Dogs in coffee shops?

Is this a thing now? I've previously seen dogs in clothes shops and today am in a coffee shop (which sells food) and two dogs have been welcomed with treats from behind the counter.
I own two dogs - but ew!

Not knocking them. Just asking dog owners to keep their pets under better control in cafes. Too glib for someone to assert that I should just go to another cafe.

BloodyDisgrace · 28/01/2019 10:48

Relax. They have been for ages welcome in much nobler places than coffee shops, i.e. pubs.

I have 2 dogs but they are quite big and one is not that well behaved (rescue with lots of problems) so me and DH only sit outside cafes or pubs.

We did used to take our previous dog into dog friendly places and we are more than happy to use dog friendly cafes now. I have never ever seen a dog that is not just lying quietly in one of them. I don't know where all these places are where dogs are wandering around, annoying people, stealing food etc.

I have however been in many many coffee shops where there were young children running around, screeching, banging into people and tables, getting under peoples' fee and generally being a nuisance and a potential danger.

I have never ever seen a café, coffee shop, restaurant, bank or shop that doesn't allow children. I would love to sit in a peaceful place and have a meal or a coffee and if there were dogs there it would be heaven. I would also just once like to go to a supermarket (I hate food shopping) and not have a child screaming so loudly it hurts my ears, running amok, playing football in the food aisles or using a scooter while their parent(s) takes absolutely no notice whatsoever

I love taking our dogs to pubs and cafes whilst we're out and about and we socialised and trained them from very young so they're generally really good. As others have said, once they've had a look around and maybe checked there are no stray chips under the table to eat they just lie down and sleep.

I get that some people don't want to share their space with dogs so it's good that there's still places with no dogs allowed. I've got friends who are very allergic and one who is phobic so they really need dog-free places.

I really notice if there's bowls of water, dog treats on the counter and if the staff make a fuss of the dogs because then you know they're really welcome and we'll make a point of going back.

I love dogs and kids but if I'm really honest, I'd choose a pub/cafe full of dogs over children every single day. I've had plenty of meals out spoiled by badly behaved children but never a dog and that's generally because dog owners are usually very conscious of making sure their dog doesn't disturb other people. Some parents, not so much.

The only shops I've noticed being dog friendly are places like garden centres and pet shops, I've never seen a non-working dog in a clothes shop. Does this happen?

I wouldn't take my dogs shopping, they'd be bored shitless!

You have two dogs but don’t think it’s rignt to have them in a coffee shop? Do your dogs not go in your kitchen then? Or sit in the front room with you whilst you have a cuppa and a biccy in front of the tv?

Coffee shops are cleaner than most peoples homes because they have to be - do you hoover, mop and sanitise your kitchen floors everyday? Probably not. Commercial premises have to be cleaned to a much higher spec so no I don’t see the issue really - I mean assuming the dog isn’t messing on the floor! And most people’s pets are housetrained so that isn’t going to happen all that often is it.
I can appreciate people who don’t have animals in their home are aren’t used to having them may find it a little strange but wouldn’t understand actual dog owners having an issue.

I think it is the sheer size of Mydogisthebest's pets that stops her taking them inside - not hygiene or manners.

My DD has a very well-behaved great dane, but we wouldn't take him into an establishment because there would be no room for anyone else. He does not fit easily under a table - we'd need at least three! A wag of the tail would clear a table, and if he wags against you, it's like being lashed with a bicycle chain!

Even visits to the vet see us waiting outside the door until it is our turn, because he fills the entire waiting room. When he was castrated the vet didn't have a big enough table and had to perform the operation on the floor, and he was only half the size he is now. Much as we would love to take him into places, we don't.

I thought Grumpos comment were to the OP?

My dogs were never allowed in my kitchen but only because they can reach the worktop without having to stand on their back legs and will grab anything left on them! I have recently moved though and to get into the back garden they have to go through the kitchen. Am going to have an extension built so they won't have to go through kitchen.

One of my dogs is very well behaved as we socialised him from a very young pup but we still probably would not go inside a coffee shop because he is pretty big. We would take him into somewhere like a pub though and he has been in garden centres, Pet shops etc.

The other dog is a rescue and was never socialised at all and is a bit of a nightmare

Sorry Mydog and Grumpo

I've obviously got hold of the wrong end of the stick (not the first time, I'm afraid). As you were.

What a lot of reflexive twaddle to say we should go elsewhere if we don’t like dogs in cafe spaces. Dogs were expected to be outside until recently and places I have frequented for years because they serve good coffee now allow dogs inside. I have had dogs with their noses in my shopping, up on banquettes trotting along to my plate while their owners are utterly blithe about it and I have been bitten on the hand by a wiemeranner in a local cafe and was aggressively told to f myself by the owner. Dogs carry gut parasites and some bite and that’s why I don’t want to eat with dogs.

What I love about Europe is their acceptance of dogs in more places. I think it's great, so long as good behaviour is actually enforced by owners and staff

lmusic87 · 25/07/2019 11:13

I don't like it, but in weather like this its fine

AlexaAmbidextra · 25/07/2019 11:28

Dogs are not the same as children.

True. They’re far nicer.
