AIBU to think Melania Trump is quite impressive, in a way?

It can't be easy being married to a man like Donald Trump, and it can't be easy being in the public eye so much, but Melania Trump seems to take it all in her stride.
She is always immaculate in her appearance, and always looks so poised and calm, that I can't help being a bit impressed by the way she handles her role.

I realise she's probably had work done, and maybe she's a slave to botox, but I think she is quite striking and beautiful. Just one thing though - I wish she'd stop wearing the stupidly high heels - all her shoes seems to have 6inch heels and sometimes she looks a bit unsteady, especially when negotiating steps.

I'm not keen on her husband, but AIBU to think MT is doing a good job of being First Lady?

You might be right - women are held to higher standards than men. But she didn't deserve to win that election.
I felt for the US voters - only two candidates and they were both awful.

Itsjustmee · 05/12/2019 10:40

I like her
She reminds me of Stiflers mum in American Pie

HulksPurplePanties · 05/12/2019 10:42

I think it was a damning indictment of HC as a person, that the US public preferred Trump.

The public preferred Hilary. Unfortunately the Electoral College chose Trump.

RhinoskinhaveI · 05/12/2019 10:43

She's a robot isn't she?

bibliomania · 05/12/2019 10:46

She always looked zoned out to me - I wouldn't be surprised if she's doped up to the eyeballs on anti-depressants.

I feel a certain sense of compassion towards her. She's an ordinary woman who happened to have extraordinary looks - at some level, she must know how inadequate she is compared to Michelle Obama. Frankly, it looks like getting up and getting dressed and putting one foot in front of the other is an achievement for her - not meant in a sarky way, just to say that sometimes that's a struggle. Although I don't get a sense of struggle, more that she has surrendered to the situation.

Melania a feminist and Michelle not a feminist?

GTFOOH

damnthatanxiety · 05/12/2019 10:53

Melania was right there with Trump in attacking Obama in the birth-gate drama. She has lived a life of putting on a poised face in return for living a life of luxury. She appears hard and self serving. Achieved nothing. Contributes nothing. Spends literally what Meghan and Kate spend on clothes COMBINED. Her face is unrecognisable from her youth. So much filler that her eyes gave squinted up to the point that I'm amazed she can see. What is there to be in awe of?

JamesBlonde1 · 05/12/2019 10:55

Obviously I don't know her personally so can't comment on her as a person, but she looks bloody amazing. Spot on stylist.

derxa · 05/12/2019 10:56

Achieved nothing. Contributes nothing. Spends literally what Meghan and Kate spend on clothes COMBINED Luckily you're not paying for her but you may be paying for Meghan and Kate.

greenlavender · 05/12/2019 11:04

God no. I cannot admire anyone who married & then stayed with Trump. I may get banned if I say what I really think.

Aderyn19 · 05/12/2019 11:06

It's not a crime to spend lots of money on clothes. So long as I'm not paying for it, I don't care.

nolongersurprised · 05/12/2019 11:11

Trump seems to be deteriorating neurologically in a way that’s escalating now. He has an odd, dragging gait, is struggling even more with stairs and his word salad speech is becoming slurred and even more tangential. No matter what she thinks of him she will end up taking more responsibility for his wellbeing in the next few years. This would be a shame if she doesn’t truly love him.

RhinoskinhaveI · 05/12/2019 11:22

end up taking more responsibility for his well-being
She is hardly going to be a personal carer when he develops full-blown dementia is she, she can skip off into the sunset with a handsome young beau💏

JuneFromBethesda · 05/12/2019 11:32

This reminds me of a recent thread about how 'inspirational' Catherine Zeta Jones was for not 'looking her age'. But at least CZJ has done something other than 1) marry a wealthy man and 2) top up good genes with plastic surgery.

longwayoff · 05/12/2019 11:41

Impressive? Like Imelda Marcos, Eva Peron and co? No. Impressed by none of them, thanks. Although sticking with DT must take a lot out of you.

Instagrump · 05/12/2019 12:31

Many women sleep with men for money and if that's the life they choose then that's on them. She just happens to get more money than most. Her whole (well compensated) job is to stand beside Trump and look pretty. She's done nothing great. Michelle used her title to do good work. The only thing Melania has done is trot out a few plagiarised Michelle Obama speeches.

AnnieTotach · 05/12/2019 16:59

"Melania a feminist and Michelle not a feminist?

GTFOOH"

I'm not saying that SHE is a feminist. Of course not.

But there is something (unintentionally) feminist about the fact that Melania so obviously couldn't care less about supporting her (nasty) husband whereas Michelle Obama was the woman who gave up her entire career to support her husband. She was a great first lady but the whole role is quite the antithesis of feminist.

ThebishopofBanterbury · 05/12/2019 17:03

Wish I was as easily impressed as you op! She's awful.

Defenbaker · 05/12/2019 23:06

@PineappleDanish, you said "The problem is that this is exactly what so many people DO value. They look up to people like the Kardashians, people who have been on Love Island, YouTubers with zero talent but a pretty face."

I agree, there seem to be many people, especially teenagers, who aspire to be like those people. You may find this hard to believe looking at my OP, but I've never watched the Kardashians, or Love Island - that's not my idea of entertainment. Also, I'm genuinely puzzled about the modern trend of having hair extensions, whitened teeth/veneers, permatan and false nails - all of that seems such a waste of time and effort to me. So, I'm really not into the superficial fashion trends, yet for some reason, I find myself admiring the way MT presents herself, her style and the way she copes with the position she's in. She is just very striking to me, and looks so enigmatic. I don't see her as a role model (unless someone is just looking for style/grooming tips!), but I like her style and envy her beauty. Mind you, I don't envy her being married to DT, he seems very controlling and is probably very difficult to live with.

I hated that "I don't care" jacket. I guess it was a dig at all the people talking behind her back, making snide digs, but it really was a bad choice to wear when visiting those poor children.

I don't see her as a feminist, nor an intellectual, but as a PP put it, she has a certain something that makes her stand out from the crowd.

No. She comes across as aloof and wooden. And there’s little to admire in someone who seems so miserable, but chooses to stay married when arguably she could walk away

MatildeHidalgo · 05/12/2019 23:19

YABU
I wish Macron had brought Brigitte to London with him. Now she really is fabulous.
