We allowed friends and family (a handful) to stay in our home for a few days at a time while we were away for a few months. I’ve returned to a number of things missing.

I want to avoid drip feeding but SIL agreed to let her family (14 people) stay in my home one weekend without my knowledge.

Since being home full details are emerging and I’m noticing more items missing in my home each day.

AIBU to have not considered that I was going to be taken for a fool?

I am sorry, OP.

I place great value on family but have learned that my dh knows his family far better than I do. Trust your dh.

(On the other hand, sometimes it's the spouse who is bad. And poor family relations is a red flag. But not this time )

Do let us know if she replaces the stuff (and reimburses mil for the bits she brought round)

KooMoo · 09/04/2019 08:33

Well done Livelaughlivetoday! Bloody well done!

pollymere · 09/04/2019 11:08

I do wonder whether SIL rented it out with copied key. Have you neighbours you could ask? I'm meaning as an AirBnB not just to family. Burglary is when someone comes in your home and steals stuff even if your front door is wide open. You didn't give them a key, but even if you had it would still be theft. Claiming on insurance does not rack up your premiums significantly so is worth considering, as is contacting the police.

Clutterbugsmum · 09/04/2019 12:05

pollymere

It doesn't matter if SIL has copied 10,000 door keys as has been said on here 10,000 many, many times OP HAS CHANGED THE LOCKS

I'm beginning to the CHANGED THE LOCK, is this years CASH THE CHEQUE.

DioneTheDiabolist · 09/04/2019 12:10

Oh you poor thing OP.Flowers

WombatStewForTea · 09/04/2019 12:42

@Clutterbugsmum
I read pollymeres message as suggesting thats how SIL accessed the property- through copied keys. They weren't suggesting OP needed to change the locks!

Clutterbugsmum · 09/04/2019 12:52

OP has already said that MIL gave SIL OP keys.

Cottonwood · 09/04/2019 13:04

Yes but I think Polly is suggesting that property may have been rented out multiple times previously by the ghastly SIL?

Cottonwood · 09/04/2019 13:05

Agree with Wombats interpretation

Horsemenoftheaclopalypse · 10/04/2019 12:47

I can’t wait to see what happens today...
but frankly I’d be amazed if the SIL surfaced with the stolen posessions...

CoraPirbright · 10/04/2019 18:22

Any news on your missing items OP?

Narnia72 · 11/04/2019 11:36

What happened yesterday @Livelaughlovetoday ? Hope your SIL returned with either goods or money.

justilou1 · 14/04/2019 02:16

Nothing to report back, OP? I’d love to know if SIL has been renting your house out.

CoraPirbright · 23/04/2019 20:23

Did anything ever happen regarding your other missing items OP?

skunkatanka · 23/04/2019 20:55

Unbelievable cf behaviour!
