To worry about the pollution caused by football fans.

I know nothing about football but...

There are two football finals with teams from the uk. Liverpool vs Tottenham and Man U vs Arsenal (I think). They are being played in Madrid and Baku, so thats approx 50,000 extra people travelling from the UK, by air.

I get that the locations where agreed in advance but AIBU to be annoyed that we are all trying to be environmentally friendly with reusable bottles and wooden sodding toothbrushes and those with power have no regard for anything other than money!

I've just looked it up and it's possible to get there by train. Takes 4.5 days from London, via Paris, Frankfurt, Vienna and Kiev, if you don't stop off anywhere en route. One for Michael Portillo, perhaps.”

What a fantastic trip that would be, all of those wonderful cities and ending in a fascinating looking place. With research could probably find a different route home too. Well that’s next summer’s idea sorted (or maybe autumn to see the Vienna woods). Thanks Anna!

I think OP has a valid point, but it's not just about football.

It would never happen now, but imagine the impact of such radical action as all the UK supporters refusing to fly to see the two matches. If this results in an empty stadium - all the better, as the message would be clearer and louder.

Same for anything else, really. Hen and stag parties included.

I don't buy the argument that this is a drop in the pollution ocean. Every drop matters and can be compounded by people following example.

The only way you can stop fans travelling is to stop having the European competitions altogether. This is never going to happen. Also as has already been pointed out well over 50%of the tickets do not go to supporters of the clubs involved anyway. If it was just the fans of the 2 clubs going then no doubt Wembley would be a viable alternative. I do think there could be a stronger point of the super cup being changed from Istanbul as I think the clubs may get a larger ticket share for that one.

Even if it did happen it would NOT result in any where near an empty stadium. Liverpool and tottenham ve for breakfast."

Liverpool and Tottenham fans will share 33,226 tickets for the Madrid final, which takes place in a stadium with 68,000 seats.thats only 48.86% between both clubs.
In the case of the europa league final
Arsenal and Chelsea fans willshare 12,000 of 68,700 seats in Baku. Thats 17.47% with that small a percentage it wouldnt be sending a loud and clear message in gact it wohkd be doubtful if it was even noticed that the two set of fans were there at all

Your right the issue isn't just about football and thats what people postimg have been trying to say. Air travel happens regardless of these two finals. The issue is air travel.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 11/05/2019 21:26

Eh no idea where the for breakfast came from i'm not suggesting any one tries having either the liverpool or tottenham squads for breakfast, or lunch or dinner for that matter, they might be slightly grissly all that musle especially arounf the thighs
