I quite like Nicola Sturgeon, and I'm not keen on Jo Swinson. But Nicola S's rejoicing over Swinson's defeat - AIBU to find it unpleasant and embarrassingly over-the-top?

Am I being unreasonable?

Diane Abbott’s “get in” was also horrible

Wasn’t rejoicing at a defeat, was celebrating that her candidate won.

Report

Clawdy · 14/12/2019 14:40

It was still over-the-top.

Not really. Politics is insanely competitive and it was a very close victory. What level of happiness would you think OK? Small nod of the head? You can bet your life the Lib Dems would have done the same if they’d held the seat.

Yes it was highly distasteful. She has apologised but it was quite sickening to watch

YABU

She was celebrating a win for her party. I think she acted like everyone would (she was watching on a screen, not standing in front of her).

She was celebrating that her party, and a candidate who is apparently a good friend of hers, had won a seat. Nothing to do with who lost.

I thought NS was playing to the camera.

She was delighted that her party narrowly took the seat 🤷‍♀️ Is she supposed to be less pleased because it was a seat formerly held by the leader of the LDs?

LemonGingerCakes · 14/12/2019 14:49

Did you not hear the cheer from inside Downing Street when Johnson walked in. How dare they celebrate all of the seats that other parties lost. Maybe they should all be made to apologise.

Hmm

There was something cringey about that over-reaction, though. Didn't know she had apologised for it.

Women's behaviour always is far more scrutinised than men's.
Was there a fridge involved?

Didn't see it, so no idea what you are talking about.

Hadn’t seen it so just watched, can’t see how that’s wrong or ott tbh. But maybe politics would/could be more edifying in general if more took the approach of Mark Fletcher, the winner of the Bolsover seat, beating the long standing MP Dennis Skinner. Fletcher paid an absolutely lovely tribute to the outgoing Labour Beast of Bolsover.

Yes she said she got over excited and apologised, I don't think personally, but to the media.

And to the pp that tried to compare this reaction to the round of applause Boris got when entering Downing Street, I suspect you know it's a very different thing, because it wasn't personal in relation to one seat.

SNP took the LDP leader 's seat. That is a big win. Why shouldn't she celebrate.

JudgeRindersMinder · 14/12/2019 17:31

She confirmed to me the kind of person she is

Report

Lolapippin · 14/12/2019 17:33

I think she did it for attention to be honest. Playing up to the camera as a pp said. Was a bit awkward to watch

I’m pretty sure if the shoe had been on the other foot Nippy Nicola would not have been happy about it.

Isn’t it a ‘thing’ that when either a new or returning PM enters No 10 the staff applaud?

Report

Nanalisa60 · 14/12/2019 17:43

Apparently Nicola has apologised for that over the top behaviour!!

Nicolastuffedone · 14/12/2019 17:44

Cacaca you’re right!! Shed have angrily nodded the head off herself if the shoe had been on the other foot!!!

Just the type of behaviour I'd expect from her. Horrible woman

YABVU. I saw various Lib Dem MPs condemning Nicola Sturgeon for her reaction to the SNP candidate winning. Idiots. The Lib Dem's did plenty celebrating with the Tories and Labour when the Indy Ref result came in. Nicola was just channeling most people in Scotland seeing Swinson beat. She's loathed by lots of us. I voted Labour by the way.

Do you think Nicola Sturgeon came in for more criticism because she is female, and we are expected to be demure and gracious? I am no NS fan, but I really can't be too bothered about this. She is a politician, her party won a big scalp (another party's leader!) No wonder she was ecstatic.
