Dogs in coffee shops?

Is this a thing now? I've previously seen dogs in clothes shops and today am in a coffee shop (which sells food) and two dogs have been welcomed with treats from behind the counter.
I own two dogs - but ew!

I love it.

It’s not like they’ve employed them to make the sandwiches!

(Currently don’t have a dog, I just like them being welcome in shops and cafes as they are in many other countries).

I've noticed dogs in shops where I don't think I'd have seen them previously. I don't like it at all.

Unless they're sat up on the table where you place your coffee cup or trying to get a sip of your latte YABU.

There are more coffee shops that don't allow dogs than do. If it bothers you go to one that doesn't, you have the majority choice.

I wouldn't like that at all. There are too many dog owners who have no understanding of the fact that not everyone likes dogs and that even those who do don't necessarily want them jumping around them and slobbering over them.

I know not all dog owners are like that, but anytime I go to the park and despite the notices stipulating that dogs must be kept on a lead, there are so many who allow their dogs to run around the place unhindered, annoying and even frightening strangers.

I have no doubt they'd be equally inconsiderate in coffee shops, allowing them to wander around the place, sniff at people's legs, bark their heads off and then taking umbrage if anyone objects.

If you don’t like dogs or want to be around them then don’t go to a coffee shop that allows dogs, the majority don’t.

I love seeing other people’s dogs there, mine are a disgrace so I won’t be taking them.

They are very experienced pub visitors though.

Live in a popular walking area, all shops allow dogs, it's the only way they sell anything. I like it though never take my dogs to town lots of walkers and campers do, rather they are in a lead with the owner than tied up outside by the door

I’d be okay with that as long as they can’t reach tables/worktops (like mine would) and dribble on them.
Where I live lots of people scream or cross the road at the plain sight of a dog.

I like coffee shops that welcome dogs. It means I can walk my dog and pop in for a cuppa. There are plenty that don’t allow dogs if that’s your preference.

Most coffee shops don't allow dogs, why don't you stick to those ones instead.

I theory this wouldn’t bother me but a lot of dog owners tend to be a bit twatish. Maybe we should welcome the dogs but ban the owners?

The tattoo studio I had all of ink done in has a resident dog plus my tattoo artist sometimes brings his dog too. I found it weird the first time, especially when the staffie bounded over and climbed up on me. It would understandably scare some people off but I suppose you can always choose to go elsewhere if dogs aren’t your thing.

There are too many parents who have no understanding of the fact that not everyone likes children and that even those who do don't necessarily want them jumping around them and making a mess on the tables - can we make all coffee shops child-free just to avoid the ones who don't have decent parents who ensure their offspring behave appropriately in public?

From my point of view it depends on a lot of things. What kind of coffee shop, is the food well away from the dogs, are the dogs well behaved etc. etc. Ultimately you have the agency to patronise or not patronise any establishment that suits your dog or no dog preference. The market will ultimately decide whether or not a dog or no dog establishment is the way forward for the owners. If enough agree with you, then the shop will have to change or die. If not, tough luck, you're outvoted.

If they just sit with their owner, are friendly if you approach them for a stroke and don't wee or poo in the establishment, I really don't see an issue.

Dogs are not the same as children.

If I'm on my own walking the dog I often look longingly at coffee shops in parks etc that we can't go in. Dog walkers are out every day unlike other more seasonal visitors so it makes sense to cash in on them. A hot drink at this time of year is nice!

Dog-popular country park near me added an outside counter to their coffee shop which is a good compromise I thought.

I don't mind sitting outside with the drink/food once I've bought it. So happy if they let dogs in to purchase but not to sit inside.

Yanbu. Nothing worse than the smell of dog when you are trying to enjoy food. And yes, all dogs smell. Or the noise when they start barking at another dog, which many of them do.

Good for you, go to somewhere that doesn't allow dogs if thats your preference. I am not particularly keen on moaning humans but unfortunately there isn't a lot I can do about that!

It wouldn't bother me as long as the dogs were well behaved. Just a heads up in case you weren't aware, Starbucks are all dog friendly so maybe avoid those if you don't want to see dogs in a coffee shop.

@OutPinked the tattoo studio where I had my tattoo done has two resident dogs too! A Pug and French Bulldog. They seem to stay behind the reception counter though and sit on the office chairs rather than roaming around the shop.
