AIBU to think Melania Trump is quite impressive, in a way?

It can't be easy being married to a man like Donald Trump, and it can't be easy being in the public eye so much, but Melania Trump seems to take it all in her stride.
She is always immaculate in her appearance, and always looks so poised and calm, that I can't help being a bit impressed by the way she handles her role.

I realise she's probably had work done, and maybe she's a slave to botox, but I think she is quite striking and beautiful. Just one thing though - I wish she'd stop wearing the stupidly high heels - all her shoes seems to have 6inch heels and sometimes she looks a bit unsteady, especially when negotiating steps.

I'm not keen on her husband, but AIBU to think MT is doing a good job of being First Lady?

Barack Obama was only 'divisive' in the sense that many Americans couldn't wrap their heads around the fact that a black man was now being addressed as 'Mr. President'.

The American people voted twice for a black man to be addressed as ‘Mr President’. He let the people who needed him the most down horribly. He was incapable of building consensus. His foreign policy was disastrous. Many of the people who voted for Obama went on to vote for Trump. It’s amazing how they went from a malignant narcissist to “just” a narcissist, but maybe that’s a step in the right direction.

PositiveVibez · 05/12/2019 05:21

I like her too OP, Ive heard her deliver a couple of speeches and she comes off as very compassionate and gentle actually

Oh yes, like the one she practically copied word for word from Michelle Obama!

Oh and let's not forget the 'I don't care. Do U? Jacket she sported when there was discussions in the press regarding keeping kids in detention centres away from there parents.

Yes. She's a wonderful woman 🙄

I cannot have any respect for any woman who would marry that absolute disgusting excise for a human being.

I think Michelle Obama is amazing BUT she did adopt a very traditional first lady role of supporting her husband. Nothing wrong with that but she gave up her own career to do that.

The only thing I have a grudging admiration of Melania Trump is that ironically she has become more of a feminist role model in that she has made it plainly clear that she doesn't give a shiny shit about the role of the first lady and supporting her husband. Yes, ocassionally she'll come out and do something but, otherwise, you hardly see her and she's clearly busy doing her own stuff, whatever that may be (OK, probably going for lunch and shopping so not quite as worthy as Michelle but nonetheless she's doing what she wants).

Rombocious · 05/12/2019 06:25

@ithoughtsoo if were to summarise both presidencies I would say Obama dug the country out of the worst recession of our times and Trump has squanded the proceeds on a big tax cut that went mostly to the rich

mathanxiety · 05/12/2019 06:33

Building consensus is like hand clapping. It takes two.

A party that lost two successive presidential elections refused to participate in consensus building and instead midwifed the birth of a race to the bottom faction that deliberately appeals to the poorly educated for its votes.

This is a huge pity.

I agree with you 100% that Obama's foreign policy was disastrous. Hilary Clinton was utterly wrong for the job of Sec of State, and the effect of the regime changing and geopolitical games they indulged in has been horrific.

But the Tea Party are/were a bunch of confederate flag loving racists, and the GOP tolerated them within its ranks until like all good parasites they consumed their host.

derxa · 05/12/2019 06:38

I like her.

LakieLady · 05/12/2019 06:42

I always think she looks as though she's been mildly sedated or something.

She's very beautiful and always looks immaculate, but then I'd be well groomed and well dressed if I had access to the sort of money she does.

I feel sorry for her, married to that cunt.

DarrellMakepeace · 05/12/2019 07:31

Melania a feminist role model? WTF?

Shopping, having lunches and being emotionally distant from your dickhead of a husband does not a feminist make I'm afraid.

PineappleDanish · 05/12/2019 07:34

Kind of depends what you want from a first Lady, doesn't it?

If you want someone who looks good, says nothing and just stands there in a designer frock then she's doing nothing wrong.

If I were an American I'd much rather have a bright, dynamic woman who has her own ideas about things and uses her position to make a difference, like Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton or even Betty Ford.

HulksPurplePanties · 05/12/2019 07:38

If all you value is looks, I suppose she's impressive. Personally I'd prefer a first lady with brains and ambition, rather than a pretty face.

