To worry about the pollution caused by football fans.

I know nothing about football but...

There are two football finals with teams from the uk. Liverpool vs Tottenham and Man U vs Arsenal (I think). They are being played in Madrid and Baku, so thats approx 50,000 extra people travelling from the UK, by air.

I get that the locations where agreed in advance but AIBU to be annoyed that we are all trying to be environmentally friendly with reusable bottles and wooden sodding toothbrushes and those with power have no regard for anything other than money!

Your knowledge of football is appalling!
Arsenal are playing Chelsea!
Not many fans have tickets for either of the European matches so it would not worry me unduly, thats if they can afford the cost of flights.

TooLateToDrinkCoffee · 10/05/2019 21:38

YANBU. You are spot on with your concerns. At least thanks to Greta Thunburg and Extinction Rebellion politicians are starting to make moves in the right direction. I just wish they were a bit quicker.

TooTrueToBeGood · 10/05/2019 21:41

What's so special about the pollution football fans produce? Is it somehow different from the pollution people going on holiday produce? Seriously, stop scratching at your arse to find contrived things to get outraged about.

Chloemol · 10/05/2019 21:42

So what about all the hundreds of thousands flying abroad on Holiday each year, going to stop that as well?

Sparklingbrook · 10/05/2019 21:43

Yes, why pick on football?

RSAcre · 10/05/2019 21:43

But presumably, as you do not mention them at all, you are comfortable with non-football fans "travelling from the UK, by air" ?

What is it specifically about football fans that makes their pollution worse than, say holidaymakers or business people's pollution?

StoorieHoose · 10/05/2019 21:44

What about all those business trips that are completely unnecessary with modern technology?

NotACleverName · 10/05/2019 21:45

What's so special about the pollution football fans produce?

Everyone knows English fans going to cup finals abroad produce 48.7% more pollution than people going on their holidays. It's just Scienceâ„¢, okay?

I know nothing about football but...

I can tell.

Redshoeblueshoe · 10/05/2019 21:45

My DH will be so pleased about Man U
I can hardly wait to see his reaction Grin

IncrediblySadToo · 10/05/2019 21:47

🙄

Many other sports, business, holidays, arts... people travelling.

Singling out football fans is utterly ridiculous

Irishnames · 10/05/2019 21:49

So are they putting on extra planes for the matches then? Or will there be the exact same number of planes flying that were scheduled to? 🤔

AnnaComnena · 10/05/2019 21:49

politicians are starting to make moves in the right direction.

How are politicians supposed to
a) decide where football finals are played
b) determine which teams reach the finals
c) prevent fans from travelling?

The number of people flying on short haul and long haul holidays each year has a much greater environmental impact. How about politicians tell people they mustn't go to Disney World? Or just ban cheap flights?

Up the Mighty Reds!!! YNWA

Morgan12 · 10/05/2019 21:53

They will put on more planes yep.
But I don't see the issue with this specific type of traveller. Not when there are people going on holidays and business trips every single day. Pointless to be enraged about the football being abroad really.

NotMyPuppy · 10/05/2019 21:55

You’re being ridiculous about the flying but I do tire of seeing 40,000 plastic flags being waved about by fans before games.

Hatemadeupwords · 10/05/2019 21:58

Schmichael, Parker, Pallister, Irwin, Bruce, Sharpe and Ince, Hughes, Mclaire, Keane and Cantona, Robson, Kanchelski and Giggs, c'mon you reds 😂

Hatemadeupwords · 10/05/2019 21:59

BTW flights were already chartered. At least they will be full.

Hermagsjesty · 10/05/2019 22:00

YABU to pick out football fans in particular - I don’t see how it’s any different to people flying to Germany for the Xmas markets or Paris for a romantic weekend or Ibiza for the club nights or whatever else... Given how much it’ll cost to go, I imagine this will take the place of a holiday abroad for many of the fans travelling.

Still18atheart · 10/05/2019 22:00

Yabu how I see it is when the stadiums we’re organised they didn’t know who would be in the final. For all they knew it would be Barcelona vs Real Madrid. And Baku fc vs ? . As you can see my football knowledge isn’t great either but they have to play the final somewhere.

YaBentBastard · 10/05/2019 22:04

Allez Allez Allez

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot · 10/05/2019 22:07

Countries bid a couple of years in advance.

Any country eligible to compete can bid.

Pretty similar to all international sporting events.
Maybe they shouid all be banned? Or at least spectators barred?

I think I'd rather ban hen/stag parties abroad

AnnaComnena · 10/05/2019 22:14

I think I'd rather ban hen/stag parties abroad

Ban destination weddings, too.

starzig · 10/05/2019 22:14

Is it all sport you would like to ban? Or just football.
People fly all round the world for all types of sport all year.

TBH. I drive 3 times that distance a year just for work (as do millions of others)
Why not pick on the daily commute.
