John Lewis 2019 Christmas advert- hit or miss?

It's just been released and I think they've caught the mood just right after last year's odd collaboration with Elton. Cute, not ostentatious, Christmassy and a subtle intro to Waitrose.

AIBU to think it's a hit?

I thought the JL ad was a bit underwhelming, it may grow on me though. The best ones by far are the man on the moon and the one from 2011 when the little boy is counting down the days until Christmas, because he's so excited to give his parents their parents. Sob. The CGI ones just leave me a bit cold.

The Argos one was great. But I can't be the only one who thought the Sainsburys ad was bizarre.

TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 14/11/2019 10:06

HIT!!

(I may have welled up slightly …)

inwood · 14/11/2019 10:07

I love it!

EerieSilence · 14/11/2019 10:07

I really loved it. Couldn't care less about last year's ad, mainly because I couldn't care less about Elton John. This ad is a winner. Can't wait to show it to my DD, we usually cuddle up on the sofa, have biscuits and some paper tissues ready and watch the Christmas ads.
The Aldi one is really great too.

Squeakybubbles26 · 14/11/2019 10:08

I think it's great :) one of the best they've done in a couple of years ☺️

Willyoujustbequiet · 14/11/2019 10:08

Loved it

PinkSpring · 14/11/2019 10:09

Soft toy and book - ORDERED!

WaterSheep · 14/11/2019 10:10

QueenofmyPrinces We'll be in the minority together. Grin I'm also confused about people crying. Pregnancy hormones aside, I would love to know why people sobbed over it. Blush

namechangetheworld · 14/11/2019 10:11

The child is not natural - even the way she has been told to knock on the door looks fake.
I'm glad you said it first. She's a very cute little girl but her reactions are a bit OTT. Must be hard trying to react to a tennis ball on a stick though (or whatever they use these days for CGI).

cravingmilkshake · 14/11/2019 10:12

I love it!!

Madcats · 14/11/2019 10:14

The dog on a trampoline is hard to beat. The Elton John one didn't do it for me (and heralded a string of famous singer/band tribute movies), though it was lovely to see that Mr John Lewis of Twitter fame was sent some concert tickets (amongst other goodies) for his troubles.

Am I the only person who thought it was a bit Shrek-like. An unpopular green creature goes to sulk and a charming girl with long ginger hair, grows to love him....and it all ends happily ever after?

I am gutted that DD is far too old to even contemplate wearing the little dragon wellies that John Lewis are selling!

BigSandyBalls2015 · 14/11/2019 10:14

Don’t like the version of the song

Wallabyone · 14/11/2019 10:19

I watched it very quickly this morning-didn't think much of it, and I didn't get what the gift was?! Help!🙈

CrapeDiem · 14/11/2019 10:20

The gift was a Christmas pudding from, presumably, Waitrose!

HIT! plus side gorgeous red headed little girl ( I have one too Smile)
Has anyone seen the Boots one? what a total car crash...it's like a trailer to a horror film

Stabbitha · 14/11/2019 10:24

The one where the boy was excited to give his gifts was the best one.

Also, I think it was for a phone, but the one in 2013 where the guy cleans himself up after working on a rig or something so he can facetime his family. I had to leave the room evertime that one came on. Sob fest.

Excited101 · 14/11/2019 10:25

I liked it, the dragon is super cute! But it’s not got quite the same element of storyline that the older ones used to have. The Sainsbury’s one is lovely!!

InglouriousBasterd · 14/11/2019 10:25

Oh that’s lovely! Hit for me

Hollachica · 14/11/2019 10:26

Loved it brilliant!

PurpleTreeFrog · 14/11/2019 10:27

I thought it was pants and didn't really get the 'message' of it? It's okay to be incredibly destructive as long as you can set fire to a Christmas pudding? Wouldn't a match suffice? The dragon was also kind of creepy looking IMHO. Humbug!

legoiseverywhere · 14/11/2019 10:28

I like it, the dragon is cute. The singing vocal is awful though & a bit distracting.

FairNotFair · 14/11/2019 10:32

I can't be the only one who thought the Sainsburys ad was bizarre

You're not. I am bemused

SomethingAboutNothing · 14/11/2019 10:33

I liked it, the dragon was cute. It reminded me of the book Zog by Julia Donaldson.

PennyNotSoWise · 14/11/2019 10:36

@Louloubelle78
I love it as the dragon reminds me of my son. He has some very special qualities as an autistic child with ADHD. I'll be showing him this this evening. Those qualities are seen as undesirable to many but when channeled correctly he brings his individual value to others.

That's a beautiful post Loulou. I hope your son enjoys it :)

I really like this years compared to the Elton one last year. That one was really deflating after the big build up with all the theme music changes on ITV. It fell quite flat for me.

This one feels more right, and in the same spirit as the others that did so well.

Lipz · 14/11/2019 10:36

What I took from it is that when the dragon gets excited he blows flames from his mouth. He would ruin fun times for others and didn't have many friends because of it. So while she was baking bread she got a brain wave that bread needs flames so she came up with the idea of a pudding, something that needs flames and it would mean the dragon could Join in, in the fun and use his flames wisely.

My favourite ad of all time is sainsbury's 2014 the soilder one. Jim and otto. Great message about peace and sharing.
