Dogs in coffee shops?

fedupntired · 23/01/2019 10:45

Is this a thing now? I've previously seen dogs in clothes shops and today am in a coffee shop (which sells food) and two dogs have been welcomed with treats from behind the counter.
I own two dogs - but ew!

I don't mind it so much because as most people have said, you will generally find somewhere else that doesn't allow them.
I do have an issue with the fad that's started happening of having things like dog friendly screenings at cinemas.
Our local cinema does a night you can bring your dogs, DH is so severely allergic to dogs, it's really put us off going as I doubt they're thoroughly cleaning every single velvet seat and carpet the dog hair has stuck to.

It's vile. Hygiene practices are poor enough already. I also don't want to have my crotch sniffed/be jumped up on/slobbered over. Too many incompetent and entitled dog owners who are incapable of comprehending that not everyone wants their little precious slobbering on them. Sad that it's becoming the norm to take dogs to cafes, hotels, shops.

Purplecatshopaholic · 23/01/2019 12:30

Thats my point @FrancisCrawford. If you allow assistance dogs in - as you have to do legally - whats the hygiene issue with other dogs? Behavioral issues are of course unacceptable (although I personally I have never seen any when my dog and I have been out)

PUGaLUGS · 23/01/2019 12:31

Love to see dogs in coffee shops, but then I take take mine, she loves going in.

Rainbunny · 23/01/2019 12:36

I love it personally. I don't take my dog to coffee shops but we have a number of dog friendly pubs in my city and it's nice to see people and their dogs there. I've never seen any bad or negative behaviour or incident. Our dog is fairly small, he just sits next to us and chills. The only potential disturbance could be from people stopping by to pet him Grin

pigsDOfly · 23/01/2019 12:36

My dog and a dog friendly cinema night would not be a good mix. She's not keen on the dark and being in the dark, surrounded by other dogs and with the sound of a loud film coming through the speakers would probably be her idea of dog hell.

She'd be much happier at home asleep on the sofa.

PosiePerkinandPootle · 23/01/2019 12:38

It won't be long before the entitled dog owners whose fur babies can do wrong come along and spoil it for the majority who make sure their dogs are behaving. We had somewhere a couple of miles away that we'd walk to with our medium-sized dog. He'd lie under the table with a chew toy. We kept hold of his lead so he couldn't venture far. But too many people started bringing large breeds or more than one dog, feed treats so dogs were then looking for food from everyone, not keeping them on a short lead, ignoring requests to control their dogs so the cafe had no choice but to make a blanket ban.

geekone · 23/01/2019 12:48

@PosiePerkinandPootle the size of the dog is irrelevant if it is well behaved which my giant sized dog would be. Like yours with a chew and a short lead. To be fair he would probably sit there even if I didn’t hold the lead. We do need to make sure he is knackered first and we would never take him before a walk.

WFTisgoingoninmyhead · 23/01/2019 12:48

Do you lock your two dogs away when you have a cup of tea?? Why is it a problem being in the same room as a dog when you eat and drink, the dogs are not preparing the food.

Wordthe · 23/01/2019 12:51

I think there should be a size limit for dogs, you can take your dog in if it weighs less than 6 kilos and has a big bite strength of under x amount of pounds per whatever it is
or something like that

Wordthe · 23/01/2019 12:51

I wouldn't go in a cafe if the dogs were preparing the food... which cafe is that?

redyawn · 23/01/2019 12:53

I went to a ' dog cafe' in Bexhill. Not a fan myself. I'd rather eat my food without dogs trying to sniff my plate.

user1andonly · 23/01/2019 12:54

two dogs have been welcomed with treats from behind the counter

Do you mean the person behind the counter fed them from her hands and then carried on serving food?

I'd definitely be unhappy about that.

Otherwise I don't mind the place being dog friendly as it gives me options when my sister visits with her pooch and we want to go for a brew.

