Size 16 with a really horrible overhang/ apron belly. I have lovely bikini tops from Bravissimo but usually wear them under a tankini but it gets so hot on holidays! Would you??

No

YANBU-wear what you like and enjoy sunshine and water. It is a basic joy of existence! Anyone who wants you to cover up because you don't look a certain why is a disgrace to the human species.

escapade1234 · 15/07/2019 15:58

I don’t care what anyone wears around a pool so long as the basics are kept covered up.

I’m always surprised that the consensus is that bikinis are more flattering than one-pieces though.

I don’t agree with that at all.

Disclaimer: nobody needs to wear flattering clothes if they don’t want to. So as you please, no business of mine. But if you think a big tummy looks better hanging out of a bikini than stuffed into a one-piece, you’re deluded.

Benjispruce · 15/07/2019 16:13

Wear what you like. I saw a lovely set on a large lady in Spain. She worse a swim skirt with really pretty bikini top. The skirt was asymmetric with a little frill. Only if you're self conscious. Just think of all those beer bellies proudly displayed by the male variety. Nobody judges them!

Swimsuit 365

Benjispruce · 15/07/2019 16:15

swimwear 365 rather

Benjispruce · 15/07/2019 16:16

I am a size 12 in swimwear but have no interest in tanning. I think I'll get a swim dress next as they are so pretty.

Hadalifeonce · 15/07/2019 16:22

Recently came back from holiday, there were several larger ladies in bikinis, go for it.
A few years ago, in a resort with lots of extremely large Russian men & women, they were very happy to wander about in budgie smugglers and thong bikinis, if you want to wear a bikini do, it always feels a bit nicer when my tummy is a bit tanned.

MrsTWH · 15/07/2019 16:22

So glad you went for it OP!

I’m a size 16 and have a c-section apron. I’ve decided I don’t give a shit and I’ve bought a bikini for this Summer. Nobody has to look if they don’t want to!

MrsTWH · 15/07/2019 16:30

Having said that, acquaintances of mine went on holiday last Summer and posted pictures of other women around the pool onto their Facebook, with nasty captions like, “thought I looked rough but look at this state of this whale!”

I absolutely called them out on it and defriended them but it honestly is so disgusting and does put people off wearing what they want.

GibbonLover · 15/07/2019 16:55

YANBU to wear a bikini at any size
YABU to call size 16 'plus size'. Isn't it the national average?

Please don't fall into the trap of thinking 'Oh, there will be someone else bigger than me on the beach'. Yes, there certainly will but using other people's imperfections to make yourself feel better isn't a nice habit really.

Confident people always look better when half-dressed, whatever their size. That's because they stand up straight and look the world in the eye. Everybody looks better when they are standing correctly (back straight, shoulders back, looking straight ahead - Google it).

Pinktinker · 15/07/2019 16:57

Two piece is more practical than a one piece for trips to the loo but I always wear a tankini personally. No reflection on anyone else, I’d probably just think ‘good for her’ if I saw someone else with my body wearing a bikini. I’m not hugely overweight or anything but definitely have a Mum body...

BeyondDangerousTshirts · 15/07/2019 17:01

Glad you took the plunge OP! ☀️

I'm an 18 and only ever wear I bikini. Hell, I even go topless!
My logic is, if you're fat, your size is no different fully covered so why bother worrying :)

haverhill · 15/07/2019 17:02

Just returned from Ibiza as a very pale, size 14/16, and there were literally all body types on the beach, mostly in teeny bikinis. No one gave a stuff.

AliasGrape · 15/07/2019 17:18

I’ve been a 10/12 and I’ve been an 18/20 and am somewhere in between these days, and for so long I cowered in ‘shapewear’’ one pieces with assorted cover ups and a general feeling of embarrassment till a few years ago when I just thought fuck it I’ll wear a bikini if I fancy it. In swimwear situations I find I’m too busy reading/swimming/enjoying myself to give a stuff what anyone else looks like and I assume nobody is going to give a stuff what I look like either, not like I’m auditioning for Love Island or anything. If people are petty/ mean spirited enough to judge and think unkind things about me then best of luck to them, hope they enjoy feeling better than someone else and it improves their holiday - doesn’t affect me either way.

Shame it took me so long to realise all that though, wish I could have been similarly unconcerned as a teenager/younger woman, what a waste.

teaandbiscuits89 · 15/07/2019 17:19

Can I just say that @Kenworthington and @JaretsGirlfren look amazing!

More beautiful confident women in bikini pics please!

44PumpLane · 15/07/2019 17:20

OP, just go for it.

You don't need anyone else's permission, you don't need anyone else's acceptance.

I highly recommend Jameela Jamil's "i_weigh" Instagram account showcasing that bodys come in all shapes and sizes and we shoiod get on with being fabulous no matter what!

Shockers · 15/07/2019 17:22

I love watching folk enjoying themselves on the beach. It matters not what they’re wearing!

Benjispruce · 15/07/2019 17:25

Watching one of those ads for simply be or similar recent, my DH said "Wow those women are so much more sexy than that friends actress" we had been watching Friends and realising how thin the Monica character was. It's so good to see larger women on TV!

Benjispruce · 15/07/2019 17:28

Not that it's about men thinking you look sexy but it was refreshing to hear .

BookwormMe2 · 15/07/2019 17:59

This is such an inspiring thread and well done OP for getting your bikini on! I haven't worn one since before my DC was born a decade ago after losing confidence in how I looked and thinking I could only wear one if I lost weight. This year, aged 47 and still a curvy 16, I'm damn well wearing one when I go on holiday in a fortnight and I can't wait!
