inherintly sexist

youwereagoodcakeclyde · 04/01/2020 17:11

He’s in long trousers! I don’t love the shirt but not bothered generally by the twee. I think the handbag is part of her outfit and fine.

zoobincan · 04/01/2020 17:13

That's even more weird. It's not as if the Royals are skint.

So you think they should wear it once and bin it? Rather than pass it on? I know lots of people who have clothes from their own childhoods that their children now wear/have worn. It's not about money Confused

cordelia16 · 04/01/2020 17:18

Given how pale his skin is, perhaps a non-white shirt would have looked better. I love the trousers, and think he is adorable no matter what he wears.

Flicketyflack · 04/01/2020 17:18

This is all to distract from Duke of York debacle Grin

The pic of them 'making' the pudding and now the generational photo.

Nonsense Angry

Peregrina · 04/01/2020 17:20

But Prince Louis smocked outfit was old fashioned even when William and Harry wore it in the 1980s. It's just about the sort of outfit you could have got away with early 1950s.

Peregrina · 04/01/2020 17:32

You must admit though that 'making' a pudding wearing suits for the adult men, and carrying one's handbag for the Queen, is a bit odd.

mencken · 04/01/2020 17:36

I would think that the one advantage of being queen is that you have staff to carry things about, or could get your clothes made with pockets so no need to have an annoying handbag!

as probably mentioned, theory is that the kids are dressed like it is the 1950s for photos, and normally the rest of the time to give them some chance of blending in. I doubt they actually go out like that.

poor example but that's why Michael Jackson had his kids masked when they were with him, so no-one knew what they looked like when they weren't with him.

peridito · 04/01/2020 18:05

Does anyone have any hiostorical detail on how Peter Pan collars came to be an upper class thing ?

BertrandRussell · 04/01/2020 18:10

I reckon this picture is actually a still from the latest Dr Who. It is how shape shifting aliens who have never seen a royal think they look.

olivertwistwantsmore · 04/01/2020 18:27

@PineappleDanish - George is standing a step higher than the queen!

Hepsibar · 04/01/2020 18:34

Who cares, he's just a little boy with his family. So sad the only relevance they seem to have is what they are wearing.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 04/01/2020 18:50

Maybe the Queen is actually Moominmamma :).

demelza82 · 04/01/2020 18:55

Oh my word, it is literally the least offensive/remarkable outfit I've ever seen. That's 10 seconds of my life I'm never getting back. YABU obviously - maybe get a hobby instead

astralweaks · 04/01/2020 19:00

Exactly. Still, it entertains some, clearly.

astralweaks · 04/01/2020 19:04

The pudding “making” was obviously just ceremonial - lol - so obviously wearing a suit, a Peter Pan collar or carrying an expensive handbag wasn’t really going to make a whole lot of difference.

CallaLilli · 04/01/2020 19:12

Well yes, people are aware of that but it's amusing that the royals don't even bother making it look realistic. No doubt it's all just an attempt to detract from Andrew's antics anyway.

astralweaks · 04/01/2020 19:23

You do not have to make ceremonial “realistic”. By definition, it is not the same. The Royals are not makers of pudding.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 04/01/2020 19:29

To all those making jokes about the Queen's handbag, does it ever occur to you that she just needs something to do with her hands? If she did not carry a bag, what could she do with her hands? Behind her back, clasped in front, hanging loosely at her side? It's a prop and good for her that she still does what SHE wants to do.

hopefulhalf · 04/01/2020 19:49

Handing things down isn't just about thrift. DCs wore things that had been used by me or DH. I love seeing my DNs wearing things I choose with love and care for DD

CallaLilli · 04/01/2020 20:18

The Royals are not makers of pudding.

Not usually but in this case the text accompanying the photos stated that they'd prepared the puddings.