PineappleDanish · 05/12/2019 07:44

If all you value is looks, I suppose she's impressive.

The problem is that this is exactly what so many people DO value. They look up to people like the Kardashians, people who have been on Love Island, YouTubers with zero talent but a pretty face.

So depressing.

HulksPurplePanties · 05/12/2019 07:45

So depressing.

Agree 100%.

Tellmetruth4 · 05/12/2019 07:54

Trump is benefitting from the fact Obama dug America out of a massive hole. The economy is climbing because of the Obama administration. The next president will probably see a downturn caused by this Trump administration.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 05/12/2019 07:56

She’s traded her looks for money and is married to a vile man who disrespects all women. I’ve no sympathy for her and no admiration either. I don’t care how groomed you are, if you stand by the side of Trump, you’re the same as him.

Butchyrestingface · 05/12/2019 07:56

It is easy to think that women like Melania Trump and Carrie Symons are trapped but they have to take some responsibility for having decided to be with such appalling men, surely?

And yet when anyone makes the most mild comment along these lines on MN about women who marry the most glaringly appalling cunts and then proceed to have child after child with them, they get called victim blamers and so on.

As for old Melania, can’t believe anyone had the neck to start such a vacuous thread. 🙄

derxa · 05/12/2019 10:06

If you want someone who looks good, says nothing and just stands there in a designer frock then she's doing nothing wrong. Exactly like Jackie Kennedy whose husband was unfaithful on an industrial scale.
Melania is married to Donald Trump and has a child with him. That's it.
We don't know anything about their relationship. Or her.

Whattodoabout · 05/12/2019 10:10

She didn’t marry Trump for his good looks or impossible charm did she? It’s obvious why she did it and to me, she’s just a standard wealthy woman who spends a lot of cash on Botox and designer clothing. I don’t actually know what she has done as First Lady, she doesn’t quite have the intellect or charisma of Michelle Obama or even Hillary Clinton.

derxa · 05/12/2019 10:17

she doesn’t quite have the intellect or charisma of Michelle Obama or even Hillary Clinton. She doesn't need to be anything. She wasn't voted for.

AnnieTotach · 05/12/2019 10:21

"Melania a feminist role model? WTF?

Shopping, having lunches and being emotionally distant from your dickhead of a husband does not a feminist make I'm afraid."

Why not if that's what she wants to do? The point is that she hasn't let this official gendered role define her. She seems to have continued with her admittedly rather shallow life even though she is officially the first lady and hasn't given up what she wants to do to support her husband. Michelle Obama was Princeton grad, Harvard law school, a high flyer who gave it all up to support her husband. I admire her and understand why she did it but it's quite anti-feminist. On the other hand, Melania has just basically said 'Fuck it, I don't want this'. Sometimes feminism comes from surprising quarters!

nitgel · 05/12/2019 10:23

I quite enjoyed watching her make christmas decorations on the news yesterday

Aderyn19 · 05/12/2019 10:25

I would imagine that DT can be incredibly charming when he sets his mind to it. You don't get to be where he is, without having charisma.
I think she's stuck between a rock and a hard place - it would be difficult to leave now, if that's what she wanted to do. I also think she knows that no one likes or respects her, do she has effectively opted out of the first lady role. She didn't really sign up to it, so I don't blame her for pleasing herself.
I lost a bit of respect for Michelle Obama when she made bitchy remarks about MT giving her a gift when they moved out of the White House - I thought that was beneath her tbh.

Aderyn19 · 05/12/2019 10:28

I wouldn't say that Hillary Clinton has charisma - I find her pretty repugnant. I think it was a damning indictment of HC as a person, that the US public preferred Trump.

stairway · 05/12/2019 10:28

She’s discreet I think that’s her best asset.

AnnieTotach · 05/12/2019 10:31

"I think it was a damning indictment of HC as a person,"

She had a lot of flaws and wasn't the strongest candidate but i have no doubt that if she were a man, she would have been elected
