To be angry at mil for going through my bags

So basically we've stored 4 suitcases at the inlaws while we are in process of moving.

She rings today to tell me she's gone through our suitcases while she's moving them into the garage. I mean I know they're looking after our belongings for a month but to go through them...

Who the hell does that?!

My MIL does things like that then asks questions about the contents!

TyneTeas · 10/11/2019 12:31

YANBU!

Did she give any reason?

phoenixrosehere · 10/11/2019 12:32

Yanbu.

That’s pretty rude. Unless, something was leaking out of it there is no reason going through someone’s things without their permission. Heck, even then I’d call the person and let them know and ask what they would like me to do. Did she say why?

ClemDanFango · 10/11/2019 12:32

YANBU Why did she go through them? Can you store them somewhere else?

pooopypants · 10/11/2019 12:33

Did you ask why she'd been through them?

YADNBU

summersherewishiwasnt · 10/11/2019 12:34

Why did she look inside ?

GrumpyHoonMain · 10/11/2019 12:35

I would look through bags too before putting them into a potentially leaky, spider infested garage just in case you had anything valuable in there. You sound really ungrateful

AmmarettoSours · 10/11/2019 12:35

Yanbu I would take another suitcase round for "safe keeping" and fill it with dildos and anal beads. Grin

Antigon · 10/11/2019 12:36

YANBU. I would get them back promoting. Sends a strong message that this is unacceptable.

Antigon · 10/11/2019 12:36

*pronto not promoting

MulticolourMophead · 10/11/2019 12:36

Why did she go through them? You just don't go through someone else's bags.

TyneTeas · 10/11/2019 12:37

If she needed to move them Grumpy, she could have called and enquired if there was anything inside the bags that the garage would be problematic rather than searching through herself

OldEvilOwl · 10/11/2019 12:37

What was in them? And what did you say when she told you she had been through them?

gamerchick · 10/11/2019 12:37

She rang you to tell you?

ThanosSavedMe · 10/11/2019 12:38

What did she say when you asked her why she went through them.

If you didn’t ask why, why didn’t you ask why?

MoreOfADogPerson · 10/11/2019 12:38

@GrumpyHoonMain - really? You wouldn't contact the person to let them know you were going to move them to the garage and ask them if that might cause any damage?

nuggles · 10/11/2019 12:39

She said she was trying to condense them down into 3.

Although you would have thought anyone with common sense would call first before going through belongings that aren't theirs?

Husband is off to pick them up as he's livid

Erm NO! You'd ask if they were ok to go in the shed or garage or should they be kept indoors!

GenuineQuestions · 10/11/2019 12:40

Be careful op, when Mil has delved into our belongings in the past she's chucked stuff out

YouJustDoYou · 10/11/2019 12:40

Mine does. She feels.she has a right to know our finances.

Antigon · 10/11/2019 12:41

What was in them?

Irrelevant surely.

ToniHargis · 10/11/2019 12:41

It's very difficult to know what to say in the moment, when something as rude and shocking comes up. If it is mentioned again, (and you should try to bring it into the conversation) ask her why she needed to go through your belongings. When (if) she gives you an answer, again it might be hard to say something, but you could always just raise an eyebrow and shake your head a little.
Problem here is the power dynamic.. She's expecting you not to say anything so she'll continue to do things like this. Once you change that dance, by pushing back, she'll get a bit of a shock, but she will also back off.

GrumpyHoonMain · 10/11/2019 12:41

There is a lot of hysteria on this thread. OP stored full bags at her mil’s. Mil wanted to move them into the garage and so checked through them. If OP didn’t want her to do that she should have put locks on them. This whole thread is ridiculous

nuggles · 10/11/2019 12:43

When DH asked why she went through our bags without asking us she had no answer.

It was mainly just clothes and a few personal things

No, she shouldn't have to.
