Nicola Sturgeon and Jo Swinson.....

I quite like Nicola Sturgeon, and I'm not keen on Jo Swinson. But Nicola S's rejoicing over Swinson's defeat - AIBU to find it unpleasant and embarrassingly over-the-top?

It was a natural reaction to a big, very close, unexpected win. A celebration of a young candidates win in an important seat held by another parties leader. Of all the things to worry about over this campaign and election this is a non event.

SteelRiver · 15/12/2019 01:03

The look on her face during that 'performance' spoke volumes and just confirmed what I'd thought about her since moving to Scotland. They don't get called the Scottish Nasty Party for no reason.

Darkbendis · 15/12/2019 01:19

JKScot4, Travis1, I will be in Glasgow on the 11th too. See you there! Smile

JKScot4 · 15/12/2019 01:19

@steel
You’re laughable, do men get criticised for celebrating? Go clutch your pearls somewhere else, you’re the nasty one.

LagunaBubbles · 15/12/2019 02:12

Two no marks doesn't really matter what either did

Gosh I wonder why I want independence for my country when someone thinks the First Minister is a "no mark"Hmm

HirplesWithHaggis · 15/12/2019 02:33

RandomlyChosenName

just watched the results announcement - I thought the winning candidate was incredibly composed; I think camdidates know the result before the formal announcement?

They do- they call the candidates to gather and tell them the results to see if they accept them. If they don’t, they have a recount. The bit of the stage is just announcing the results to everyone else. I was disappointed when I attended a Count and found this out, although it’s obvious really - no one ever looks surprised on the stage!

Allegedly, Ms Swinson delayed arriving at the count, and when she did, she demanded a recount. When the recording officer said no, because the vote didn't meet required parameters, she threatened legal action and was ultimately removed by her husband. (Twitter gossip)

Gracious indeed.

Pixxie7 · 15/12/2019 02:58

If Jo Swinson hadn’t been such a self serving bitch who didn’t have a good word to say about anyone I would probably agree. But she deserves everything she gets.

Bananablueberry · 15/12/2019 03:45

It was completely spun by the media to pit women against each other and turn a positive into a negative. Sturgeon was celebrating a big win for her fellow party member! Why shouldn't she?

rockingchaircandle · 15/12/2019 04:36

Completely natural reaction from NS.

Very over the top reactions here, people are desperate to find something to moan about. Bonus points to whoever threw in Abbott's name too!

A lot more actual sickening and vile things to worry about over the last few days as previous posters have pointed out very eloquently.

Bluntness100 · 15/12/2019 06:25

That's not true is it. Because this was the only seat she reacted like that. She didn't do this over the top victory dance for any others. And she did apologise for it. So even she admitted it was wrong, so I'm not sure of th point of saying she wasn't.

And the media didn't pit women against women any more than they pitted men against men. The bottom line is both sturgeon and Abbott were both unpleasant when they saw Swinson loose her seat. You didn't see Corbyn, or Boris doing it.

Sturgeon apologised. Abbot did no such thing.

Clymene · 15/12/2019 07:18

You have seen the images of jubilant Boris haven't you? No different

crispysausagerolls · 15/12/2019 08:27

@Bluntness100

Dianne Abbott’s reaction was even worse IMO, because labour didn’t even take the seat! She was purely revelling in Swinson’s loss.

It’s bad, bad, bad. When I look at the Tory MP who took Blyth Valley - a truly historic and shocking moment - and how calm and respectful he was of his defeated opponent...makes me so angry that these women have been so disrespectful.

ohprettybaby · 15/12/2019 08:31

I don't like Nicola Sturgeon but didn't see anything wrong with her joy at Jo Swinson losing her seat to SNP. She was just celebrating her own party winning and not Swinson's defeat per se.

Diane Abbot, on the other hand, was being a bitch.

churchandstate · 15/12/2019 08:37

Nobody would have given this a moment’s thought if Sturgeon and Abbott had been men.

crispysausagerolls · 15/12/2019 08:41

@churchandstate

Did any of the men behave like this? Not that I saw.

churchandstate · 15/12/2019 08:47

crispysausagerolls

Did I say they did?

crispysausagerolls · 15/12/2019 08:49

@churchandstate

I just think it’s silly to play the sexism card when there’s no way of knowing in this instance if it’s true. Seems unfair speculation.

Butchyrestingface · 15/12/2019 08:50

Another day, another opportunity to bash Nicola Sturgeon. Can’t wait for the wee Jimmy Krankie ‘gags’ to start. 😴 😴 😴

ssd · 15/12/2019 09:08

IME women are the worst for bashing Nicola Sturgeon. I don't know why. Boris Johnson has behaved terribly, yet he's treated as an affable joker. Sturgeon is over the moon her fellow candidate won and she's vilified.
The double standards are a joke, and more often than not its from women.

Clawdy · 15/12/2019 09:17

Don't think anyone now sees Johnson as an "affable joker".

It’s not “unfair”. It’s what I think. Sexism is a hugely influential force in our culture. Are you suggesting otherwise?

Travis1 · 15/12/2019 09:25

@Butchyrestingface pretty sure I saw a comment along those lines on the first page here 🙄

@Darkbendis yes! 100k expected to attend apparently 💪🏼

Jo Swinson deserves to lose her seat. She has consistently let her constituency down and didn’t show up Until the last moment. Also think the cancel brexit policy was just absurd and didn’t help their overall case.

crispysausagerolls · 15/12/2019 09:28

@churchandstate

I am suggesting in this instance it’s not a factor. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Woman behaves badly. The defence for this shouldn’t be “BUT MEN!!!! MEN DO IT!!!”, backed up by zero evidence in this case. The answer should be “yeh, maybe she should have behaved with more decorum/respect”.

Not everything is a bloody battle of the sexes.

churchandstate · 15/12/2019 09:29

crispysausagerolls

My argument isn’t “men do it”; it’s “if a man did it, nobody would be wringing their hands about it”. You can disagree with that but please don’t put words in my mouth that I didn’t utter.

Paintedmaypole · 15/12/2019 09:31

I think the country is becoming a nastier place and we could all do with being kinder. I don't think a woman should be held to a higher standard than men though.
