To ask brexiteers to explain to me why they want us to leave the EU?

ethelfleda · 27/05/2019 09:00

I have a totally open mind here. I did vote remain but I genuinely want to know why people think that leaving the EU is a good thing?
I’m not being goady - I actually want people to convince me that Brexit is a good thing so I don’t feel so terrified of what’s to come!
So what is it about the EU that’s bad for us? What will we achieve by leaving?

I’m absolutely with you. I’ve asked but never had a logical, accurate or persuasive reason given.

hellodarkness · 27/05/2019 09:06

I've asked lots. They usually start by saying 'I'm not racist but...' before saying something vague about EU control, masters of our own destiny, make Britain great again. Never had a proper answer.

GreyGardens88 · 27/05/2019 09:07

Because they believe everything they read in The Sun and the Daily Mail

ethelfleda · 27/05/2019 09:07

Seeing as it appears we are leaving the EU anyway, I really want someone to explain to me why they think it is a good thing!

I know I don’t own the forum (!) but I’d rather this didn’t turn in to a goady thread! Genuinely want to hear Brexiteers opinions here rather than dismiss them as racist etc

You won’t hear anything as remainers will
come in with the insults. They’ve started already...

QueenoftheBiscuitTin · 27/05/2019 09:13

These threads have popped up constantly over the 3 years since the referendum. All you're going to get are reasons why remainers think people voted leave.

TheWernethWife · 27/05/2019 09:13

I was talking to a guy who voted Leave, he has a son who studied in France years ago and now has a grandaughter heading for uni. Where is her chance of Erasmus now.

Rock4please · 27/05/2019 09:13

Because originally they were promised the moon on a stick and also the leave vote was a general protest vote by certain sections in poorer areas of the country. Now they are angry because they feel that their vote was not respected and that democracy has been/will be undermined if we don't leave. At least that's what I believe.

SpanishTiles · 27/05/2019 09:16

^You won’t hear anything as remainers will

Confused

What does mean though? Are you a leaver? Why couldn't you use this post to tell us your views instead of merely stating leavers can't explain if a remainer has insulted them?

MaMaMaMySharona · 27/05/2019 09:19

I too genuinely want to hear from leave voters and understand how it will be good for the country - I don’t want to poke holes in their argument or start a fight, I just want reassurance from someone that if we leave there are positives.

Todaythiscouldbe · 27/05/2019 09:23

I voted leave, I've explained my reasons IRL and had since very informed discussions. However, I won't put my reasons on here or enter into discussions and you'll find the majority of leave voters won't. These threads always descend into arguments with remain voters piling in to call leave voters thick and racist - I'm neither of these.

sheshootssheimplores · 27/05/2019 09:25

I don’t think this is the place where you’ll find lots of Leave voters. You might be better asking on a different forum. Posters I Mumsnet tend to be very left leaning.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 27/05/2019 09:27

Posters I Mumsnet tend to be very left leaning.

There are some very left leaning leave supporters. Corbyn et al for example

timeforakinderworld · 27/05/2019 09:28

Honestly? These threads never end well. Someone will say something vague about wanting sovreignty or a fair deal for citizens outside the EU or better deals for fishermen. When actually questioned on the details, the arguments fall apart and they go off in a huff about being attacked. The truth is that the country is not better off economically out of the EU and a lot of people are now pretending that they always knew that but they want to leave anyway. Just because.

ArabellaDoreenFig · 27/05/2019 09:30

Plenty of leave voters who are left leaning sheshootssheimplores

Virtually no experts believe there will be positives. Your only chance is to decide that you no longer believe in experts and convince yourself that if you survived the Blitz (and at this stage it really doesn't matter if you survived it by not being alive at the time...) then everything is going to be alright.

Marriedwithchildren5 · 27/05/2019 09:32

Because people were scared of open borders, the freedom of movement of people from other countries became more obvious the bigger the EU became. The bigger the EU became the more people questioned how safe it was having so many open borders across the world. People didn't feel safe so they voted to leave.

They didnt see the doctors, nurses, companies where freedom of movement has helped our country and businesses. I do believe a second referendom is needed.

Conks · 27/05/2019 09:34

No, I’m a remainer but even I’m getting sick of it. It’s embarrassing

hellodarkness · 27/05/2019 09:36

"Genuinely want to hear Brexiteers opinions here rather than dismiss them as racist etc"

Fair enough, and I apologise for my earlier comment. I'm watching with interest but so far it's going how you'd expect isn't it.

AnnaComnena · 27/05/2019 09:38

This. In the past I've explained my reasons in detail, more than once. They had nothing to do with immigration. (I was using different names then, so searching for my posts won't help you.)

But I won't do it any more. I'm sick and tired of being called a thick, uneducated (which I'm not), racist, xenophobic Little Englander who shouldn't be allowed to vote because I'm too old.

So well done, Remainers. You've killed discussion of a major issue on a major forum. Are you pleased?

Pa1oma · 27/05/2019 09:39

Surely one person could just tell us one positive reason to Leave? How hard can it be. State your reasons and then don’t engage any more if you fear the insults will start coming?

Lizzie48 · 27/05/2019 09:40

One thing I’m sure of; England and Scotland are totally polarised on this issue. Scotland is very pro remain, and there will have to be an independence referendum at some point. Brexiteers are eventually going to find that they can’t have it both ways; they can’t both leave the EU and keep the United Kingdom intact.

Add to that that there isn’t a solution to the issue of Northern Ireland’s border with the ROI. Brexiteers don’t want the backstop, but haven’t come up with an alternative solution that doesn’t break the GFA. Because there isn’t one!

Sorry, this won’t reassure you, it’s not intended to.

constantlyseekinghappiness · 27/05/2019 09:40

What @conks said.

This question has been asked before many times and the thread only results in remain voters, desperately holding onto their high horses, insulting leave voters and attacking them.

Unfortunately this forum is not the place leave voters to voice their opinion.

It just becomes a ‘why remain is best and I’m smarter than you and you’re thick and racist’ thread.

So they won’t. Leave voters simply won’t participate. Not here anyway.

IsabellaLinton · 27/05/2019 09:42

I had several reasons, one of them that I think the EU is on an ever-more federalist path and I don’t like the idea of an EU army. The idea was that we were to be guided, slowly, to the idea of superstate without suspecting what was happening.
