It's just been released and I think they've caught the mood just right after last year's odd collaboration with Elton. Cute, not ostentatious, Christmassy and a subtle intro to Waitrose.

AIBU to think it's a hit?

Not bad at all - nothing will ever beat "Mog" for me, but this was a fair try

While we're here, please can I ask if anyone can track down an old Yellow Pages Christmas ad for me? It was a beauty where the family TV had packed up and dad flicked sadly through the book knowing everywhere was closed. Except he then whacked the TV with the big book to get it going, followed by a relieved family and the "good old Yellow Pages" tagline

I've honestly not imagined this, but am darned if I can find it again ...

@EerieSilence thank you SO much; you're an absolute genius and you've made my day!! Grin Flowers

Still can't believe you found it, though, and so quickly - I've been looking for that for ages ...

Courtney555 · 14/11/2019 12:57

Bear and Hare was really moving, the song was lovely, and in the spirit of Christmas and IMHO yet to be beaten. I liked the Snowman/Woman one, and the monster under the bed too. I find this year's a bit average and didn't evoke any emotional response in any of us, and I'm pregnant and weep at everything. The little dragon is cute but that's about as far as it goes.

EerieSilence · 14/11/2019 13:02

@Puzzledandpissedoff - you're welcome. My family use me as google as I seem to be good at searching for things. Enjoy and glad I made you happy today :)

Sainos and Argos are the same company now. Wonder if it’s the same team who did them both because quite different!

soupforbrains · 14/11/2019 13:11

I love it think they're back on track after last year's Extravagant Elton Error

It didn't quite tug as much at my heartstrings as one or two of their past efforts but still good.

My personal ranking of JL Christmas adverts since 2011 (when they got good) is;

  1. Elton (rubbish)2018

6== Buster the Boxer(2016) & Man on the Moon (2015
4== Moz the Monster (2017) & The Bear and the Hare (2013

  1. The Long Journey (2012)
  2. The Long Wait (2011)
  3. Monty the Penguin (2014)

I don't see the problem with there being merchandise tie-ins. You don't have to buy them if you don't want to.

UOkhun77 · 14/11/2019 13:16

I thought it was gorgeous! Have loved all the JL ones in recent years except the Elton John one.

soupforbrains · 14/11/2019 13:21

I've watched the Sainsburys one, It's ok but not great

The Argos one, it definitely 'MEH' but the thing is it is so close to being great. IF at the end they had cut it back to being the Dad and Daughter in their kitchen with Wooden spoons and the table/pots and pans imagining and having a great time together then it would have been great.

The Aldi carrot one which has been on a couple of weeks already is absolutely doing my head in though.

notso · 14/11/2019 13:31

Not a fan at all it's been done to death in children's books.
My worst is the Aldi carrot though. It was annoying enough the first year.

Drivemecrazy1974 · 14/11/2019 13:47

It's OK but I wish they would just use the original version of the song instead of some new version. it really annoys me that they continuously do this. I'd much prefer to hear the original...

Ohffs66 · 14/11/2019 14:25

I love it, it made me cry. It's his little face when he offers up the Christmas pudding, he's so happy to get something right 💕

Inliverpool1 · 14/11/2019 14:33

Love it 😍

Patroclus · 14/11/2019 15:38

Good grief, JL could name a fluffy shoplifting turd Darren and people would still endlessly infom us how much it made them cry. When did it become an out gushing competition?

StarlingsInSummer · 14/11/2019 15:45

Miss for me, totally unmoved. I prefered last years. Or the one with the little boy waiting to give a present to his parents. The one that still makes me cry every time in the Bear and the Hare - but I think that's because that one was released the first Christmas after my brother died and it really made me think of him every time I saw it that year (and still does).

YourOpinionIsNoted · 14/11/2019 15:46

The Argos ad is great, made me tear up and laugh out loud (crowdsurfing teddy bear).

YourOpinionIsNoted · 14/11/2019 15:51

Not sure I get the JL one. Is the present she gives him the Xmas pud?

StarlingsInSummer · 14/11/2019 15:52

It seems that the gift was the pudding - something he is actually allowed to set fire to. Long term, I think some sort of fire inhibitor would have been more useful.

I'm actually glad it wasn't! I'm not sure it would send a great message - "change yourself/conform to fit in"... the take-away I've got from it is, "find a good outlet for your abilities".

Just watched the Elton John advert and it made me cry! Think it's because I have a little boy - I took it that he was singing to his mum.

YourOpinionIsNoted · 14/11/2019 15:58

The first time I watched it I thought she was going to stick dough in his nostrils 😂

malificent7 · 14/11/2019 16:00

Hit!

BustedDreams · 14/11/2019 16:06

Adorable 😍

HelenaDove · 14/11/2019 16:20

Love it

pantsville · 14/11/2019 16:45

Quite. I find all these Christmas adverts very contrived and annoying and the crying contest afterwards is questionable.

MelanieFrontage · 14/11/2019 17:18

I love it, my favourite since Buster the Boxer.
