Urgent advice re phones abroad needed. Suspicions re DH

DH flew to European city today with work. Not too unusual to happen but some things have got me thinking.

1. He bought new trainers, coat and had hair cut yesterday.
2. He text me to say not to tag him on FB as some people at work were saying this trip was a jolly. (I rarely post on FB and probably tag him about 2/3 times a year for holiday photos so this seemed really odd request).
3. I missed a call from him so rang back from my mobile. His number is saved without the international dialling numbers in my phone and it rang as normal..ie not the abroad ring tone I was expecting. Does this mean that he isn't on mainland Europe?

I said I woukd call back. Is there a way of doing this that means I could establish where he is? Hope that makes sense. TIA

2 could be a bit strange. 1 isn't strange unless it is strange for him! I suppose he has to get a hair cut sometimes and did he need new clothes?

Uk mobile phones ring in the normal way when you are overseas so 3 is not strange.

Are you normally this suspicious?

My phone won't put the call through without an international code if the phone is abroad. Sounds suspicious, sorry.

Which hotel is he in? You could call it and ask to speak to him? You don't need to actually wait for him to pick up the phone in the hotel room.

You don't need the international dial code if you are calling a UK no fro a UK no, even if the phone is overseas.

Any time I call Ireland saved number or not still get international dialing code

My ex and I have both been in Europe separately this month and haven't had an international dial tone when calling each other about DC. But the rest of it I would be suspicious of. If you both have an iPhone can you look on the find my phone app and see where his is?

I’ve never had it where it hasn’t had the abroad ring tone. My mum lives part of the year in Spain and my DP travels a lot for work... always gets that weird ”duuuurrrppp” style ring instead of ring ring.
Both numbers saved, all of us with different network providers.

When dh is abroad and I ring him I don't need to use an international dialling number and I don't see one when he rings me. However I always get an international dialling tone.

There are two stages to a call to a mobile phone abroad - the first stage is the connection to the UK network, then they pass it on to the foreign network.

I'm afraid this means you can't really draw any conclusions from the ringtone, as a UK ringing tone could just mean his phone is out of battery and thus it never actually answered.

That's not how it works. It's a UK phone number, it doesn't switch country codes just because you go to a different country. When my relative visits from another country, I dial an international number to call her even though she's in the UK.

And the ring tone is generated by the phone itself, so will be the same wherever he is.

Don't know the name of the hotel but will call without the international code from landline. I wasn't sure about the code thing but it was the combination of the 3 things which made me wonder...

Think the international dial tone might depend on your network - I definitely still get it when phoning dh abroad (most recently Austria and France).

Also, you definately won't need the country code to call him, since you're calling a UK number from within the UK.

Where the phone actually physically is, is irrelevant at the point at which you dial, so long as it was issued by the same country you are phoning from.

The ring tone definitely doesn't always change nowadays - I think it depends what network the phone in the European country has linked to.

The Facebook thing seems odd though.

Why don't you ask him the name of his hotel so you have it in case of an emergency?

2 is strange but 3 I wouldn't even notice probably.

What country is he supposed to be in? Maybe one of us can tell you something very specific for him to bring you back that he could only get there!

You should get the international ring tone.

Call the hotel.

Ring tone is a red herring so don’t dwell on that.
