I quite like Nicola Sturgeon, and I'm not keen on Jo Swinson. But Nicola S's rejoicing over Swinson's defeat - AIBU to find it unpleasant and embarrassingly over-the-top?

@churchandstate

Respectfully agree to disagree. I think if a man did it there would be just as much uproar.

umberellaonesie · 15/12/2019 09:36

Man celebrating in exactly the same way.

For a seat he knew he would win despite being a useless MP.
We are upset because a women celebrated another woman's loss. We need to get over it.

IM0GEN · 15/12/2019 09:38

Yes of course women should be ladylike and demure at all times. They are not allowed to celebrate like real politicians.

Otherwise people might infer that they actually care about politics and having power. When everyone knows that women only care about clothes, nail polish and crafting.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 15/12/2019 09:40

I thought it was lovely to see Sturgeon celebrating Amy Callaghan's win. She campaigned really hard, considered local issues and won against an opponent who received vastly more media attention for obvious reasons. No wonder her party leader and friend was over the moon delighted for her.

Shame Jo Swinson couldn't have been a bit more gracious in defeat but I understand her disappointment. Losing your seat as party leader is kind of embarrassing.

crispysausagerolls · 15/12/2019 09:44

@umberellaonesie

Really appreciate you posting this. Thank you! Just as horrible when a man does it!!!

Have to say probably hasn’t been as reported on because he’s a pretty unknown MP vs Diane Abbott or Nicola.

Still not alright either though.

umberellaonesie · 15/12/2019 10:25

@crispysausagerolls He was the former secretary of state for Scotland!!!
Think you might need to acquaint yourself with all of Scotland's MP's. Despite the blue line at the bottom it is still Scotland.

churchandstate · 15/12/2019 10:28

Just as horrible when a man does it!!!

I agree that it’s the same thing, but the reaction is markedly different.

BackInTime · 15/12/2019 10:31

No one would bat an eyelid if it was a man

ssd · 15/12/2019 10:43

@Clawdy, of course they see Johnson as an affable joker, no one takes him seriously but he's treated like a kindly uncle who gets things wrong but everyone laughs.

I'm not fucking laughing.

Clawdy · 15/12/2019 10:47

I'm not laughing either. Think he is showing his true colours now though.

bluebell34567 · 15/12/2019 10:49

she is a divider.

Travis1 · 15/12/2019 10:54

🤣🤣🤣 @bluebell34567 Because boris is really bringing the people together 🧐

crispysausagerolls · 15/12/2019 10:54

@umberellaonesie

Clearly I know absolutely nothing about Scottish politics.

In that case, I absolutely stand corrected and it’s shameful that he has not been in the press like Nicola and Diane. Really shameful!!!!

Bananablueberry · 15/12/2019 12:56

Do we think Boris would've clapped demurely if a Tory candidate beat a rival parties leader?

astralweaks · 15/12/2019 12:59

Sturgeon is allowed to celebrate. The head girl was out on her ear.

astralweaks · 15/12/2019 12:59

I hope that image becomes a meme.

Travis1 · 15/12/2019 18:30

I’m currently out with a family member who worked the count on Thursday night and from what she’s just said about Jo Swinsons attitude she’s got everything she deserved from Nicola Sturgeons reaction.

They’ve had to put everything including name cards into lock boxes because they are expecting her to challenge the result.

Butchyrestingface · 15/12/2019 18:36

They’ve had to put everything including name cards into lock boxes because they are expecting her to challenge the result.

She’s getting some stick on social media for (allegedly) asking for a recount and allegedly losing the heid when the returning officer told her tae get tae.

Now, I dislike Swinson as much as the next person, esp if the next person happens to be Nicola Sturgeon or Diane Abbot, but I can’t anything wrong in asking for a recount given the small numbers.

It would be remiss to do anything otherwise given that she was about to lose her job, her party was about to lose it’s leader and was suffering significant losses in the election. She should have asked for a recount and it should have been granted.

bluebell34567 · 15/12/2019 19:00

agree @Butchyrestingface.

StarsofNarnia · 15/12/2019 19:06

I thought it was fair enough. I felt sorry for Jo Swinson in a way, as I feel sorry for anyone who loses their seat whether I like them or not.

But I felt that Nicola Sturgeon's reaction was proportionate. She and her team have worked very hard for that victory and they should be allowed to celebrate.

Wish I could vote SNP, Nicola Sturgeon seems like the only decent politician whose having any success at the moment.

bluebell34567 · 15/12/2019 19:34

agree @Bananablueberry, Boris never clapped like that. it looks childish a bit and annoying.

tabulahrasa · 15/12/2019 19:51

So... one’s fine, but the other isn’t then?...
