I know nothing about football but...

There are two football finals with teams from the uk. Liverpool vs Tottenham and Man U vs Arsenal (I think). They are being played in Madrid and Baku, so thats approx 50,000 extra people travelling from the UK, by air.

I get that the locations where agreed in advance but AIBU to be annoyed that we are all trying to be environmentally friendly with reusable bottles and wooden sodding toothbrushes and those with power have no regard for anything other than money!

I opened this thread thinking it would be a methane beery farts complaint.

AuntieStella · 10/05/2019 23:46

I think she meant that 56k ticket holders wouid be travelling to the final, irrespective of the nationalities of the teams playing.

And there wouid be 12k in the teams' contingent. There really isn't much difference between their environmental cost and that if they were coming from say Spain and France.

You really can't pull an event that's been two years in the planning, just weeks before the event, because the finalists are from one of the further-away countries in Europe from the agreed host.

There is a separate question about the expectation that fans will travel. Because it hasn't always been that way. It used to be rare treat - maybe once in a life-time (and certainly ticket holders only). do we need to put the genie back in the bottle?

tttigress · 10/05/2019 23:49

I would rather see Stag and Hen do's abroad being banned....but that's got nothing to do with the environment!!

ForKatt · 10/05/2019 23:49

For the all-London final flights alone to and from Baku are around £1000 per person.
That's an awful lot of tax that someone in the aviation industry is going to be paying.

Supporter is going to have to be making a comfortable amount of money and paying a good amount of tax in order to find at short notice £1000 for a flight, plus ticket, plus accommodation, plus meals etc.

Do you own a car OP?

StateofIndependance · 10/05/2019 23:52

The reality is that fans travelling to these matches make up a tiny percentage of total air passengers for the year. It's really not worth worrying about. People travel for hobbies all the time - golf, bird watching, surfing. This is another hobby.

Purplehammer · 10/05/2019 23:58

Millions in the word are hungry.
Climate change.
Brexit.
And these fuckers are going thousands of miles for a football match?
Totally irresponsible.
Plus the felt has blown off of my shed roof.

BadLad · 11/05/2019 00:01

Ban destination weddings, too.

Poor Maui.

But we need to stop thinking like this. Everything matters.

Talk about pissing on your own parade ( if that is the correct saying ) .
4 teams from the English Premier league get into the 2 European finals ..and people are still complaining and moaning !

As a pp said ..those fligjts were already scheduled to go .. ( just now they are dearer!)
Doubt if Italy/Spain /Germany ( please adf more ..i am not a football fan ) would be doing this chat.
For once ..cant we be proud that Engllish teams and football have gone down in history for the right reasons ?

(Reckon F1 produce more juck than those schedulef flights )

bizzey · 11/05/2019 00:09

Hum juck =yuck obvs !

DontVisitMe · 11/05/2019 00:10

I'd rather they just completely banned football tbh. Vile sport.

FannyWork · 11/05/2019 00:13

What's so special about the pollution football fans produce?

Because they’re more likely to be working class & lots of middle class lefties mainly see climate change as something the poor need to make sacrifices to deal with while they carry on as normal. See: Emma Thompson.

nancy75 · 11/05/2019 00:13

Why is football a vile sport? It’s 2 teams kicking a ball about, calling it vile is a bit of a stretch

BadLad · 11/05/2019 00:15

A truly stupid post. Well done.

Kingslayer · 11/05/2019 00:19

Vile 😁 😁

bizzey · 11/05/2019 00:30

Vile !! What are you on about ?

Now cricket..i might have to agree with you there ( ! ! Joke ...light hearted )

bizzey · 11/05/2019 00:32

( Actually i am not ...apologies to cricket fans ...sorry )

bizzey · 11/05/2019 00:33

Cricket fans travel everywhere.
Hummm

Sparklingbrook · 11/05/2019 01:08

Lol at banning 'vile' football. Grin

justarandomtricycle · 11/05/2019 01:11

*The world would not end if both matches were played in Birmingham or Manchester

The world wouldn't end if both matches weren't played at all.*

The world wouldn't end if the matches were played in Antarctica in a giant canyon carved out of the ice and surrounded in a 50 foot oil-field wall of flame

ilovesooty · 11/05/2019 01:12

Vile sport

Didn't take long for MN resident football bashers to get going did it?

bizzey · 11/05/2019 01:14

There is only one person who can justifiably use that term ...
Her husband wants to to the final ...which happens to be her due date !
Then it is a vile sport !

bizzey · 11/05/2019 01:15

( Actually not sure if it is "wants" to go ...or "is going " )

BadLad · 11/05/2019 01:20

Cricket fans travel everywhere.

We sure do. For international matches, anyway. Don't think there are many club games against clubs from other countries.

I was lucky enough to get the chance to watch the 92 World Cup final. Sadly, England had an off day, but it was an amazing occasion.

BadLad · 11/05/2019 01:22

Then it is a vile sport !

That doesn't make the sport vile. Whatever that means.

It makes her husband a twat.
