AIBU to think Melania Trump is quite impressive, in a way?

It can't be easy being married to a man like Donald Trump, and it can't be easy being in the public eye so much, but Melania Trump seems to take it all in her stride.
She is always immaculate in her appearance, and always looks so poised and calm, that I can't help being a bit impressed by the way she handles her role.

I realise she's probably had work done, and maybe she's a slave to botox, but I think she is quite striking and beautiful. Just one thing though - I wish she'd stop wearing the stupidly high heels - all her shoes seems to have 6inch heels and sometimes she looks a bit unsteady, especially when negotiating steps.

I'm not keen on her husband, but AIBU to think MT is doing a good job of being First Lady?

She’s doing a passable job of almost covering up how insanely unhappy she is - can’t argue with that.
Is she a good First Lady? What’s she done? She’s no Michelle Obama is she?

MorganKitten · 04/12/2019 23:14

Former yacht girl.... she’s just doing the role she’s paid for

sniffsneeze · 04/12/2019 23:15

Be best - erm no!

Lexplorer · 04/12/2019 23:16

Impressive to me means something more than a rich woman spending a lot of time on her looks.

BudgieHammockBananaSmuggler · 04/12/2019 23:16

I mean if you think the role of First Lady is to look attractive and do nothing else of value she is certainly doing a good job. Not sure what scope that husband of hers gives her to do anything else.

blueshoes · 04/12/2019 23:18

I think Melania is out of her depth (as is her husband of course) and is in a living hell. But she does not whinge about it (unlike Megan) and performs the role as best she can.

I respect that.

NegroniOnIce · 04/12/2019 23:21

Of course - unlike Meghan she’s not the butt of every racist arsehole Daily Mail or Express columnist with a grudge against humanity. That probably helps.

JasonPollack · 04/12/2019 23:21

Mmm yeah. I was a big fan of Eva Braun too.

PermanentTemporary · 04/12/2019 23:23

The story of their first meeting is just sordid.

I have nothing personally against her - how could I - but I haven't really heard anything that makes me think she is a positive force.

It is easy to think that women like Melania Trump and Carrie Symons are trapped but they have to take some responsibility for having decided to be with such appalling men, surely? I'd rather believe they were adults who chose their partners, and I don't think better of them for it.

BudgieHammockBananaSmuggler · 04/12/2019 23:25

Grin at @JasonPollack

Tillygetsit · 04/12/2019 23:27

She's vile. Absolutely vile.

Defenbaker · 04/12/2019 23:27

@NegroniOnIce - how do you know she's "insanely unhappy"? She often has quite a fixed expression on her face, but I put that down to the botox.

For an ex model she's done okay, if you look at the lifestyle she has, but of course money's not everything. I wonder what their relationship is like, off camera. If she really is as unhappy as some people say, she's done well to tolerate being in the public eye under constant scrutiny, while holding herself together. It's true what PP said, she's no Michelle Obama, but she seemed to interact well with the girls at that London school today.

7salmonswimming · 04/12/2019 23:33

Take it all in her stride?? Are you mental?! She is just as fascist as he is! Where do you get the idea she’s unhappy being married to him, or doesn’t fully back his politics? You make out like she’s stuck with him with all this “it can’t be easy being married to Donald Trump”, like she’s not as happy as a pig in muck.

Your OP is every female Trump voter ever. Seriously.

They LOVE Ivanka. They have the vote. They will vote for her literally because she looks good, wears heels well, is “poised and calm”, looks “immaculate in her appearance” and is “strikingly beautiful”. Plus, she’s a “successful female entrepreneur” who’s also managed to produce some babies. For the female Republican base, that’s enough for them to vote Trump. They think there’s no greater embodiment of womanhood than Ivanka Trump.

Livpool · 04/12/2019 23:33

She is very beautiful - that's it though.

I would feel sorry for her but she chose to be in a relationship with an idiot/bully

Rombocious · 04/12/2019 23:39

You honestly wonder what their relationship is life off camera?

She DESPISES him. Did you not know he's had multiple affairs during and soon after being pregnant with his son? One with a pornstar? And when they came out the whole fucking world was talking about it? And that she was effectively forced to stand next to him and smile throughout the whole thing?

Defenbaker · 04/12/2019 23:39

@PermanentTemporary - I know nothing about their first meeting - care to share?

I don't see her as a heroine of any kind, but think she's doing well, all things considered. She seems to be very self contained - perhaps a defence mechanism to cope with all the flak she gets, due to her husband's behaviour?

I was prepared to be flamed when I started this thread, as I realise DT is not very popular, but I was a bit surprised to read the PP's remark "she's vile". What has she done to deserve such vitriol (apart from marry for money (allegedly), which is not the crime of the century)? Watching with interest to see what others think.

OP posts:
trumpstoupeefluffer · 04/12/2019 23:40

Sorry OP but you are massively deluded - what's to be impressed by an admittedly beautiful woman (with work - won't knock her for that - hell if I had her husband's money I would too, married to an absolute narcissist who is the laughing stock of the world? I would be teaching my female children not to aspire to anything she is - i.e marries a man purely for notoriety and money and no voice of her own.

Yeah, very impressive Confused

Defenbaker · 04/12/2019 23:54

@7salmonswimming - I don't know anything about her political views, but I guess she must have always been pretty right wing, to get involved with DT in the first place. She couldn't know that he'd actually end up as POTUS though - that's probably not what she thought she was signing up for.

I heard something about DT's infidelities, but surely that's not something to blame his wife for?

You mention Ivanka, but this thread isn't about her. BTW, I'm a Brit so I'm not sure why you have me painted as a staunch Republican voter. I was a big fan of Obama, and would have loved to see him stay in power for a third term, but many people said he was quite ineffective as a president. I don't know enough to judge, I just watch American politics at a distance.

OP posts:
Howlovely · 05/12/2019 00:03

YABU. What's the point of her?
She's a trophy and she knows it. Put up and shut up and look good is her daily brief. She can barely disguise what looks like absolute disgust for Trump in certain photos.
Mrs Merton's famous question comes to mind, 'So what first attracted you to millionaire Donald Trump?'

Rombocious · 05/12/2019 00:08

OP please reread my post. How could you possibly think I was blaming her for Trump's affairs??? I was explaining some of the more obvious reasons she HATES HIS GUTS.

She's probably not very right wing either and neither is he really. His ideology is no deeper then ME ME ME. These kind of marriages are basically a professional contract. She looks nice, doesn't badmouth him in public and gives him a child and he gives her money.

BathshebaAndGabriel · 05/12/2019 00:10

Is that you, Melania?
This is a safe space.

7salmonswimming · 05/12/2019 00:13

What importance or relevance does Melania Trump have outside world politics (other than to her friends and family)? None. She actively supports a fascist, sexist, racist, capitalist monster.

Ivanka Trump is being lined up by the party as the next Republican candidate (after Donald Trump). A President can only hold office for two terms. This country loves dynasties, especially Republican dynasties. It’s likely (not just possible) she will be President one day. Melania’s job is to prime the female Republican vote for Ivanka. Sarah Pailin was the rough cut.

Obsidian77 · 05/12/2019 00:16

She's an attractive woman who married a man who looks like her dad for money and clearly loathes her husband.
How is any of that impressive?

AgeLikeWine · 05/12/2019 00:32

I disagree. Melania is undoubtedly beautiful, but apart from marrying a very rich, much older man what has she ever done except look good?

Michelle Obama is a Harvard educated lawyer who, when she was First Lady, led numerous initiatives on education & nutrition for children. She was also an eloquent spokesperson for progressive causes. She is my idea of a good role model for young women.
