John Lewis 2019 Christmas advert- hit or miss?

It's just been released and I think they've caught the mood just right after last year's odd collaboration with Elton. Cute, not ostentatious, Christmassy and a subtle intro to Waitrose.

AIBU to think it's a hit?

I'm not feeling it. Asda's is winning for me so far

Honeyroar · 15/11/2019 10:33

The ad is cute, but yet again they've had someone cover a great song and ruin it. What can't they use Xmas music?

I'm a bit baffled how Xmas adverts become a thing, like the Coca-Cola trucks did.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 15/11/2019 10:42

I don't like it at all. Everything catching fire stresses me out and I wonder if kids will try to copy it. I get that it's meant to be find what you're good at but setting fires is just too dangerous to ever be acceptable...

IncrediblySadToo · 15/11/2019 10:43

It’s kind of cute, but it’s not giving me the warm fuzzies. Plus a Christmas pudding isn’t going to stop him causing chaos us it

I’m not sure any advert will ever be better (to ne) than the JL2012 snowman love 💕

But I liked JK last year AND the one much bashed - Sainsbury’s 2016

QueenofmyPrinces · 15/11/2019 10:55

Everyone keeps mentioning the snowman advert and so I think I’m going to have to go and search for it on YouTube because I have no idea what it is and I want to join in with the love Grin

OlderthenYoungerNow · 15/11/2019 11:01

Surprised how many people didn't like last years JL advert! I thought it was brilliantly done.

This one is OK. Better than the man in the moon one which was hella dull. I liked the bear and the hare too.

lilsquish · 15/11/2019 11:11

I like it.

my favourite is still their snowman one from a few years ago though

QueenofmyPrinces · 15/11/2019 11:15

Just watched the Snowman one on YouTube and was completely unmoved by it.

I can’t get emotive about adverts that are outside the realms of reality.

BercowsPoliticalPumpkin · 15/11/2019 13:22

I love it! Really made me laugh. The little girl looks like my dd when younger and my ds is obsessed with dragons. I love the traditional village and olde worlde feel.

BercowsPoliticalPumpkin · 15/11/2019 13:30

I've just been on the website now and searched for the dragon items. I just had to get ds the pjs 🙈 No such thing as too many pjs right?

Honeyroar · 15/11/2019 13:36

@olderthenyoungernow I liked last year's ad more. It was original music at least, and still had the cute story. Just wasn't a made up character.

Loveislandaddict · 15/11/2019 16:40

Just wTched Snowman. Didn’t do a lot for me either.

Also watched The Long Wait. That was sweet ( although I immediately wanted to know when and how the boy purchased a large present without his parents knowing).

TheDogsMother · 15/11/2019 16:50

I love it. It brought a tear to my eye.

PickAChew · 15/11/2019 16:58

Apparently it's leaving children distraught!

Raspberrytruffle · 15/11/2019 17:01

Its adorable but I feel it's not got that wow factor that the il adverts usually have.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 15/11/2019 17:08

Well, I've got a teenage middle aged crush on Dan from Bastille so I have to like it Wink

However, they've used a hell of a lot of auto-tune on it.

It's a cute enough advert, but as a child of the 70's it's giving me flashbacks of puff the magic dragon which I can't bear.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 15/11/2019 17:24

I'm absolutely missing the point of it and think it's a load of tripe. Does JL expect an Emmy for it, or something? It's really poorly tuned and thought-up drivel.

The Barclays credit card fraud adverts have more charm.

Bah humbug!

But then again, the Argos advert makes me smile.

tillytoodles1 · 15/11/2019 17:28

Wait until it's bigger and sets fire to your house and eats the cat, the rescue will be full of them after Christmas!

QueenofmyPrinces · 15/11/2019 17:34

It’s really poorly tuned and thought-up drivel.

Well said.

When people say the advert makes them cry I can only assume they are tears of disappointment because it’s just so shit Grin

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 15/11/2019 17:37

I've read the thread now and am glad not to be quite alone with the dry-eyes-raised-eyebrow-stifled-yawn thing.

I just think of JL going 'Ker-ccchhinggg!' and having a race to be last with The Advert to make a 'grand entrance'. Yummy mummyness is an aspiration for some and that's their target market.

I had a look at the toy dragon. He looks nothing like the one in the advert. I still have my Elliot from Pete's Dragon from the 70s and he's waaaayy cuter! Grin

Tvstar · 15/11/2019 18:52

Apparently it's leaving children distraught!
I know she's ginger and looks a bit like Mrs shrek, but that's a bit extreme!! 🤣

DonkeyHotty · 15/11/2019 18:54

I think it’s cute but the song is a pile o shite.

paperbeatsrock · 15/11/2019 19:00

I watched it on the laptop last night and DH looked over my shoulder and said, ‘ Why are Waitrose using Greta Thunberg in their ad?’ I am not going to be able to forget that now.

ClownsandCowboys · 15/11/2019 19:05

I love it and will be buying an Edgar for my dd. She has ASD and I love that fact that to start with they try and change Edgar so he fits in. But then they accept him and use his special and different skills. Proper inclusion!

MrsGrindah · 15/11/2019 19:31

God there some real Grinches on here! It’s just a bit of fun people! You know..Christmas, fun etc! So what if some of us enjoy a soppy advert? We are not stupid ..we know it’s blatant marketing..maybe we just enjoy a bit of sentimental stuff now and then. FWIW I loved it.
