To worry about the pollution caused by football fans.

I know nothing about football but...

There are two football finals with teams from the uk. Liverpool vs Tottenham and Man U vs Arsenal (I think). They are being played in Madrid and Baku, so thats approx 50,000 extra people travelling from the UK, by air.

I get that the locations where agreed in advance but AIBU to be annoyed that we are all trying to be environmentally friendly with reusable bottles and wooden sodding toothbrushes and those with power have no regard for anything other than money!

Wooden toothbrushes?

What?

I didn't get the memo! Shock

starzig · 10/05/2019 22:16

You'll also be happy to know the super cup will be in Istanbul too. (Winner of Europa v winner of champions league there 2 English teams again)

MzHz · 10/05/2019 22:19

Only 16k tickets are allocated to each side, the rest is for corporate/local...

Woulditbeworth · 10/05/2019 22:22

I wasn’t expecting such a strong reaction. I’m not outraged, or scratching my arse to find things to be annoyed about.

Obviously it’s no different from the pollution from holiday makers it’s just a shame that it can’t be more flexible so that we aren’t adding additional travellers.

I’ll get back in my box.

Why football fans?! Why not just the entire country of China or the USA?! They would surely be better places to point the finger at first for pollution?!

Woulditbeworth · 10/05/2019 22:29

I didn’t say anything about banning football! I really don’t mind it, house full of fans.

And I was being sarcastic about using wooden toothbrushes, although it is a thing.

It's only 6000 tickets for each club for the Europa final, which is a disgrace as the stadium holds just shy of 70k

Redshoeblueshoe · 10/05/2019 23:01

You could ask EUFA just to move both matches to Wembeley
Tickets split fairly between fans
And everyone will agree with you Grin

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 10/05/2019 23:05

So the teams and the fans have to travel thousands of miles to Baku/ Madrid when Wembley is just round the corner?

Fucking insane.

MyKingdomForACaramel · 10/05/2019 23:15

So if two European teams make the final of the World Cup if it’s held in, say, Japan- should the country sack it off and move it to Wembley? You’re behind ridiculous.

Samcro · 10/05/2019 23:17

I HATE football (cheers DB) but ffs. people travel all over the world, hoildays will be the biggist on ....so ban them

Sparklesocks · 10/05/2019 23:19

Yes flying isn’t great for the environment - but currently around 70% of global emissions are caused by just 100 companies - so a few extra thousand flights are a drop in the ocean compared to that. It’s the global corporations who are really affecting climate change.

Purpletigers · 10/05/2019 23:21

We should ration airmiles .

nancy75 · 10/05/2019 23:29

MyKingdomForACamel If the World Cup was in Japan the teams that reach the final would already be in Japan & so would most of their fans. In the case of Chelsea v Arsenal it does seem particularly daft for the teams & fans to travel to Baku when the 2 clubs are 8 miles away from each other & both within easy reach of Wembley.

MillieMoodle · 10/05/2019 23:31

YABU to think any extra pollution will be caused by football fans.

50% of the tickets for the Liverpool v Spurs game in Madrid will be corporate hospitality tickets. The football clubs have an allocation of 16k tickets each, out of a total capacity of 68k.

The Chelsea v Arsenal game in Baku will be played in a stadium that has a total capacity of 68k as well, yet each team only has a ticket allocation of 6k each. The remaining 56k tickets will be corporate hospitality.

I don't think you can really blame football fans for any extra pollution...

Buddytheelf85 · 10/05/2019 23:31

The obvious difference between football fans and holidaymakers is that this involves 50,000-odd people flying purely to witness a 90 minute event which will be broadcast on television anyway.

In 30 years’ time, I think our kids will look back on behaviour like this as ridiculously entitled environmental profligacy from our generation. That’s assuming our kids survive the inevitable catastrophic climate events we’re kindly cooking up for them.

Redshoeblueshoe · 10/05/2019 23:33

The world would not end if both matches were played in Birmingham or Manchester

Redshoeblueshoe · 10/05/2019 23:34

Buddy where on Earth do you think the fans are getting the tickets from ?

HazelBite · 10/05/2019 23:34

Come on you Spurs!

Not sure I understand your point - are you saying that people attending as a result of corporate hospitality don’t count as football fans? They’re still people who want to watch football irrespective of who pays for their ticket.

justarandomtricycle · 10/05/2019 23:36

Today I used my consumption of oil, coal, uranium and various precious metals to virtue signal to other people about how environmentally conscious I am.

Other people should give up their life's passion and stop having kids to save the environment, but me not piddling about on the internet would be an unthinkable sacrifice.

The world wouldn't end if both matches weren't played at all.

Redshoeblueshoe · 10/05/2019 23:39

Rottness it might Grin
