Nicola Sturgeon and Jo Swinson.....

I quite like Nicola Sturgeon, and I'm not keen on Jo Swinson. But Nicola S's rejoicing over Swinson's defeat - AIBU to find it unpleasant and embarrassingly over-the-top?

I think she should have celebrated a bit more. She should have done a lap round the room then jumped into Dianne Abbots's arms.

TheGoldenNotebook · 14/12/2019 18:02

Total misogyny. A man who has used racist, homophobic, misogynistic, and classist language, who has treated women appallingly, and who hid rather than answer difficult questions has just been elected as our Prime Minister. But a woman celebrating her party taking the seat of an opponent is "sickening" and "vile". GET. A. GRIP.

ginghambox · 14/12/2019 18:06

Two no marks doesn't really matter what either did.

HundredMilesAnHour · 14/12/2019 18:08

Do you think Nicola Sturgeon came in for more criticism because she is female, and we are expected to be demure and gracious?

Not at all. A man behaving in the same way as NS did would have been equally unpleasant.

madeyemoodysmum · 14/12/2019 18:09

She confirmed to me the kind of person she is
This

JKScot4 · 14/12/2019 18:10

Unclutch your pearls, this wouldn’t even have drawn attention of it was a man. She was celebrating her candidate narrowly winning her seat; Amy Callaghan the new MP is a 27 yr old cancer survivor who campaigned tirelessly for her seat unlike Swindon who never turned up in the constituency until the count was being announced.
As per, MSM being believed, twisting to their own agenda.

daisypond · 14/12/2019 18:13

I don’t think she did anything wrong. Of course she is going to celebrate the victory of her candidate.

Clymene · 14/12/2019 18:14

Layla is that you?

churchandstate · 14/12/2019 18:14

They won a tightly fought race. Of course they celebrated.

Topseyt · 14/12/2019 18:16

I can't say her reaction bothered me at all. Politics is competitive. It just is. I wouldn't see that as anything out of the ordinary in the heat of the moment.

I saw a celebrating from Conservatives and their teams during election night as they took previously safe Labour seats. Not that I am a Conservative voter.

It's politics. It gets tense, competitive and heated. This happens. Much like football fans when their team wins.

I don't doubt that it felt awful for Jo Swinson, and although I am not a fan of hers at all, I did have a small amount of sympathy.

midnightmisssuki · 14/12/2019 18:16

🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s the election, it’s competitive, did you not realise that?

Ohdeariedear · 14/12/2019 18:23

I’m no Nicola Sturgeon fan but she was celebrating one of her team winning an important and well-targeted seat.

I despise how it’s being framed as bitchy mean girls stuff. But I’m not surprised. Wonder what they would be saying if it was a man being filmed doing the same. Not much probably.

GrumpyHoonMain · 14/12/2019 18:25

There were many male politicians who behaved in the same way even in Scotland. But the media didn’t report on them - they reported on Nicola Sturgeon because she’s female.

MistyCloud · 14/12/2019 18:28

Yeah I saw it as more celebrating her candidate's win. I mean if my friend got a job she was after at a certain place of work, I would cheer for her, but that wouldn't mean I was mocking, or laughing at the ones who didn't get the job.

So I put YABU.

StealthPolarBear · 14/12/2019 18:31

Thought it was completely appropriate and her non apologetic explanation afterwards was genuine. If she has apologised that's a pity, she has nothing to apologise for.

DontMakeMeShushYou · 14/12/2019 18:34

Well, yes, it was perhaps less than gracious but you're a bit behind the times, OP. Nicola Sturgeon has already acknowledged the celebration was over the top and has apologised.

tttigress · 14/12/2019 18:36

It wasn't a good look.

AgeShallNotWitherHer · 14/12/2019 18:36

Diane Abbott was worse as she was not celebrating her party's success but only a defeat of a woman she didn't like. It was horrible. She should be ashamed.

Sturgeon fought that seat for her own party - and won that fight. She celebrated. Over the top - yes - but completely different from DA

RedLipstickHighHeels · 14/12/2019 18:42

Right, let’s get this clear Nicola sturgeon was celebrating a 149vote victory for a new to politics candidate
It wasn’t triumphalistic celebration or schadenfreude.sturgeon is being been misrepresented
Politics is about winning and this was a marginal seat the SNP won

Hohonoshow · 14/12/2019 18:44

Two no marks doesn't really matter what either did
Yeah, the first minister of Scotland is a nonentity Hmm

littlemissrose · 14/12/2019 18:46

Why shouldn't she celebrate? Passions were running high and she won a seat not previously held by the SNP. It wasn't at the expense of the candidate as such, she was just thrilled to have won it.

Mrsjayy · 14/12/2019 18:48

I think Nicola got carried away she has apologised for her ott reaction tbf i think the media expect some sort of reaction and it was a bit much.

RedLipstickHighHeels · 14/12/2019 18:50

Yes can’t have women being a “bit much” can we
Next they’ll be acting up

Fairyliz · 14/12/2019 18:55

Well if she was ‘just celebrating a friends win’ why has she apologised?
There seemed to be an element of nastiness in it.

RedLipstickHighHeels · 14/12/2019 18:56

It wasn’t a friends win,it was a political gain
And no she shouldn’t have apologised
