AIBU to think this is just fucking insane? Is this how it is going to be from now on? As the parent of a rape victim I feel beyond angry. Is no place safe for women now?

They’re not just accepting of male bodied volunteers; they’re specifically requesting them?? Shock Are you sure?

Throckmorton · 26/08/2019 20:44

That is bloody messed up

HeadintheiClouds · 26/08/2019 20:45

It’s not a condition of funding, by any chance? Hmm. Nothing surprises me these days, sadly

MummyLikesCrisps · 26/08/2019 20:46

Link or it didn't happen! Hmm

Holidaysmoliday · 26/08/2019 20:47

Can you clarify what you mean pls OP?

OtraCosaMariposa · 26/08/2019 20:48

But this is the natural consequence of "trans women are women". And self identification. You say you're a woman, you're a woman. Whatever your body.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 26/08/2019 20:48

All I can find is their Equal Opportunities monitoring form which offers three boxes to tick for "Gender" - "Female", "Trans male to female" and "Prefer not to answer"here

Aberhonddu · 26/08/2019 20:50

I'd be writing a letter/ email to them explaining that self id is not legal in this country and I'd also be explaining that they have not complied with the GRA 2010.
I know enough to know that this is not compliant with the GRA 2010 but I don't know enough to give you the relevant information.
In the unlikely event that this is real, then post in Feminist Chat, you'll have a load of verification about why this is not legal.

Just trying to get a link

Well, I found this page on their website. The "Process of becoming a volunteer" form says they are looking for women, and the equal opportunities form has tick boxes for female, trans male to female and prefer not to say (no box for male), so I'm guessing that they are at the minimum not applying sex-based limitations on who they accept as a volunteer: www.devonrapecrisis.org.uk/support-us/get-involved

Cheeserton · 26/08/2019 20:51

Sorry, you need to explain this more precisely. It's not clear exactly what you're raging against.

Throckmorton · 26/08/2019 20:53

I would assume the OP is annoyed that males are being employed to support women who have been raped, who I think we can safely presume would prefer to speak to females

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 26/08/2019 20:53

They say they are looking for women but their "person specification" listing the essential requirements does not list being a biological female as one of those requirements.

Throckmorton · 26/08/2019 20:54

for "are being employed", I mean either are being accepted as volunteers, or are being sought as volunteers

YouSayPotatoesISayVodka · 26/08/2019 20:55

Having googled the organisation, their support to victims includes those who are trans. So it stands to reason they have jobs open to those who are trans.

As a rape victim myself I have absolutely no issue with an organisation like this offering support to those who are trans, male victims and any others.

myrtleWilson · 26/08/2019 20:56

Responses to the tweet pointing out issues with this approach have not (yet) been acknowledged/answered

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 26/08/2019 20:57

Transgender people who have been raped use these centres too though, should they not have people there who understand their needs too?

As it stands there is very little support for trans people, and this shit happens to them too? Or are they just supposed to get on with things and not access help?

TRAs are slowly stopping any kind if specialised help for transgender people, it's not the fault of the majority of them who just want to live their lives and access services that will never be made available for their particular circumstances.

Spingtrolls · 26/08/2019 20:58

Could it be that they are getting an increase in calls from the trans community?

Cheeserton · 26/08/2019 20:58

Are transgender females never rape victims then?

GCAcademic · 26/08/2019 20:59

No response to this comment on the Twitter feed:

You guys really helped me a few years ago. My handle is my real name - I’m sure someone there will remember me and the work we did together in Torquay. My rapist now identifies as a woman and would fucking love this job. He’s still in Devon so it would be a perfect fit

TheFatberg · 26/08/2019 20:59

I think they mean cis and trans women from that post, not that they're specifically asking for trans women.