Wordthe · 23/01/2019 12:55

Of course a well behaved terrier is fine, who could not love a well behaved terrier?
But we are not in the 1950s, dog owners are no longer polite well mannered owners of well-behaved terriers
Today dog owners have flocks of dogs, unruly flocks of dogs with individual personalies that have to be respected
The dogs must all have their freedom to roam about and express their true natures
I don't want that in a cafe!

RangeRider · 23/01/2019 12:59

@RangeRider
Why do dog lovers come onto a parenting site to disparage children particularly when the thread is about dogs.
Such twateryhmm
Oh bless you. Has no-one told you that people can use this site without having children themselves, or that people can have well-behaved children AND dogs. It's not dog OR child you know.
I've nothing against well-behaved children, I detest badly-behaved ones who run around in shops screaming, making a mess and generally getting on everyone's nerves while their parents ignore them, and then leave the mess for the staff to clear up. Are you one of those parents by any chance?

Iwantacampervan · 23/01/2019 13:00

We have a small cafe near us which is very dog friendly - they get given chicken and biscuits! All the dogs know exactly where they are going and will not let you walk by without going in. There is a sign outside saying dog friendly and it is the other side of a main road to where most visitors to the area will go. If someone does not want a cafe with dogs there are 6 others within 5 minutes walk where dogs cannot go inside. Our dogs are well behaved but we always check when someone comes in if they are OK with where they are sitting.

Pissedoffdotcom · 23/01/2019 13:07

One of the reasons I miss living abroad. Growing up most places allowed dogs & it was ace - never had a problem with dogs slobbering everywhere, wandering around etc. Very social atmosphere where everyone accepted each other's right to be there.

I hope more places accept dogs here. We no longer have a dog but when we do adopt another I want to be able to stop for a coffee mid stroll.
And YES to the PP who mentioned that you are more likely to be approached by a sticky, snotty nosed toddler than you are a dog on a lead. I have kids, i love them dearly, but I fully accept that not everybody does & would be mortified if they wiped grubby hands on some stranger in a bid to say hello

user12678356 · 23/01/2019 13:13

Don't mind dogs In cafes or shops etc, but some people are too stupid to own a dog! They are often inconsiderate of others and lazy. These lot shouldn't be allowed to to own a dog let alone bring it shopping.

I have blacklisted a restaurant for this very reason despite being a dog lover. Stupid woman and her mate (regulars) who let their dogs wander around sniffing and licking people. The silly owner has a little play with them, straight back in the kitchen to dish the next food - doubt he washes his hands!

fleshmarketclose · 23/01/2019 13:16

I don't see anything wrong with it tbh there are plenty of places that refuse to allow dogs so if it's a problem go elsewhere. We have cat cafes around here, now I would never go in there because I'm scared of cats (and they charge admissionHmm) so would opt with my feet. I have taken ddog in pubs and cafes and no one would know she is there as she lies under the table quietly on the off chance I will give her a tidbit.

LimpidPools · 23/01/2019 13:18

I live in Germany. Dogs are allowed in almost all shops, restaurants and cafes here.

It's fantastic. I didn't really notice they were allowed in until we got a dog. It's very rare to see more than 1 or 2 dogs at a time in any given venue. They lie under tables and generally cause very little trouble.

I have sympathy for those people who have dog phobias or dog allergies. However dogs are pretty much unavoidable anyway and I'm sorry, but people with these issues are in the minority and places that do choose not to allow dogs will always exist.

I don't much care about people who just don't like dogs. Tough. I don't like shouted conversations, tinny music escaping from headphones, strong perfumes, bad table manners, crying or screaming children etc. etc.

But these are all part of life. Choices made by other people that I have no say over. I can choose to leave, but I don't get to ban anything.

Daytimetellysucks · 23/01/2019 13:18

I like it.

We recently lost our dog, but loved going out for a walk with him and being able to stop off in a coffee shop. He’d snooze under my chair

In our local town, the vast majority of places selling food do not allow dogs - plenty of places to choose from if you don’t want to encounter one

I live in a holiday area, people bring their dogs on holiday and want dog friendly places to visit while here. The places that allow dogs must think it’s good for business
